In this diagram we can see the reciprocal actions of the head, neck, and jaw muscles. Postural balancing is the result of a finely tuned proprioceptive feedback mechanism controlling the balancing of muscular forces in 3 planes. The net effect is that alterations of the bite can influence the muscular chain of the body and vice versa.Energetic /functional imbalance throughout the musculo-kinetic chain comprising the musculo-tendinous acupuncture meridians will impact on postural alignment of body structures and in turn the temporo-mandiblar system.

If the teeth are malposed, improperly repaired, replaced, or missing; the mandible will shift on closure with resultant compensations within the musculature of the head, neck, shoulder girdle, and beyond. The patterns of compensation within the neck will be determined by the faults within the bite. If the jaw is retruded, for example, the person may have a forward head posture. This will directly impact upon the musculo-tendinous meridians associated with the postural muscles affected most directly. Clinically we find the Bladder component of Tai-Yang and the Gall Bladder affected most frequently with tight tender points present at Bl-10 and Gb-20 in the sub-occipital region; and also Gb-21 and Tw-15.

As we bite, the forces generated are transmitted along the roots of the teeth and pass into the bones of the skull. When the jaw is aligned and the bite balanced, the forces directed into the skull are dissipated in a manner that supports healthy function of the cranial mechanism. Problems with the bite may cause distortion in the shape and movement of these bones.
