The Origins of psychosomatic diseases in a few Chinese Classics

We receive the theories of acupuncture and of Chinese medicine as a whole. But, at the beginning, it seems that they led sometimes independent lives, that their respective level of complexity and refinement followed different destinies through the movements of times.
The nascent mind of Chinese medical thinking, as witnessed by the first publications of which we have existing, though later, copies, shows the kind of orientation it displayed. The structures of the mental, emotional and spiritual fields, were examined and analysed. Their relations to the proper fimctioning of the body were observed, the influences they could exert on different functions and organs, and the modifications they could undergo through changes in these same functions and organs, were noted.Qi and Blood, Essence and Mind, were part of a configuration in which mutual control and mutual transformation were a kind of rule followed in the evolution of physiological or pathological responses to the environment and to the inner world of each human being. In this configuration some older concepts, originating from the past, like the Hun and the Po, played a sinificant role in the effort to place into categories the different facets of mind's nature. An attempt was also made to differentiate between the most important qualities of the thinking process as well as of the emotional behaviours. Finally, the rules of the Five Elements were used to manipulate these fields into similar categories.
The results of these efforts, as we will see from a few chapters of the Nei Jing, and briefly from later texts, show the diversity of tendencies, the originality of different minds, which however coincide in the basic principle according to which the dynamics of physiological and pathological organic and functional mechanisms are tightly connected with the intellectual operations and the emotional reactions. But they also demonstrate the awkwardness and the lack of subtleties of these first attempts. From the start, body and mind, body and emotions, mind and emotions, were treated as part of the human being's complexity, a testimony to what we call now psychosomatic relations.

According to Medline 4.019 articles on acupuncture were published between 1982 and 19%. They cover investigations in which control groups were used in only 236 cases, equal to 6%. Only 91 articles (6 per year) conform to scientific norms.
A few meta analyses show a modest effect of acupuncture compared with placebo, but they are not convincing. With claim rates of 97.8 or 98.6% in some articles and a placebo effect of 0.4% in others, scientific misconduct cannot always be discounted.
Other investigators have searched for the acupuncture points special morphology and the physiological aspects of the meridians. They have employed radioactive tracers and they have dissected bodies. The search has been utterly fruitless, and no new knowledge has been added.
Time has come for a change of concepts:
Acupuncture points and meridians may be regarded as useful as the similarly imaginary latitudes of the globe are, and they could serve well as guidelines for nomenclature and teaching purposes. Besides, experience shows that there are points on the human body that, treated by a needle, alone or in groups may relieve symptoms or cure illness. This experience can be transferred to others, but at the same time we should impress the need of further research. `Gate theory', viscero- cutaneous reflexes and a possible influence of neurotransmitters may account for some acupuncture action. We have yet to establish that so is the case.
In the remaining part of the speech, the author stresses heavily the need for application of proper scientific methods. The control groups are essential (which is exemplified), the randomisation must be correctly done, the blinding of the patient and of the investigator is difficult but necessary, and patient groups should be large enough for good statistical evaluation of the results. Finally, the publication should preferably be in an international, peer-reviewed English-languished journal.

A hypothesis is reported, that acupuncture effects are based on the physics of interactions of weak electromagnetic radiation in and with organic matter.
Experiments have shown, that radiation in the microwave range originates from the membranes of nerves and muscles in action. This radiation can be focused by dielectric lenses into blood vessels.
Blood is able to work as an antennae for wide range of photon energy. The radiation is absorbed by proteins and enzymes by resonance in different organs. The arguments and objections are discussed from quantum electrodynamic description.

The Internet offers exciting new opportunities for information exchange to all acupuncture professionals. In April of 1996, we began to develop , with the technical support of the Laboratory of Medical Informatics at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki , a World Wide Web demonstration project , the Medical Acupuncture WebPage. Our objective in developing the Medical Acupuncture WebPage is to provide comprehensive information about many aspects of Medical Acupuncture for both healthcare professionals and patients.
Specifically, our main purposes are:
(1) the rapid and free of charge dissemination of information relevant to acupuncture to medically qualified acupuncturists and acupuncture practitioners
(2) to familiarise non acupuncturists health care professionals about the therapeutic properties of acupuncture
(3) to provide basic educational material to medical students
(4) to inform the public of the advantages of medical acupuncture
(5) to promote the activities of Hellenic Medical Acupuncture Associations
(6) to communicate with other acupuncture associations and professionals around the world
(7) to provide a hypertext system to access other acupuncture information resources on the Internet.
Since its creation, the total of our pages has been accessed more than 160000 times by almost 8000 visitors in 36 countries. 70% of them were health care professionals. It is a fact that the number of professionals who use Internet as a medium to access scientific information and interact with their colleagues , is growing.

Confidence building measures for the co-existence of classical medicine and acupuncture

The physicians who apply acupuncture in what are called the Western countries, where classical medicine is dominating, have succeeded in obtaining positive healing results in high percentages of a large number of diseases and symptoms which usually are not dealt with by the means of classical medicine.
This fact has created a feeling of confidence, esteem and recognition of what acupuncture has to offer as well to the patients of the Western societies. Statistical studies made in America and in Europe show that the number of patients who seek the help of therapy by acupuncture is already large and is steadily growing.
And whereas the curative possibilities of acupuncture are by now accepted not only by many patients but also by many physicians of various specialties of classical medicine,
And whereas the mechanism of the action of acupuncture is interpreted nowadays with the help of modern medical knowledge so that its scientific existence is substantiated,
And whereas in many universities of the Western world acupuncture is taught at the Faculties of Medicine and is applied in state hospital s, in some countries prevail, unfortunately a strong contestation and reaction expressed in disparaging terms and defaming. That means that there is a war, sometimes hidden, sometimes overt, on the side of various levels that support the structure, the functioning and the application of classical medicine, but also on the side of the agents connected with it, against acupuncture.
This fact, which is very unpleasant but is also escalating dangerously, need, in my opinion, to be dealt with as a matter of prime importance, with great attention and seriousness.
It must be made clear to everybody that in medicine there is no place for dogmatism and arrogance but only for help to the suffering human being, always guided by the saying of Hippocrates: .
In this paper I propose and analyze certain precise measures for the building of confidence between classical medicine and acupuncture, with the objective of their harmonious co-existence in the health systems of the various countries for the benefit of the patients and medical science.
A basic primary and firm position is that acupuncture must be exercised only by physicians.

The injection with Procain into a.carotis communis

The injection into the vessels of the head has always been an injection which is very dangerous for the circulation.
In the official teaching opinion it is always considered as a complication and compels to stop the injection.
The author, who feels under an obligation to this analogy, takes up the tradition of Russian physicians who used the injection into the vessels of the head in the therapy of asthma. The author developed a test scheme in which the treated the patients at tinnitus and dizziness. Despite an increase of the dose up to 0,5 ml Procain no complications concerning the circulation were to be seen. The main effect is a "Passage-Syndrom" [BADTKE-Effect) in form of a light dizziness attach which didn't cause any problems when the patient was in a lying position, only reminds of an intensified procain effect. The author carried out more than 40 injections into 4 patients. It's not possible to say whether a relevant improvement of the therapy success is to be achieved by the injection into the vessels. Because of several logical derivable reasons the injection into the vessels should be newly discussed. Why shouldn't it belong to the standard repertoire of the Neural therapy. The author shows procedure, the location of the injection and tries to give suggestions to the further development of this kind of injection in his lecture.

Cerebral palsy in children - methods and results of acupuncture treatment

A group of 73 children with cerebral palsy (8 girls, 15 boys) was treated in years 1995-96. Age: 1-14 years, majority of them in age about 6-7 years. Basic clinical diagnosis was "cerebral palsy" in various forms, types and motoric injury (mostly quadriparesis, diparesis, hypotonics).
If acupuncture treatment, common methods are usually practised - needeling, laser therapy, micro-currents, auriculotherapy (Milani's triangle) etc. In our case none of these methods could be used. We therefore practised acupressure to help to build up new connections in CNS via stimulating the peripheral nerve endings in AP points, taking advantage of the enorm plasticity of brain.
We could make use of everyday engagement of rehabilitation staff who was instructed which points or meridians and in which way should they be stimulated. Our endeavour was to improve the trofic of muscles, to relax the spasms, to enhance the tonus in hypotonics, to help the verticalisation of the figure.
The acupressure was carried out every day before the rehabilitation. We used local points, special points and the points of common effect. Every point was stimulated 30-60 sec. in a mild way. The same time was given to the meridian massage. The "mei-chua" technique was used in metacarpal and -tarsal region (esp. ba-feng, ba-shie), some times we replaced it by brushing.
The main points: The basic points of common use - GV-?0, 16 and 14 were stimulated every time to introduct our further application (also calming, psychic effect). To improve the verticalisation we used the SI-3 and BL-62 points (Tai-yang, GV channel) and/or GB-21 and TW-15 if also kneeling or sitting were missing. The most important problem was to stand up and walk - e.g. legs. To relax spasms we generally stimulated LR-3 (LR-2) or KI-I. To relax the adductors we used GB-30 and SP-10 points, sometimes the massage in the area of adductors (SP meridian). The GB-34 as a special point for muscles and tendons was often stimulated. In this area (shin) the massage of BL meridian (from BL-60 up as far as to BIr4O) and the GB vessel (up to GB-34) was very effective. To improve the right position of feet (non-spastic) we brushed or tapped by "mei-chua the metatarsal region (ba-feng).
Results: In the time of this introductory study 3 older patients (quadriparesis) began to walk (7,11,14 years) with the help of the assistance or alone. Further 3 patients are near to it. The progress of other children (kneeling, sitting, tonus, out of spasms) in this group of children is significant. Acupressure seems to be a good complementary method how to help these children.

A controlled, single-blinded study of acupuncture vs. sham acupuncture on epicondylopathia humeri radialis

In a prospective study 50 patients with epicondylopathia humeri radialis (duration of pain 1 month to 1 year) were randomly divided into 2 groups. In one group 5 classical acupuncture points were used. In the other group needling was carried out at theoretically irrelevant, non-classical sites with the same depth of insertion and stimulation. The patients were blinded. They did not know, if they were treated by real or by sham acupuncture. 3 treatments were performed every third day. Outcome measures included a pressure algometrie, which indicates the pain pressure threshold (kgIcm2) on 2 defined tender points (P1= tendon of m. extensor carpi rad. on the elbow, P2= distal point on the m. ext. carpi radialis) and a vigorimetre. which measures the pain threshold while making a fist. The patients were assessed by an independent (blinded) examiner before and immediate after the first treatment, immediate after the third treatment and 14 days after the third treatment.
The mean difference was calculated between the first and the second evaluation (immediate effect), between the first and the third evaluation (effect after 3 treatments) and between the third and the fourth assessment ( 14 day follow-up). The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, adjusted acc. Bonferroni was used for the data of pressure algometre. The data of vigorimetre were analyzed by using the Paired Sign Test.
In the real acupuncture group the pain threshold improved significantly from 3,18 (P1) and 3,10 (P2) to 3,46 (Pl,P2) immediate after the first treatment. After the third treatment there was a significant improvement to 4,08 (P1)/ 4.10 (P2), which still improved after 14 days follow-up to 4.42 (Pl)/ 4.46 (P2).
In the sham acupuncture group there was also a significant improvement regarding the values before and immediate after the treatment (P 1: 2, 68 to 2, 84; P2 : 3, 46 to 3,69) and after the third treatment (Pl: 3,31; P2: 4,03), but it was less strong than in the real acupuncture group and there was no more improvement 14 days after the third treatment (Pl: 3,34; P2: 4,02). The values for the vigorimetre were similar.
The result suggests that sham acupuncture has a short-term pain relieving effect, which could be explained by the diffuse noxious inhibitory controls (DNIC). In this case the better results, especially the middle-term effect, of real acupuncture could be explained by specific effects, but this hypothesis is still to be proven.

The patients were blinded. They did not know, if they were treated by real or by sham acupuncture. 3 treatments were performed every third day. Outcome measures included a pressure algometrie, which indicates the pain pressure threshold (kgIcm2) on 2 defined tender points (P1= tendon of m. extensor carpi rad. on the elbow, P2= distal point on the m. ext. carpi radialis) and a vigorimetre. which measures the pain threshold while making a fist. The patients were assessed by an independent (blinded) examiner before and immediate after the first treatment, immediate after the third treatment and 14 days after the third treatment.
The mean difference was calculated between the first and the second evaluation (immediate effect), between the first and the third evaluation (effect after 3 treatments) and between the third and the fourth assessment ( 14 day follow-up). The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, adjusted acc. Bonferroni was used for the data of pressure algometre. The data of vigorimetre were analyzed by using the Paired Sign Test.
In the real acupuncture group the pain threshold improved significantly from 3,18 (P1) and 3,10 (P2) to 3,46 (Pl,P2) immediate after the first treatment. After the third treatment there was a significant improvement to 4,08 (P1)/ 4.10 (P2), which still improved after 14 days follow-up to 4.42 (Pl)/ 4.46 (P2).
In the sham acupuncture group there was also a significant improvement regarding the values before and immediate after the treatment (P 1: 2, 68 to 2, 84; P2 : 3, 46 to 3,69) and after the third treatment (Pl: 3,31; P2: 4,03), but it was less strong than in the real acupuncture group and there was no more improvement 14 days after the third treatment (Pl: 3,34; P2: 4,02). The values for the vigorimetre were similar.
The result suggests that sham acupuncture has a short-term pain relieving effect, which could be explained by the diffuse noxious inhibitory controls (DNIC). In this case the better results, especially the middle-term effect, of real acupuncture could be explained by specific effects, but this hypothesis is still to be proven.

In 1984 -1996 we treated in the surgical department 192 patients with burn trauma - 131 out patients and 61 hospitalised (26 adults and 35 children).
Besides of basic surgical therapy, we also used acupuncture (ACU) with steel needle to point 7. of Jung pathway (Lie Cchue) bilateraly. A course of the burns was various, degree II - III with extent from 5 to 20 % of body surface. Duration of application of needles was once a day for 30 minutes, in the acute stage twice a day for 3 0 -120 minutes and in advance epithelization once every other day for 3 0 minutes.
CONCLUSION: Contribution of ACU as a subsidiary method of treatment was positive. ACU markedly participates in reducing the development of burn shock, in shortening the duration of infection, in accelerating epithelization of the skin and experted an analgetic and sedative effect. 61 patients were cured in 4 weeks without a plastic operation, without keloid scars and contractures. Working absence was shortened, less of analgetics, sedatives and antibiotics were used. The use of ACU in burn trauma is simple, quick by acting and easily available.

One of the most important discoveries of ancient Chinese philosophers and physicians was the discovery of chronobiological correlation between normal and pathological processes in a human body and the outer world, and the creation of chronocorrection methods far the corresponding disorders. Among classical methods of chronomedicine the leading place is given to ZiWuLuZhu, which offers a possibility to use the correctly chosen acupoints in the right time and to co-ordinate the way of interacting with these acupoints with the proper timing. Following the classical principles of the given method increases the success rate of the treatment.
Results: Studying the method of ZiWuLuZhu with the help of ancient and modern Chinese original works showed that different authors describe the sequence of Five elements acupoints on the l0th day differently. The analysis of theoretical patterns for the ZiWuLuZhu method on the basis of classical Tavist philosophical ideas made it possible to restore the relationship between the Five elements acupoints on the l0th day and to present their original sequence in accordance with the given concept.
Conclusion: It is possible to explain the theoretical patterns of the Chinese chronotherapeutical methods only through the principles of Taoist philosophy, numerology and astronomy of ancient China. Understanding these methods will sufficiently expand their usage by physicians who practice Zhenjiu.

Patients were using the equipment 30 minutes three times a day for three months and electrodes were placed on the left hand in the region of LI-4 (negative electrode) and SI-5 (positive electrode). Patients was assessed after one two and three months treatment. Follow up was carried out three and six months after termination of treatment. The effect of the treatment was assessed by measuring the ulcers, Doppler measurement, Visual analogue scale for pains, Visual analogue scale for well being, McGill, intake of pain killers and skin temperature.
Both TENS and MOCK-TENS was found to be beneficial in the healing of the leg ulcer and no difference was found between the two groups. Regarding pain management, TENS was found better compared to MOCK-TENS. Surprisingly, an increase of the Doppler was found in the TENS group compared to the MOCK-TENS group, despite no change in the skin temperature was observed.

2) Patients , without any treatment
3) Patients, treated by infrared laser (Laser A or Verum-laser group)
4) patients treated by a device, which looks like the laser tool (B, or Falsum-laser- group) .
As there was a statistical significant difference between needle- acupuncture and the control-group, as well as between both laser groups , and there was no statistical significant difference between the Verum Laser and needle - acupuncture, we suppose, that needles effect and laser effect is equal.
The difference between laser B (Falsum) and the control-group shows the placebo- effect, we had because of the intensity of care.
If the effect of laser-therapy is the same as needle-acupuncture it seems to be the best way to perform a double masked study or acupuncture.
The double masked studies of acupuncture treatment in conjunctivitis sicca was presented at the international conference of dacryology, Stokholm 1996 and at the meeting of dry-eye syndromes in Bermuda 1996, the excerpt will be presented in Zypern, too.

Extremely High Frequency (EHF) or MM Waves - Therapy, which is based on application of non-thermal electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of millimeter (MM) band, can be divided into three independent branches and every version of EHF-Therapy requires special MM Waves generator. For Microwave Resonance Therapy (MRT) a broad stripe generator - with changeable MM EMR frequency - is necessary. It also must be able to stimulate sensory reactions on the certain frequency, which is accepted as a "resonance'' frequency. For EHF-Puncture generators with coherent or "noise" radiation and with dielectric waveguide usually are applied. Sensory reactions (phenomenon De Qi) must appear during influence upon any selected acupoint. EHF- Therapy without individualisation frequency of MM EMR as well as irradiated zone requires generators with horn antenna and fixed frequency. On the base of theoretical and experimental researches we have devised and manufactured a new series of devices for EHF/MMW-Puncture "Artsakh": It consists of a generator unit (avalanche diode is used as an active element for generator in all frequency bands), power supply, control and indication unit. Generator unit is mounted on pantograph by means of which the emission may be led to a selected acupoint or zone on the patient's body. Modes of operation are following: continuous generation, internal meander amplitude- modulation and external modulation. Automatic switch off for generator is used when the exposition time is over. "Artsakh-0lm" has two regimes of emission: coherent frequency with f0 ± 4 GHz, where frequency f0, may lie at any point in the range from 25 to l20 GHz, and "noise" with f0 ± 10 GHz. "Artsakh-02m" also has two regimes of generation: "noise" with frequencies from 42 to 95 GHz and combination of coherent emission (frequency 60.0 ± 1 GHz) and "noise". Su Jok (Hand and Foot) Acupuncture is a general term describing a system of disease treatment, comprised of various methods of stimulating only the hands and feet with medical instruments, such as needles or moxa, etc. Su Jok is a two- dimensional system including physical and methaphysical treatment utilizing the miniature Byol Meridians in hands and feet. Prof. Park Jae Woo is the author of this method. We treated successfully the patients suffering from bronchial asthma and attendant allergic diseases such as atopic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. The treatment was carried out through reflex stimulation of corresponding structures of affected organs and other involved systems such as hypophysis, epinephros, brain and spinal cord. Su Jok, combined with conventional therapy gives good medical effect. Besides, statistically verified improvement of objective indicator of bronchospirography and level of cortical hormones, is noted. Our experience has shown that Su Jok acupuncture can be employed successfully for treating allergical diseases, including those which cannot be controlled well by the Western medicine.

Blindness - is there any influence of acupuncture?

My question starting this study, was, if there is any effect of acupuncture in blindness, like non-ophthalmologists and even not medical doctors, practising acupuncture, tell the patients.
At first we studied the literature of acupuncture and secondly we observed patients suffering from blindness from different diseases. Visual acuity, visual field , colour function-tests and electroophthalmologic tests before and after treatment were performed. The patients, we observed, suffered from blindness by Retinitis centralis serosa, from Retinitis pigmentosa and from diabetic retinopathia .
The result of this study was, that there exists no paper and no book, which describes blindness as a good indication of acupuncture . Only Pietrovsky wrote about effects of acupuncture on blindness, but he did not evaluate functional or anatomical parameters.
In our observation Acupuncture improved the general condition but did not effect visual functions in the patients study.

Combination of applying SU JOK and YUMEIHO therapy

For treatment of 82 patients with the diseases of the locomotive system of vertebrogenic etiology YUMEIHO therapy was applied (special Eastern massage- manual therapy according to MASAYUKI SAIONJI).
Since the very first day of treatment a diagnosis was established for all patients with the subsequent treatment applying the method of SU JOK (author PARK, JAE WOO, 1987) on the physical level at the different systems of correspondence on hands and feet. Various methods and instruments of SU JOK acupuncture as well as massage of hands and feet were applied.
YUMEIHO therapy continued in parallel.
The given combination of using YUMEIHO and SU JOK therapy allowed the course of treatment to shortened for 2-3 times: from l0-12 (individual observations in l990-1995) to 3 -5 procedures, achieving the disappearance of complaints and the significant improvement 81.25 percent of patients.
The application of YUMEIHO and SU JOK is being discussed with preventive aims in view.
Owing to SU JOK therapy, a prompt regression of pain syndrome and normalization of muscular tones were observed, this encouraging the successful performance of manual therapy.

The sensory interaction in mechanism of acupuncture in treatment of trigger phenomenes

Purpose is the study of interaction of somatosensory evoked potentials ( SEPs ) in the treatment of algesic myofascial syndroms by acupuncture.
Methods. 18 patients with myofascial algesic syndrome (MAS) of m.brachioradialis were investigated. MAS was characterised by palpable taut band in proximal part of m.brachioradialis and trigger pain in elbow joint. The neurophysiological complex ``Key-point" /Denmark/ was used. SEPs were reggisted using standard method of stimulation n.medianus in the region of wrist. At first the stimulation was performed on the side of algesic syndrome and on the contralateral side before and after the acupuncture in 4GI points and in zone of trigger phenomena /local point/.
Results. SEPs in exacerbation were characterised by asymmetrical responses during stimulation of "health" and invaded sides. For the most part the amplitude of early components of SEP was higher during the stimulation on the side of algesic syndrome. The differences between SEPs of the "health" and invaded sides were determined in amplitude of N20, P27 components. The increase of latencies of SEPs in Erb point and in C7 level took place after the acupuncture procedure by reducing method. The increase of SEP's amplitude in spinal projections and a strongly marked decrease of amplitude in Erb's point were revealed.
Conclusions. The change of amplitude and latencies of SEP's components before treatment may be considered as hyperexcitability and hypersynchronization in activity of neurons responsive to somatosensory stimuls. Normalization of this data is consequence of afferent interaction on different levels of central nervous system, first of all in unspecific systems of brain stem.

Liability and asymmetry of the acupuncture points temperature as a criterion for channels state

West-European physicians convinced themselves that the acupuncture is an efficient method. Acupuncture's advantageous using depends directly on diagnosis exactness that is the exactness of revealing of the channels (functional systems) pathology.
It is the pulse diagnosis that Chinese physicians can use. Most of West-European physicians are not able to use it in due measure, but they are not satisfied also in full measure with widely used methods of' instrumental diagnosis (Nakatani, Akabane, Foll and their variations).
During a quarter of the century is pursued s study on using of the acupuncture points temperature as an indicator of the organism state. The opinion of ours had been expressed (V.I. Oriel, I994) that some temperature characteristics of Cutaneous Zones of Projections of Acupuncture Points (CZ PAP) could be of diagnosis signs of a channels lesion.
In this paper the results of the temperature characteristics analysis are presented (absolute measures, lability, asymmetry of like CZ PAP). The temperature measurements were done by means of low-inertia electron thermometer (mock-up version with precision of `0,1°C, the temperature-sensitive element surface of 1.5 mm2 ) on the CZ PAPs located on terminal phalanges of hands and feet of patients with duodenal ulcer (36 men) , enuresis (14 men) and chronic bronchitis with asthmatic component ( 17 men ) . In one examination 4 or more measurement cycles were taken. Temperature examination was performed before treatment, in the course of this (during scarring in the case of duodenal ulcer) and at the coming of clinical signs of recovery.
Statistic treatment of examination results revealed: a) that temperature asymmetry of like CZ PAPs, lability and asymmetry of temperature lability could be of signs of the channels state and b) that using of absolute temperature data of CZ PAPs as a diagnostic criterion is problematic at this stage of our study.

It is the pulse diagnosis that Chinese physicians can use. Most of West-European physicians are not able to use it in due measure, but they are not satisfied also in full measure with widely used methods of' instrumental diagnosis (Nakatani, Akabane, Foll and their variations).
During a quarter of the century is pursued s study on using of the acupuncture points temperature as an indicator of the organism state. The opinion of ours had been expressed (V.I. Oriel, I994) that some temperature characteristics of Cutaneous Zones of Projections of Acupuncture Points (CZ PAP) could be of diagnosis signs of a channels lesion.
In this paper the results of the temperature characteristics analysis are presented (absolute measures, lability, asymmetry of like CZ PAP). The temperature measurements were done by means of low-inertia electron thermometer (mock-up version with precision of `0,1°C, the temperature-sensitive element surface of 1.5 mm2 ) on the CZ PAPs located on terminal phalanges of hands and feet of patients with duodenal ulcer (36 men) , enuresis (14 men) and chronic bronchitis with asthmatic component ( 17 men ) . In one examination 4 or more measurement cycles were taken. Temperature examination was performed before treatment, in the course of this (during scarring in the case of duodenal ulcer) and at the coming of clinical signs of recovery.
Statistic treatment of examination results revealed: a) that temperature asymmetry of like CZ PAPs, lability and asymmetry of temperature lability could be of signs of the channels state and b) that using of absolute temperature data of CZ PAPs as a diagnostic criterion is problematic at this stage of our study.

We conducted the treatment of neurologic patients by vacuum therapy. Vacuum therapy is one of the types of reflexotherapy based on the influence by local rarefied air upon the skin in the area of reflexogenous zones. Since the treatment is carried out by means of special cupping-glasses the method is called the cupping-glasses therapy or the method of sliding cupping glass. Mechanism of treating effect: Vacuum artificially made inside the cupping-glass due to the pressure difference effects the skin. During the procedure the removal of venous stagnation, increasing of lymph blood circulation, stimulation of hemopoiesis and nonspecific antiallergic immunity occur. Moreover, the cupping-glasses therapy resulted in non-specific stimulation of the local vegetative reaction according to the principle of adaptation to direct regulation of the vascular tonus. 24 patients were treated after insult; 35 - with convulsive syndromes; 28- with the exacerbation of osteochondros. The cupping-glass massage was applied both independently and in combination with acupuncture. Effectiveness of treatment in complex with acupuncture on 40% exceeds the treatment only with cupping-glasses massage. At the same time the effectiveness of treatment by cupping - glasses massage as compared with combined treatment is 30% below.
Conclusions: The cupping-glasses massage can be successfully applied in neurology. In combination with acupuncture it increases the effectiveness of treatment. While examining the remote results 30% of patients - disabled persons has restored their ability to work. In the group of patients received medicinal treatment there were no cases of restoration of ability to work.

For the first time the cupping-glasses massage was applied to the pregnant women. 126 pregnant suffering from early and late gestational toxicosis were treated. 78% of all had attendant vasculocardic, endocrine, gastroenteric diseases, nephritis and others.
In the course of treatment with the cupping-glasses massage no medicines were given to the pregnant. In the control group 128 pregnant received medicinal treatment in the hospital.
In the first group of patients who received the cupping-glasses massage during pregnancy the assessment of the newborn infants at birth was made according to Apgar scale. With 8-9 marks 70% infants were born ; 6-7 marks - 22% ; 4-5 marks - 8%. There were no cases of deadbirth (during first 7 days).
In the second group of pregnant who received medicinal treatment with 8-9 marks 25% infants were born; 6-7 marks - 51% ; 4-5 marks- 23% ; 1% were born dead.
Conclusions: Vacuum therapy is an effective method of treatment in obstetrics. Advantage: it has no collateral effects on the pregnant's body and foetus. It sufficiently improves the uteroplancental circulation of blood. It's a preventive measure against infant's and mother's death. Treatment is carried out in outpatient conditions that's why being highly effective it doesn't require the pregnant women to be hospitalized.

Cessation of smoking with the help of acupuncture

In the period between 1993 - 1995, 190 smokers were subjected to acupuncture treatment, after seeking assistance in order to stop smoking. In present study 104 men (54.7%) and 86 women (45.3%) were involved at the age of 19 - 73. Their age was (X ± SD) 40 ± 10.8 years and the average age at which they started smoking was 19.6 ± 4.4 years, while the average consumption was 35.7 ± 15.6 cigarettes a day.
The year-packs resulting were 29.8 ± 1 8.8. An 11 - 15 points (Traditional Acupuncture Points and Auricular Points) acupuncture protocol was applied in 1-5 sessions, of twenty minute duration every 2nd - 3rd day. Additionally, an information brochure about smoking was distributed and there was also psychological support and guidelines for a healthier way of living. 75.8% of the participants acknowledged a good therapeutic result, while 72.9% showed signs of acute deprivation and 53.6% developed aversion symptoms (alteration of taste / olfaction, nausea). 130 participants (68.4%), 76 men (73.1%) and 54 women (62.8%), stopped smoking for at least 1 month.
The participants were monitored for a period of 1 year, in order to check whether they would start smoking again (follow up). 61 persons (46.9%) began smoking again, 47 of them within the first three months and 14 later. A prolonged - more than three months cessation of smoking was observed in 83 persons (43.7%), 48 men (46.2%) and 35 women (40.7%). Persons seeking the help of acupuncture in their effort to stop smoking, will find this method effective. The initial and prolonged (more than three months) cessation period, which was achieved due to the protocol mentioned above, is one of the mentioned in international scientific documentation compared to other acupuncture protocols as well as other methods of medical intervention for the cessation of smoking.

Acupuncture against urge- and mixed type incontinence among older women in Sweden

Women with urge- or mixed type incontinence are commonly treated with bladder- training and anticolinergics. In spite of these treatments many of the women find their condition unsatisfactory. Some studies have been published which shows that acupuncture might have a positive effect when the bladder function is disturbed. There are also some animal experiments which shows that stimulation in an acupuncture-like way can affect the periurethral muscles. The purpose of this pilot study was to see if acupuncture can influence urgency, leakage and life quality.
Method: 15 women who were treated at the incontinence unit at Rosenlends Geriatric Clinic in Stockholm and with unsatisfactory outcome with standard treatments participated in this open study. As measurements we used a) subjectively scoring of the discomfort of urgency and leakage b) life quality measurement with the help of a structured interview c) registration of urination habits with the help of Inco-test (protocol over the volume of urine and frequency as well as the leakage in the form of weighting nappies). All these test ,were done before and after the treatments. Global scoring was also done after the treatments and at a follow-up three months later. Manual deqi acupuncture was performed twice weekly and the total amount of treatments was 12. The following acu-points were chosen: BL23, 31, 32, 33, KI3, SP6 and LI11, all bilaterally. At the first treatment we choose four of the above points and increased thereafter so that in the end all 14 points were used. Non-parametric statistics was used.
Results: Four of the patients had urge incontinence while the rest had mixed type. Mean age was 76,4 years (68-82 years). Mean duration of incontinence was 3,7 years (1-11 years). All completed the study. Globally clear improvements were seen at the 3-month follow-up among 8 of the 15 women. The scoring of the urge quality, urge intensity, leakage frequency and urination no the nights all showed significant improvements, p<0,05 even at the 3-months follow-up. Life quality improved significantly from the time before treatments to the 3-months follow-up, p<0,01. Objectively measuring of leakage also showed a significant reduction, p<0,05, at the 3-months follow-up.
Conclusion: Somatic afferent stimulation in the form of Acupuncture has in this open study shown positive results at follow-up 3 months after the termination of treatments. This study should be followed by controlled studies to see if the effects are unspecific or specific. More open studies should be done in order to investigate the duration of effects, the optimal frequency and number of treatments as well as the optimal point selection.

Using the HFOT by the apparatus TEFRA N 53 Standard III (Messerschmidt ,Berlin ) ,we evaluated the possibilities of complementary diagnostics (the modification of AKABANE's test , finding out the s.c. disturbing fields and eliminating them) and the therapy based on the essential principles of acupuncture in selected acupuncture zones, course of meridians, in the microzones of acupuncture microsystems including the oral cavity and according to the principles of the Korean SU JOK Therapy on both hands and feet.
The most frequent indications : Pains , disorders of the motor and sensitive functions of the spine , locomotor apparatus , the nervous system (including the vegetative one ) , allergic and another diseases of the respiratory system , skin , excessive failing out the hair , hard of hearing, tinnitus etc. The HFOT led to improvement or retreat of troubles in all 500 tested patients depending on the proportionality between the functional and organic component of the disease given. HFOT influenced the general physical and psychic conditions also in 18 patients after the chemotherapy of metastatic cancer diseases very positively.
We regard therefore the HFOT as a valuable contribution both to the treatment of acute and chronic painful conditions and to the therapy especially of oxydation , blood supporting , metabolism and immunity system disorders of the human body.

Analysis of data of auricular diagnostic and therapy of 521 patients with various kinds of alopecia

During the last 18 months in the Clinic of dermatology and venerology of Medical university - Sofia 521 patients with various types of alopecia were treated. As part of the complex examination all of them have been checked for the sensitivity of various points on the auricle.
Patients have been divided in three groups: 274 patients with alopecia areata, 120 with alopecia androgenica and 131 with male pattern alopecia. Distribution of the painful points in more than 50% of the patients of the particular type of alopecia is as following:

There exist quite many treatment means in the Chinese traditional medicine. They have their own conception explaining the causes and the course of the disease, they have made up their classification clinical-development forms, such as vulgaris, arthritic, hyperaemia and skin ulcer.

At present time various methods of laser therapy (LT) are widely used in rheumatoids arthritis (RA) treatment.
The purpose of investigation: to determine of laserpuncture (LP) clinical effectiveness among other LT methods in RA concerning pain and articular inflammation.
Results of treatment in 330 patients with diagnosed RA in acute phase in resistance of bases therapy (voltaren, indometacin in 100-150 mg during 24h.) were studied.
The investigations were carried out with double-blind controlled placebo tests. Intravascular radiation (IR) with wavelength 0.63 mkm , articular surface radiation (ASR) with wavelength 0,82 mkm in continuos regime and LP with 0,89 mkm in pulsed modulated regime with frequency 1-100 Hz methods were compared.
Assessment results of treatment in all groups was performed in accordance with integral clinical value and blood indexes dynamics.
Results indicated positive effects (65%) in patients treated with ASR and LP and were similar. However, ASR method requires 100 points/session versus 10 points/session in LP. Methods of ASR and LP in doses 0,004-0,02 Dj/sm2 (density of energy flow) provided maximal analgesic effect without any side effects and complications. Usage of IR was less effective (12%) and in two cases status impairment or pain and articular syndrome activization were seen.
Conclusion: LP is an optimal supplementary method (in above mentioned parameters) in RA treatment, In our opinion, IR method of LT has some disadvantages and less efficiency. Thus, this method should not be recommended in RA treatment.

New non-invasive method in healing of injured has been practised for four years now.
Wounded were treated using modern and traditional medical procedures by working in synergy. Magnets are set up separately or as a trap, plaster fixed to skin, using the knowledge and skills of acupuncture and anatomy with full respect of the gravitation force.
The method with magnetic trap is patented in Yugoslavia under patent right P566/95.
Apart from war injuries the trap is used in peace time for treatment of occupational, sports and household accidents.
Ferrous foreign bodies at different locations were evacuated and that 44% in the period from 5-40 days, 2% arrived under skin after a year. Slow migration of foreign body produces minimal injury and destruction to the surrounding tissue in which proximity and through which it is removed. There were no side effects.
Ferrous method is non-invasive inexpensive, applicable both on inpatients and outpatients and in the field service therapy.

Laserotherapy has positive biological effects and anth - fllamatory, antioedema effects and analgesia. We treated 18 patients with periarthritis humeroscapularis, 14 were women patients.
The laser was locally applied at the AC ~ points Sj 14, Sj 15, Li 15, Li 10, Sj 5, Si 3, three times a week for the first week and twice a week for the second and the third week. After first treatment 12 of patients had pain - alleviating effect. After 6-7 treatments al had pain - alleviating effect and complete recovery of shoulder's motor activity.

Congenital or acquired non-effectiveness of stress limitative systems is an important condition of dysfunction in organism resistance to some external medium pathogenic factors.
Analysis of 231 bronchial asthma patients treatment and special literature data gives an evidence of as a result training and standardization acupuncture influence upon mainly central (serotoninergic, opioidergic, etc.) and mainly peripheral (antioxydantic, adenosine, etc.) stress limitative systems.
Disease clinical remission or significant improvement after the acupuncture course were accompanied by decreasing of reactive anxiety level (Lusher test, Spilberger-Hanin test), by increasing, of initially reduced T-lymphocyte and IgA blood levels and by decreasing of nonspecific bronchus hyperactivity (inhalational test with acetylcholine; - pW0.05.
By learning the acupuncture treatment results one year after among bronchial asthma patients we have revealed decreasing of meteolability (80% cases), increasing of nonspecific resistivity to acute respiratory diseases (60% cases) and reliable reducing of amount of attack disease in comparison with catamnesis data (pW0.01).

The aim of this study was to compare the traditional Chinese diagnostic syndroms with modern objective state indexes of the bronchial asthma patients. 102 patients with bronchial asthma were examined by the clinical, biochemical, immunological, functional and electrophysiological methods. The data basis consisted of 241 indexes of patient state, Deficiency of the spleen yang being revealed with the probability of 0.32 was in the reliable correlation with the markers for the atopic state (eosinophilia and the blood microcytosis), with the bronchial inflammation signs (sputum neutrophiles) and with the heart, kidneys and liver functional systems puncture potentials. Deficiency of the kidney qi being revealed with the probability of 0.28 was in the reliable correlation with the bronchial permeability (p < 0.05). Stagnation of the liver qi being revealed with the probability of 0.23 was in the reliable correlation with the bronchial hyperactivity signs (according to the inhalational acetylcholine test), with the blood IgE and ll-oxycorticosteroids concetration and with the granulocyte migration inhibition indexes as well as vegetative dysbalance indexes.

TCM and Family Medicine: integrated care for the 21st century

In China, TCM and biomedicine are well-integrated, which is not the case in the West, where only one TCM therapy, namely, acupuncture, is beginning to attain the status of a medical sub-specialty. In China, however, the relatively new discipline of family medicine, is not yet integrated into the biomedical system, as it is in the West. Whether the setting is the East or the West, there are several specific advantages to integrating TCM and family medicine. First of all, the TCM notion of health as equilibrium, symbolized by the complementary opposition of Yin and Yang, links prevention, treatment and health promotion within the family medicine context of continuing, personalized and coordinated primary care. Secondly. TCM diagnosis is an intensive holistic process which takes physical, mental and spiritual factors into account. Integrated TCM and biomedical diagnosis is properly referred to as "dual diagnosis," and it increases the family physician's chances of making an accurate assessment of the patient's condition. TCM diagnosis acknowledges the value of biomedical empirical analysis, use of laboratory equipment, facilities and so on. Third, the integrated family physician has more options for providing the treatment of choice to the patients. Relatively safe, non-invasive TCM techniques may be the initial option, followed by the stronger-and often more invasive and iatrogenic-biomedical therapeutic modalities. As for referral, the patient may be sent to other TCM or biomedical consultants for expert second opinions and more specialized diagnosis and care. Finally, competence and compassion are the keys to viable integration of the two medical systems in the 21st century, in the interest of enhancing the quality of care for all our dear patients.

Qi Gong is an essential part of what has been aptly termed the "great treasure house" of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It was defined as a key preventive and curative therapy over 2000 years ago, along with herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage and other TCM therapeutic modalities. There are many schools and styles of Qi Gong. I have developed a gentle and harmonious "internal" style of Qi Gong, in keeping with my Buddhist heritage. Qi Gong encompasses exercises that stimulate a sense of total relaxation and, in so doing, facilitate health and well-being. These begin with the four basic breathing techniques and then expand to include concentration and posture exercises. The essence of Qi Gong is to learn how to control the flow of vital energy throughout one's body. Qi Gong is not a panacea, but a preventive and curative approach to primary care that complements biomedicine. It is, above all, a personal empowerment strategy and a way for physicians and acupuncturists to enhancing their healing ability. The medical Qi Gong I teach embodies appreciation of the natural environment as well as loving kindness and compassion, for without these no therapy can be truly worthwhile.

Epidemiologic research suggests that a substantial minority of the population will experience some signs and symptoms of craniomandibular disorder, and that about 5% of the population is in need of appropriate therapy. The TMJ type of craniomandibular disorder is a complex condition that may be characterized in terms of chronic dysfunction and distress. This paper delineates a viable TCM approach to aligning-and harmonizing-the TMJ.
The approach, which encompasses acupuncture as well as manipulation/massage and features lateral, midline and medial vital energetic alignment techniques, has proven effective in the medical clinic. More specifically, TMJ dysfunction blocks the flow of Qi along the six major vital pathways of Yang energy, namely, the Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Stomach and Gallbladder meridians.

Tinnitus has strong psycho-altering effects and it poorly responses to modern, as well as traditional therapies. Location of the disorder and its etiology, varies - it may be located in the external, middle or inner ear, caused by inflammation, insufficient blood supply, inadequate fluid secretion or resorption, metabolic disorders, by hydropsy of the membraneous labyrinth, toxic damage, or its location can be in auditory pathway, most frequently caused by viral infection or another disease of the nervous system, also it can be evoked by a reflex or associated with general disease.
In my country patients with tinnitus seek acupuncture therapy only after the failure of modern conventional medical treatment as a therapy of the last resort and this accounts for its relatively minor therapeutical effects. According to the theory of Oriental Medicine tinnitus can be caused by the both - internal and external causes and for its therapy are used: Five Shu points + Yuan + Luo to treat deficient or excessive activity of the involved organs, specific points and local points.
Tinnitus as a chronic disease has multifactorial pathogenesis and another factors participate in addition to main etiological factor in the course of the disease e.g.:
1 . the presence of scars, particularly those located in certain areas
2. tone disorders of the muscles round the spinal column, blockades in spinal segments, muscular hypertones particularly in the area of deep muscles of cervical segments
3. fields of disturbance ( Stoerfelder) especially in orofacial region
4. intolerance or allergy on some food components, frequently somehow related to the gall bladder
5. psychical disharmony:
A. involved in the development of the disease
B. reducing tolerance of the disease
C. activating the disturbing effects of the scars

In my country patients with tinnitus seek acupuncture therapy only after the failure of modern conventional medical treatment as a therapy of the last resort and this accounts for its relatively minor therapeutical effects. According to the theory of Oriental Medicine tinnitus can be caused by the both - internal and external causes and for its therapy are used: Five Shu points + Yuan + Luo to treat deficient or excessive activity of the involved organs, specific points and local points.
Tinnitus as a chronic disease has multifactorial pathogenesis and another factors participate in addition to main etiological factor in the course of the disease e.g.:
1 . the presence of scars, particularly those located in certain areas
2. tone disorders of the muscles round the spinal column, blockades in spinal segments, muscular hypertones particularly in the area of deep muscles of cervical segments
3. fields of disturbance ( Stoerfelder) especially in orofacial region
4. intolerance or allergy on some food components, frequently somehow related to the gall bladder
5. psychical disharmony:

B. reducing tolerance of the disease
C. activating the disturbing effects of the scars

The effects of auriculotherapy and dry needling on myofascial pain syndrome

The Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common neuromuscular dysfunction due to trigger points (TrPs) in skeletal muscle. A myofascial TrP is a pathological sensomotor system responsible for a disturbed functional state of muscle, segmental apparatus of the spinal cord, supraspinal structures of the central nervous system (CNS). The long loop reflex ( LLR) component is realised not only through a spinal cord segment but also through some suprasegmental structures. LLR to electrical stimulation (impulses of 1 ms in duration, 0.1 Hz frequency) of the medianus nerve were studied in 16 patients (aged 14-50 years) with trapezius MPS and 10 healthy aged-matched individuals. The reflex response of trapezius muscle was registrated using concentric needle electrode with a recording area of 0.07 mn and 4-chunnel EMG equipment (Counterpoint. Dantec). The auricular acupuncture (AAP) was made in the internal part of antitragus points and in CNS point (4-6 AAP needles simultaneously). At the same time the patient underwent a dry needling of trapezius muscle TrP by means of disposable entry needle. The needle was partially withdrawn and reinserted into another part of TrP. These procedures could be repeated until the local tenderness and pain referred from that particular TrP will usually disappear immediately, and frequently, completely.
There were statistically significant changes in the structure of LLR the muscles with myofascial TrPs after the complex influence. This clinical study confirms the effects of AAP on the reflex at spinal and supraspinal levels. and therapeutic effect on emotional factors influence muscle pain. The formation TrP is influenced and controlled by the CNS, and a needle stimulation to a TrP may deliver a strong signal to the CNS to induce a strong reflex and torelieve or reorganize the CN S control of TrP.

For testing the most relevant food allergens were chosen - egg yolk, white of an egg, cow's milk, wheat flour.
The testing was performed in a series of 30 patients, predominantly polyvalent allergics. In none of the patients the manifestations of food allergy were the dominant clinical sign, and the food allergy was so far not diagnosed in them. It was found that there is a practically 100% congruence of the system EAV measurement and of a potentiated allergen, natural matter, or diagnostic allergen. A significant correlation of 70-80%o exists between intradermal test and EAV, the least correlation of 30% is between the specific IgE and intradermal test, as well as between specific IgE and EAV. When using the method of assessment of specific IgE, the correlation with other methods was found practically in the cases, where the patient was not allergic to the given foodstuff.
It appears that the EAV method represents a great contribution also for the diagnostics of food allergies. It has practically no limitations, does not burden the patient, is cheap, reliable, and makes a timely diagnosis of food allergies possible as early as in the infants, which also makes a timely solution of the whole problem possible.

Auricular changes in patients ill with Turner's syndrome

The essence of Turner's syndrome is that one sex chromosome is missing (45,X0) or it is mosaicism. This syndrome reveals for one from 2500 alive born girls and manifests itself in falling behind in physical, bone development, in small stature and other characteristic appearance, for example, short, thick neck of sphinx, low line of hair growing, eye slit, low situated ear helix and so on. Turner's syndrome also shows itself in anomalies of visceral organs, dysgenesis of gonads, absence of sexual development and osteoporosis appearing because of that.
In literature we could not find data about changes (anomalies) of separate structures of ear helix (auricula). We were observing, examining and treating 1 1 patients under 14 years old, for whom diagnosis of Turner's syndrome was approved. For ten of them anomalies of inside structures of ear helix (auriculus) were found: for nine patients deformations of antitragus was found, for seven of them antitragus were hypertrophic and for two of them were hypotropic. Measuring electroconductivity of separate points (acupuncture) microzones we found more reliable disbalance for negative and positive in microzone of hypothalamus. We are going on working with most deeper researchers.
Summarizing we could recommend for endocrinologists, pediatricians and other specialists to pay attention to morphology of separate structures of ear helix of the patient and to parameters of electric measurements, what could enrich clinical view and diagnosis of Turner's syndrome

Myopuncture and auriculoacupuncture in patients with contracture

Purpose.The algesic syndrome, caused by myogenic trigger points(TrPs) ,in mimetic muscles, is most important in patients with secondary contracture as complication of Bell's palsy; the morphological characteristics and methods of treatment this clinical phenomena were not studied.
Methods. Small pieces / 1 X 1 mm/ of MM were obtained from area of TrP by needle biopsy in 15 patients and 4 cadavers. The sections were examined in electronmicroscope «Gem-7». Blink reflex was studied on electromyograph «Counterpoint» /Denmark/ . At the same time needle biopsy removes pain and we may consider it as the treatment. The area of TrP was punctured by the needle Tru-cut /Germany/. In 5-10 minutes the auriculoacupuncture (AP) was made in the representative for the facial nerve points. The method was tested on 80 patients with EMG control.
Results. The muscle biopsies from 15 patients revealed similar morphologic findings characterised by «ragged-red and moth eaten fibers», degeneration, splitting and fragmentation of fibers, enlarged mitochondria. Results of the treatment allowed to come to the conclusion that the method greatly influenced the mimetic muscles in decreasing the algesic syndrome in all 80 patients. The EMG examination of blink reflex on electromyograph «Counterpoint» /Denmark/ showed the reduce of reflex excitability after that. The difference in latency R2 of direct response in comparison with control was significant/p<0,05/.
Conclusion. Our results support the occurrence of muscle disorder and may emerge as the key to treatment. The method of treatment was noted to exclude the nociceptors from area of TrP and to provide the afferentation to visceral brain and brain stem. It was recommended to be employed in patients with contracture of mimetic muscles.

Acupuncture for clinical pathogenetic versions of bronchial asthma

In an effort to evaluate the effects of classical acupuncture on clinical pathogenetic versions of bronchial asthma, corporal /CRT/ and auricular /ART/ reflex therapy was used in 79 cases of light and medium severity - 56 atopic /Gr.I/, 11 infection-related /Gr.II/, 9 pathogenetic receptor-mediated /Gr.III/ and 3 immune-complex /Gr.IV/.
Gr.I indicated IgE hyperproduction in 64%, and increased specific sensitivity of the respiratory canal in 84% of the cases. In all cases the CRT clinical efficacy was evaluated at 71%. The therapeutic intervention primarily involved P and R channel points.
In Gr.II, 64% of the cases required preliminary sanation of chronic infection loci. The best effects were obtained with CRT/ART combinations.
In Gr.III, ART produced a seven-fold increase in non-specific resistance of the respiratory canal, with the most pronounced clinical effect. The strategy involved points 55, 71,14, 101. In Gr.IV, the effect was symptomatic.
Thus differentiated approach is of topical importance in corporal and auricular reflex therapy for some clinical pathogenetic versions of bronchial asthma, with cases of high IgE levels cured in CRT, and those of increased specific and non-specific sensitivity of the respiratory canal in ART techniques. The best clinical efficacy was attained in cases of atopic and pathogenetic receptor mediated bronchial asthma.

The aim of the investigation was to study peculiarities of changes in electroconductivity in Yuan points (AC) during the influence of different extremal conditions. 120 healthy volunteers (from 18 to 25 years old) have been exposed to the influence of high temperature (45 C) and humidity (95%), altitude (4500 meters high), fatigue in intensive 6-hour and daily physical loading. We have esfimated electroconductivity (EC) in Yuan points ( 100 mkA), hemodvmamic, neuroendocrine , regulation, cardiorespiratory system.
We have pointed out the activation of AC in any influence (average increase of conductivity was 5-10 mkA), but the level of activation of different AC hasn't been the same. In 6-hour loading significant increase of activation of Heart, Liver and Kidney Channels has been marked. Daily physical loading has stimulated activation of Liver Channel and oppression of Spleen channel. Stimulating channels of Liver and Kidney and oppression Heart Channels has been marked in influencing high temperature and humidity. We have pointed out the activation of Liver channel in attitude (4500 metres high). Interrelations between Acupuncture Channels follow the rule of 5 elements, Character of EC changes has correlated with physiological and biochemical changes. In greater degree it refers to Yuan points.
So indexes of EC in Yuan (AC) points reflect the functional state of organs and physiological systems of the body.

Non-all conductionless syndrome includes non-all restriction of muscle construction, hypesthesia in nerve damaged zone and electrophysyological marcs: depression of M-response, low speed of nerve impulse for electromyography and others. We have experience 114 patients (87 male and 27 female) from 16 to 60 years old, with extremity nerve damage (126 nerves) such as plexus brachialis (40 cases), n.radialis (18), n.ulnaris (20), n.medianus (10), n.tibialis (3), n.pereneus (6), n.femoralis (3), n.ischadicus (5), and other. Damage mechanism is different such as fracture, joint luxation, cut, traction damage, complication of operation, injection and other. Level of damage was different too. 9 patients had pain syndrome. Time from trauma to treatment start is variable (from 2 week to 2 years). All patients have been examinated: sensitivity, power of muscles, sweating, skin temperature, electromyography. 32 patients have been operated: more often neurolysis with implantation of electrode (nichrom 50 micron isolated with ftoroplast catheter) for electrostimulation . 84 patients have conservative treatment only (massage, medicative gymnastic, physiotherapy, paraffin application, vitamins injections (Bl, B6, B12,C), and other. We treat 48 patients with acupuncture as part of conservative treatment. We used corporal, auricular and su jok (foot- hand) acupuncture and moxibustion. We constatate the good effect of acupuncture and decrease of the pain syndrome . 8 patients had indication for operation, but after 2-3 week of acupuncture, operation was not necessary.

Acupuncture in Obstetrics

Prophylactic of the maternal and perinatal mortality is the No1 problem in the contemporary obstetrics. 80% of pregnants have different complications. In the majority of cases it is a gestosis of the late pregnancy, manifestative in proteinuria, hypertenzia and oedemas. Simultaneously more, then 80% of pregnants have extragenital pathology: anemia, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, hormonal disbalance, osteochondrosis, functional nervous disorders, myopia and others. In most manuals of the Traditional Chinese Medicine is stated, that acupuncture should not be used in pregnants with gestosis. But we think; that acupuncture can have a very good effect in complex treatment of this pathology.
METHODS. We have developed new method of treatment of these complications. It have been already treated 86 pregnants. Control group was been received medicamental therapy. We used points in IG,GI, E, V, P, MC channels and auricular points 34, 35, 55. For the first time was applied cupping massage and moxibustions in the form of special column of pressing herbs. At the same time we were carried out cure of extragenital pathology and fetoplacental insufficiency. The course of treatment included from 8 to 12 procedures in ambulant conditions.
RESULTS. In the main group: 86% of pregnants had birth in time. Al1 babies had marks 8-9 on the Apgar scale. In the control group 40% of pregnants had different complications, such as: premature birth, dead birth, eclampsism, hemorrhage. Only 48% babies, borned in control group, had marks 8-9, the others had marks 6-7 on the Apgar scale.
CONCLUSIONS. Our methods shows very good results in the cure of pathology of pregnancy. The treatment carried out in ambulant conditions, the pregnant didn't get medicamental load. Thus, the therapy of obstetric pathology is an effective remedy of the maternal and perinatal mortality.

Brain infarct, (BI) and its consequence of old people is one of the most severe disorders. The mortality is about. 12-15%. (data of WHO). The main causes of the BI are atherosclerosis, essential and secondary hypertension cardiovascular diseases, vasculitis, blood pathology. More than 80% of such patients have accompanying disorders, such as: coronary disease diabetes mellitus, endocrinopathy. We made analysis effectiveness acupuncture in group of patients who had BI.
METHODS. We were treated 48 patients with a median age of 60 (range 57-70) who had BI 1-5 years ago. The second group included 40 patients, who were treated by medicamental therapy. We used complex treatment: acupuncture, auriculotherapy, cupping massage and moxibustions. The cure included 3 courses (8-10 procedures) with intervals (7 days). At the same time we carried out. treatment of accompanying pathology, correction of immunity system.
RESULTS. 86% of patients had considerable improvement, manifestative in decrease of headache, dizziness, stabilisation of blood pressure, enhancement of movement, increase of immunity. The effectiveness of cure was confirmed by laboratory data, EEG, ECG. 40% of patients return to their professional duty. In control group 60% of patients complained of headache, increase of blood pressure, drug load, long-range improvement. Mortality in the second group in 2 years was 8%.
CONCLUSIOÍS. Acupuncture is safe and effective method to cure consequence of BI. Our treatment as a link of social rehabilitation decrease disablement and mortality, improve prognosis and quality of life.

Laser therapy and immunostimulators in patients with acute orofacial infections

The acute orofacial infections often are therapeutical problem. The complex treatment of such patients include antimicrobial agents, surgical intervention, immunostimulation with Oxyrich and laser therapy.
Laser system "Six - L - IR" class IIIB, with active medium Ga As, l0w & ë - 904 nm was used. Two methods were applied: 1) distant, local with 100% power, 4000 Hz per 5 min and 400 Hz per 3 min and 2) laser punction for 60 sec in BAP V43, GI4, T14, E36 and point 55 of the ear.
Patients were treated for 10 days.
33 patients were tested for their phagocyte activity before and after the treatment. Nitro - blau - tetrazolium test (NBT) for enzymatic activity of the leucocytes was included also.
The antiinflammatory and biostimulating effect of the laser therapy is discussed.
These preliminary results emphasize the positive results from complex therapy including laser puncture and immunostimulators in patients with acute orofacial infections

The purpose of studies was the search of effective pathogenitically directed methods of acupuncture. The combined corporal-auricular reflexotherapy (CCART) has been used. The healing treatment has been performed on neurohormonal, immune and nerve-muscle systems.

Daily 5-6 CP and 2-3 AP as well as surfacial acupuncture MAY-KHUA-CHZHENG (MKC) have been used.
As a result of acupuncture the restoration of changed indices of immunity and the normalization of electroneuromiographic parameters have been observed along with positive clinical morbidity dynamics. The disturbances of hormonal homeostasis were found to have a more steady character that demands perfecting the acupuncture methods.

Thyroid functions in patients with primary deformative osteoarthrosis and laserotherapy treatment efficiency

We have observed 34 patients with primary deformative osteoarthrosis (PDOA). Thyroidtropic hormone(TTH) and thyroid gland hormone levels (T3 ,T4 ) were determined with radioimmunologic method in all patients before and after treatment.
Summary content of glycosaminoglycans (GIAG) and uranium acids (UA) in serum and urine were investigated simultaneously . The patients were observed in dynamics after 14-15 days treatment.
Laserotherapy was carried out with the help of "Usor" apparatus using the segmental and local points of acupuncture. 3-4 points were punctured during the sitting, the time of procedure being 12-15 minutes. The course of treatment consisted from 10-15 sittings. The results of investigation revealed that in females, suffering from (PDOA) the level of T3 (P<0,05) was reduced statistically.
T4 content was within control limits (P>0,05). (TTH) quantity increased in response to T3 reduction, i.e. reverse relationship in patients was preserved. The GAG and UA levels in peripheral blood and urine exceeded the findings in healthy patients (P<0,05, P<0,05, P<0,05, P<0,05).
Thus, in PDOA females with full clinical picture of the disease subclinical hypothyroid, with T3 level reduction was revealed. Laseropuncture with "Usor" apparatus proved to be effective not only regarding; clinical findings but also as a method of correction of the thyroid hormone level.

Laseropuncture and intravenous in complex treatment of systemic sclerodermy and their influence on thyroid findings

The influence of hormone level on the course of systemic sclerodermy (SSD) hasn't been studied sufficiently. It is known that this disease is 11 times as frequent in female patients than in male. Severe unfavourable course is marked in puberty or climax age. The development of pathologic process is often due to parturition or abortions. The condition of hypothalamus and hypophysial adrenal systems in SSD patients is studied in detail. There are findings of hormone changes contents especially estradiol and gonadotropins on disease course (Lepilina L.A., 1993). We haven’t met the findings about the condition of hypothalamus and hypophyso-thyroid glands systems. The aim of our investigation is to study thyroid findings (T3, T4, TTG) in SSD patients and to estimate the efficiency of complex treatment according to its dynamics. Throughout SSD complex therapy we have used nonsteroid inflammatory drugs, glycocorticoids 5-15 mg doses and laser treatment. According to the mathodics the patients were divided into 2 groups: the first group received laser therapy with the use of general, local and segmental acupuncture. HeNe laser «Alpha2» was used for treatment with power stream 1-2 mVt/sm2 at the outlet. The second group included patients with intravenous laserothorapy with "Aloo-1" apparatus, 5 sittings for an hour. The estimation of results demonstrated the reduction of the 1st group intensity (P 0,05) and frequency of Reino (P 0,05) syndrome attacks. The decreased T3 (P 0,05) level was not changed, TTG content reduced (P 0,05). In the second group we observed the reduction of frequency and Rein syndrome (P 0,05, P 0,5). Along side with positive dynamics of clinical findings statistically meaningful of T3 and TTG (P 0,05, p 0,05) content change was marked.

Laser puncture in the coniplex treatment of ankylosing spondylarthritis

Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) are the most important natural mucopolysaccharides. According to their level we can judge of the connective tissue basic substance state.
In ankylosing spondylarthritis (ASA) the tissue active metaplasia and ossification are pathogenetic links leading to the development and progression of the disease. Discoordination of intensiveness of destructive and reparative processes with progressing, connective structures disorganization occur.
Fifty patients with ASA were examined by us. All the patients underwent laser puncture (LP) therapy against the background of antiinflammatory processes.
The "Uzor" apparatus in the regiment of 80 Hz with an impulse capacity of 2-3 vt and exposure time of 15-18 minutes per a sitting was applied. Up to 8 biological active points was individual and traditional classical acupuncture laws were taken into consideration.
With large injured areas laser energy doses were increased. To prevent the disease complication the cousre was divided into several parts.
The recommended course was as follows:
The first 3 sittings were devoted to alleviation of painful sydromes. There was 3 day interval. The next 4 sittings were to relieve muscular tension with a 2 day interval. Then 5 LP sittings were carried out in vertebral areas, the most affected spinal sections. If the painful syndrome failed to reduce and there was no evidence of the spinal mobility increase, after 3-5 interval days a 4 day sitting according m Bu-se was carried out.
Our investigations have demonstrated the increase in GAG content correlating with the disease degree.
A tendency to normalization of the indices is evident after the LP course.

Electroacupuncture by Voll (EAV) and the syndrome of deposits of immunocomplexes in the locomotoric system

In last two years, particularly in patients after virus diseases, there is a rising number of patients with acute or chronic syndrome of pain in the spinal column and muscles. According to the French authors "Syndrome polyantalgique idiopatique diffuse".
In all of these forms of disorder we can find a casual link to the occurrence of reduced function of the immunity system and also to the reduced detoxication ability of the organism which is mediated by the liver, spleen and kidneys.
A long-term storage of immunocomplexes (IMC) in tissues has been observed in connection with these disorders, especially in so-called immunologically privileged places with a difficult access for immunocompetent cells, such as vascular walls, binding tissues, musculature of subcutis and synovia of joints.
Electrodiagnostical measurements taken using the Voll method proved, without any doubt, pathological changes in the liver, spleen and kidneys. Moreover, in the case of chronic disorders, pathological changes were detected also in joints and tissues. To a statistically significant degree, the results of EAV measurements corresponded with the results of blood crystallisation analyses, as well as immunological and virological examinations. In particular, the presence of herpetic viri, EB viri, has been proved.
The use of the easily accessible EAV method enabled us not only to prove, objectively and quickly, the causes (origins) of pathological occurrences in the motoric system (hereinafter MS), but also to monitor changes occurring in the course of our research.
Progressive growth of immunity system disorders has led to the development of a new nosological unit, the SY DEPOSIT IMC, in the motoric system.
Best results were noted with the use of a method called Specific Individual Autobiotherapy (SIAB), either in combination with the application of manual lymphatic drainage, or by stimulating the acupressure points in the respective anatomical, localities of the lymphatic system, or in accordance with EAV measurements taken on individual patients.

Progressive growth of immunity system disorders has led to the development of a new nosological unit, the SY DEPOSIT IMC, in the motoric system.

Emap-therapy used in treatment of X-ray-induced cancer complications

The aim of the study is to investigate the possibilities of EMAP-therapy in treating X-ray-induced complications occurring to cancer patients.
Method: The patients were 11 women aged 38 - 70 diagnosed with cervical cancer (4 patients), vaginal wall cancer (6 patients), liposarcoma of the pelvic bottom ( 1 patient). Treatment was administered once a day during a period of 10 days. Acupoints Neiguan (PC6), Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Guanyuan (CV4), Zhongwan (CVl2), Liangqiu (ST34), Yinlingquan (SP9) and Yanglingquan (GB34) were treated as suggested (in 1996 by Dr. Yeh Chong Chan, Maryland Acupuncture clinic, USA). The treatment exposure of one acupoint did not exceed 3 minutes. The treatment was supported by phytonutrients, the following data were registered: the blood cell content, the lipid oxidation, the antioxidant activity, hair and nail microelement content.
Results: After 2 - 3 treatment sessions 8 women suffering from X-ray- induced vaginal and vulval mucosa impairment experienced a considerable decrease in pain; after 10 treatment sessions the epithelium recovery was registered. The control group not exposed to EMAP treatment, experienced the epithelium recovery during 1,5-2 months with a severe pain syndrome persisting. After 2 treatment sessions 2 patients experienced the loss of the incontinence symptom which had been caused by the X-ray therapy and had been persistent during 5 - 8 months.
Conclusion: The results obtained testify to the efficacy of EMAP- therapy in treating the effects of X-ray therapy (the pain syndrome and the mucosa impairment), both immediate and long-term.

Acupuncture use to support extubation on laryngotracheitic children

Aim: Stenotic laringotracheites with children under 3 are a common pathology that, given pulmonary insufficiency, requires intensive care. When drug therapy proves inefficient, trachea intubation is used for the term of 2 or 3 days to restore respiration and to ensure conservative treatment, which is less harmful than tracheotomy. However, certain patients have to undergo lasting intubation, which, given the specifics of the pathological process characteristic of those patients, may lead to pulmonary insufficiency during the extubation procedure. Due to insufficient efficacy of modern methods used to discontinue long-term intubation, we have developed, on the basis of Chinese original sources, acupupressure techniques to be employed during extubafion.
Method: Patients were administered treatment according to modern standards used in intensive care units. In the period between 1994 - 1997 there have been 7 cases of prolonged intubation that lasted 10 - 26 days involving 6 children, age 3 months - 18 months. Diagnosis and treatment were based on the system of "childrens" acupuncture points, the follow-up assessment included monitoring kinesthetic changes in the acupoints Tiantu, Xinjiang, Feijin, Shenshui. Acupressure procedures started 3 - 5 minutes before extubation and to continue for 1,5 - 4 hours after the tube removal, depending on the absence of the tendency for the pulmonary insufficiency to increase. In 3 cases extubation was successful in the first attempt, 4 cases required a repeated procedure after 2 - 3 days.
Results: The general efficacy of acupressure employed during extubation in the cases described was 100%. 4 children did not show any recidivation during the follow-up; in one case a 3-month-old patient suffered a regression after 6 month, which required a repeated intubation accompanied by acupressure techniques; 1 child suffers from recidivations 2 - 3 times a year, which are resolved without intubation use.
Conclusion: The developed acupressure techniques for children exposed to prolonged intubation due to acute laringotracheitis allows the respiration function to be restored and stabilized without surgical correction in complicated cases. Treating specific "childrens" acupoints increases the effectiveness of the treatment process.

Low energy laser in the treatment of low back pain

Low back pain is felt in the low lumbar, lumbosacral, or sacroiliac region. Most low back pain is related to acute ligamentous (sprain) or muscular (strain) problems, which tend to be self limited, or to the more chronic osteoarthritis or ankylosing spondylitis of the lumbar area.
The aim of the study was to explore the pain-alleviating effect of low energy laser in low back pain .Thirty-five patients with low back pain have been treated with helium-neon laser type "Bistra" with wavelength 630 nm, average output 15 mW and an irradiance of 250 mW/cm2. The laser was locally applied to 11 sites on and around the low back. After scanning each point was treated for 30 sec, five times weekly for a total of ten treatments. The statistical analysis showed that the laser treated patients had a significant faster pain-alleviating effect compared with the 30 patients treated with medicaments only. Subjective response have been achieved after first three treatments. Irradia laser treatment may be a valuable therapy in low back pain and low energy laser can be employed as a pain relieving method.

Forming a strong excitation centre which is characterized by the varying degree of intensity of the excitation zone causes the formation of stable or less stable interoceptive and conditioned reflex bonds. The general biological reactions are the basis of forming systemic levels of regulation which provide the integral functioning of human body. The generalized visceral dysfunctions are caused both by factors of psychogenic nature and by tonic effects resulted from physical traumatism. The above said allows to form an opinion about locking self-regulated reactions at various levels of the nervous systen which desorganize human body functioning. Acupuncture and manual therapy when used in combination allow to form a highly specialized patterns which provide harmonising the systemic regulation and restoration of psychosomatic health. The paper presents the results of treating 61 diseased persons with infectious - and - allergic bronchial asthma in acute condition, including 36 patients with light course of the disease and 35 patients with the disease of medium severity. The improvement was noted in 57 patients (93,4%) and manifested itself by ceasing attacks of asphyxia in all the patients with light course of the disease and in 31 patients (88,6X) with the disease of medium severity. The systemic analyzing of the connection of biologically active points of skin with zones of low-differentiated tonic effects is the basis of the complex therapeutic action-

Applied oftalmologic stimulators were: "PHOSPHEN" of Institute of Filatov (Odessa), "ESO-2" of Institute of neurokibernetics (Rostov on Don) for electrophotostimulation (20 min) & apparatus "H 110" of MEGATEX (Sofia) for magnitostimulation (15 min). After acupressure of points, A. was carried out in the local & local-segmentary points, "regular points" & "extra points" during 10-15 min., following from microacupuncture zones (ear, hand, foot ) . The course included 10 procedures. Visual acuity of diopters were measured. The therapeutic effect on the treatment of myopia was 91.79% (complete healing - 7,46%); hypermetropia 86.66% (complete healing - 46.66%); complicated hypermetropia 91.02% (complete healing - 4,41%. In conclusion E.PH.M. in combination with A. Is high effective, without complications method for treatment of myopia and hypermetropia.

The essence of this method is the following. The certain acupuncture points are punctured with metal needles and then connected with apparatus, which produces fluctuation current. The present scientific work was divided into three stages: morphological, electrophysiological and clinical. All the received results have undergone the statistical control. In the result of morphological investigations the optimal. uncausing morphological changes in soft tissue and nerves parametras of application of fluctuation current, were defined. It became the basis of the next investigations. The results of the physiological investigations show, that the simultaneous application of acupuncture and fluctuation current on the condition of periferical nervous system (changes the sensitivity of the skin and the amplitude of the action potential).
The clinical stage of the work was provided on the patients with lumbosacral radiculitis with hemilesio L5-S1 . The goal of this work was the establishing of an opportunity of particular change of an acupuncture meridians' (AM) state with the help of SU JOK therapy. RL-test, a new method of meridians' state electropuncture research was applied for the AM state valuation. It is highly significant and doesn't depend upon the subjective factors. A diagram is developed for the analysis of AM relations. A scale of a skin electrical conductivity's calculated parameter (CE) with the norm limits from 0.85 to 1.15 is submitted on a vertical axis. The AM according to the Creative Cycle (Sheng) of the Five element theory are located on the horizontal axis. The top row of a meridians designation concerns to the YANG system, the bottom - to the YIN one ( French indexation). The meridians of the right (R) and left (L) part of a body are shown separately. That permits to investigate them independently. As an extensive material analysis shows the needles and special SU JOK therapy magnets application according the 6-QI technique (Park Jae Woo, 1995) particularly changes the state of a patient and his rneridians. The diagrams of a 60 years old woman with the complaints on strong dizziness are submitted as an example. The left meridians' (L) diagram analysis make it possible to think that it is the Law of Subordination that shows itself in a chain of V, R - IG, C - GI, P relations. The left part : AM's bias correction was conducted under the SU JOK therapy technique. For this purpose the 1 hour magnet TONIK of MULADHARA zone of chakra conformity on left-hand palm was conducted. A day after correction the redundant activity in V and R meridians relating to the influenced chakra had decreased. Further according to the Law of Subordination there was the increase in IG (Thin intestines) and the decrease in GI (Thick intestines). The dizziness had disappeared and did not arise hereinafter.

A large data material permits us to make a conclusion., that the Law of Subordination almost everywhere take place in the meridians' relations according to which one of the meridian is suppressed or activated by another that is located every one in Creative Cycle. A diagram of a 49 years old man with kidney- stone illness, hypertension of a 2-nd stage and costal chondritis diagnosis is submitted on Fig. 2 as one of many examples. On the left-hand diagrams (L) YIN's curve (thin lines) differs from the sawtooth form of a YANG's one (thick lines). We consider it to be a phenomena of the Subordination Law according to which the increasing of Kidneys meridian's (R) activity suppresses the Heart meridian's (C) state. That in its turn increase the Lung meridian's (P) activity. The same type of AM relations was revealed also at other patients with the same diagnosis. It is confirmed by clinical supervision on high heart dependence on the kidneys' state at the patients with given diagnosis.

RL-TEST: A new method of acupuncture diagnostics

The goal of the current work was to create a correct express acupuncture meridians' (AM) state research method with probably smaller measurement's errorlevel and minimum dependence on the subjective factors. The electropuncture RL-test creation was a result of the conducted work. The new method is based on skin's electrical conductivity in certain zones of 12 main AM research. It includes some new principles. The testing procedure takes not more than 5-7 minutes. The special diagram enable to notify even slightly changes in the AM state was developed for visual analysis of the given measurements. In 1,5 year of the RL-test work during diagnostics and AM correction at more than 300 patients we have received an extensive material, allowing to make the following conclusions:
1. Meridians, state and their relations' character are significantly constant. They are stable against the customary environmental and internal factors' influence. At the same time they are very sensitive to the strong changes in the organism's state as well as to the particular acupuncture effects.
2. Meridians basically reflect the clinical status of a patient.
3. The appropriate meridians, state is particularly changed under the influence of classical and SU JOK acupuncture.
4. The particular acupuncture effect on the appropriate meridians' state change is usually found out at once after the procedure and is kept up to 2 or 3 weeks and longer.
5. The particular changes in the meridians' state are observed at moxa, laser, needles' acupuncture and special SU JOK therapy magnets actions.
6. The right and left-hand meridians are characterised by relative independence.
7 . In more than in 90% of cases the well known in acupuncture laws of Subordination and Creation are reflected in meridians' relations character.
8. The revealed RL-test opportunities permit to use it for valuation of meridians state as an objective tool express-method that is alternate to the traditional pulse diagnostics.

The influence of acupuncture on infradian rhythm of graving for alcohol in alcoholics at the remission stage

Acupuncture is one of the methods of treatment which influence on chronobiological rhythm of organism. Our preliminary data revealed that craving; for alcohol in alcoholics at the remission stage is not constant. At the graphe reactivity of ethanol-dependent system (REDS) is acurve, like "running wave" with parts of maximum and minimum REDS. There are five parts of maximum and five parts of minimum REDS at the curve.
So, the task of present research was comparative study of influence of acupuncture and pharmacotherapy on infradian rhythm of REDS in alcoholics at the remission stage (66 days). Three groups of patients were inspected. Group I (control, n=30) - without treatment; group II (n=18) - was treated with pharmacotherapy (benzodiazepin-like preparation); Group III (n=20) - was treated by means of acupuncture. Objective research - REG above right and left frontal regions of brain. It was made the comparative analysis of coefficient of interhemisphere asimmetry after functional sample with ethanol smell, in comparison with background exponents, in per cents (C.as.%).
Data, we've got. Pharmacothernpy didn't exert influence on infradian rhythm of REDS. Pharmacotherapy decreased sensitivity threshold of ethanol-dependent system (EDS) to alcohol irritants Acupuncture exerted triple influence on this reactivity: 1) From the first to 7th day of remission REDS lost its oscillatory character and REDS to ethanol smell lowered by lineal type; 2) At the 8th day of remission aversion of REDS happened: positive reaction of EDS changed for negative reaction of EDS to ethanol smell; 3) Displacement of curve of REDS to ethanol smell by phase towards "0" degree ("0" day) by 10 days happened.
So, we got the data that acupuncture exerted influence on infradtan rhythm of REDS to ethanol smell in patients with alcoholism at the remission stage.

Headache treated with magnets on the peroneal zone of the legs

Since Dec 5th 1994 I have treated and followed 10 successive patients, who told me that they had migraine or headache on one or both sides of the head. The magnets (diameter 5 mm, thickness 2,5 mm, 700-800 Gauss, north pole against the skin) were put usually by the patient self in average for 1-2 weeks onto the skin on the area of acupoint GB34 (Yanglingauan, on the peroneal area of the leg) for one or several courses
Five of them can be counted as drop-outs:
Three (3) because of insufficient relief: Both (2) patients with common migraine (women 49-55y) and one ( 1 ) man (79y) with bitemporal headache with visual aura.
One ( 1 ) man (84y) with headache with cluster-headache-like symptoms because the symptoms were so mild and rare (5-10 minutes once or twice a month).
One ( 1 ) woman with migraine with aura (30y) because of old skin allergy, although she got a lot of relief for 7 months. The effect was nearly totally lost 3 months later.
Now there are left 5 patients:
Three (3 ) patients with classical monotemporal headache with visual aura: one man (71y) and two women (52-66y), follow-up (mean) 24 months. Before treatment each of them had 2-4 attacks with migrenous headache in a month. Now during the last year: 2 of them (Pat. 3 and 5) have been symptomfree without magnets. One other patient (Pat. 1 ) has had visual aura 5 times. These prodromes were treated with skin magnets, caffeine or automassage and no headache followed.
One ( 1 ) man (88y) with everyday headache since 1986 with clusterheadche-type svmptoms on the right and duration of one hour got some relief during 7 months time of treatment. Then he got hemiparesis to the left with increased desorientation. Headache seems to be more mild until now. One ( 1 ) man, whose migraine was cured 3 years ago with acupuncture, got 3 visual prodromes (one of them until mild headache) in 1995, which were immediately treated with skin magnets and the symptoms settled within 30 minutes without progression.
This method is worth of more study in the treatment of migraine with aura.

Phantom pains of the legs respond to skin magnets on the thorax

Phantom pains of the legs of 10 patients were treated with skin magnnets on the thorax, on the ipsilateral cranial ends (points K.27, Liv.14 and Sp.21) of the Yin-meridians. which have their origin in the leg. Patients altogether received 24 a' 1-8 courses (mean 2,4, median 1 ) a' 1-26 (mean about 12 ) days. Follow-up from one day to 26 months (mean 11 months).
Results: Eight patients got relief during the treatment. The frequency and intensity of the attacks were reduced in five (+ possibly 2=7) cases after the treatment, too. In the two non-responders the segmental or other symptoms seemed to be more prominent than the phantom pains; one of these non- responders possibly only had pains of segmental origin. (The difference between phantom and segmental pain is discussed). The only two patients who needed morphine, experienced this method as being practically better to morphine.
Side effects: One patient with angina pectoris and amputation of the left leg got a little increase of the chest pain. Three patients had temporary irritation of the skin, consequently pauses of a few days were needed.

Low energy laser in the treatment of ulcus cruris

Ulcus cruris is a complication following deep vein incompetence and the terms "postphlebetic leg" or "stasis syndrome" are applied. The ulceration is usually small, superficial, and very painful because of exposure of nerve endings. Varicose veins may be seen or palpated close to or continuous with the ulcer. These ulcerations may start after minor trauma to an area of pigmentation, induration, eczema, or edema, and are usually chronic by the time they are seen.
The influence of low energy laser under the skin has been examined in large number of laboratory and clinical studies, considering that the skin is a big area for absorbing a great amount of photons.
The aim of the study was to explore the role of low energy laser in the treatment of slowly healing ulcus cruris. Ten patients with slowly healing ulcus cruris have been treated with helium-neon laser type "Bistra" with wavelength 630 nm, average output 15 mW and an irradiance of 250 mW/cm2. All patients have been previously treated with other therapeutic modalities for six months but without result. Complete healing was achieved in eight patients and two patients showed significant diminution of their lesions.
lrradia laser treatment may be a valuable therapy in dermatologic diseases, especially in slowly healing wounds.

In acupuncture the active places are called "points", "zones" or "microzones" till now. They are usually understood as superficial parts of the skin or mucous membranes. SCHNORRENBERGER (1996) has shown that the term "point" is only a wrong translation from the Chinese. According to the old Chinese authors, the active place is a three-dimensional space; the needle stimulates not only the surface of the active place, but also different sensors and other cells in the depth .Schnorrenberger proposed, for this reason, a new term for acupuncture points - the foramen. This term is already used in another sense - as a preformed opening usually in bones or fascia. The suitable term would be "area" introduced by BRODMANN for cortex cerebri. Area is not only a superficial part of the brain, but includes also the underlying structures, i.e. it represents a certain space. At present, of course, the generally used term is "point". We recommend therefore to understand the "point" as a three dimensional space extending from the surface to the depth and involving different sensors and modulative cells in the epidermis, dermis as well as in the tela subcutanea. The "active point" represents in this way the relatively greatest accumulation of sensors in the place given. We can imagine this space as a cylinder demonstrated on Fig.1-glabrous human skin. In the hairy skin-Fig.2-another important role has the sensory innervation of hairs besides other sensors and modulative cells. Fig.3 demonstrates all basic kinds of sensors in the skin, mucous membranes and other tissues and organs.

The majority of acupuncturists is interested in the regularity of interchanges of seasons of year and also in regularity of movements of celestial bodies, namely the Sun and the Moon. It is also known that daily circulation of energy in acupuncture meridians exists. There is also an analogy between twelve two-hours of a day and twelve months of a year. Thus the rotation of Nature and Man, who is but a part of it, runs like a clockwork in a continuous interchange of days seasons of year and periods of life. Any form of this rotational activity of Nature and Man has a wavelike pattern of oscillation between two forms of eternal Nature, where all depend on the relativity of relations.
In acupuncture treatment may be taken into account three kinds (biorhythms) of circulation of energy in meridians: i.e. the daily, monthly, and seasonal rhythm Disruption of daily circulation is of the least relevance, because it influences before all the Fu organs and the malfunctions in this regard have good reversibility. Disorder in the monthly biorhythm signifies problems hidden in the deeper layers of the tissue. Impairment of the seasonal biorhythm has a bearing upon diseases of the Yin or the Zang organs, also referred to as storage organs. Diseases of these organs have the most serious consequences. For all three kinds of biorhythms it is possible to find analogy in astrology, where the daily rhythm corresponds with the ascendant: monthly rhythm is being influenced by lunar phases and individual sings of horoscope. Seasonal biorhythm is then correlation with seasons of the year, as the Sun progresses through individual sings throughout the year respectively.
Application of knowledge of biorhythms contributes to better results of treatment not only in the field of acupuncture, but also in a broader field of complex therapy.

A new version of pulse diagnostic technique & EHF - puncture on the pulse point

Palpation of the radial artery pulse is one of the most important diagnostic method of rraditional Chinese medicine. They consider that all information about 12 Channels and Organs can be obtained bv palpation of the superficial and deep pulses at the Cunn, Guan and Chi positions. Usual technique of pulse diagnosis is based on the doctor's feelings. A new version of pulse diagnostic technique applies same relations between pulse points and Organs. But doctor monitors changing the patient's feelings during palpation of the pulse. For example, patient has headache and pain at the hypochondriac region: During palpation of the superficial and deep pulses at the Guan position on the left hand the aggravation of the symptoms is observed. It means, that there is Excess of the Element "Wood" including Excess of Liver and Gallbladder. If in this case pain is released by palpation of the deep pulse at the Cun position of the right hand, it means, that additionally there is Deficiency of the Lung. If pain is aggravated by palpation of the superficial pulse at the Guan position on the left hand, but released by palpation of the deep pulse at the same position, it means, that there is Excess of the Gallbladder and Deficiency of the Liver, etc. In other words, during palpation of the pulse point correlated to the Organ/Channel with the Excess, patient may have aggravation of the symptoms or changing his condition to worse. But if there is Deficiency of the correlated Organ/Channel, palpation of the certain pulse point is accompanied by release from the initial symptoms or changing patient's condition to be better. Changing the patient's condition during palpation of the pulse let one to conclude that pulse points belong to the diagnostic-curative micro-system like ear, nose, palm, etc. Extremely High Frequency (EHF) - Puncture is a new method of treatment which is based on different biological effects of low power (non-thermal) level electromagnetic radiation of millimeter band and acupuncture theory of TCM. It is non-invasive, painless and effective method to influence upon acupoints. One of the most important peculiarities of the EHF-Puncture is its possibility without needle manipulation to stimulate various kind of specific sensations (phenomenon De Oi) not at the place of influence, but at the place of Qi disorders. EHF-Puncture can be applied to treat different diseases by means of influence on the pulse points.
