THE "QI" ENERGY IS ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES
Adrian P. Adam - M.D. (Romania)
All processes existing at the level of the living matter and specially at the level of human body are being carried out by the intervention of an electromagnetic wave, which is identical with the QI ENERGY in Chinese medicine. Extrapolating to physics any living being is a "RECEIVER" and a "TRANSMITTER" of electromagnetic waves. In the Chinese Traditional Medicine. the human body can be compared to a magnet by extrapolation. The generalized equation, according to the time coefficient for the circadian cycle are:

H*cos (ω*t + T)

H = is a length of wave, calculated according to the formula:

H*cos (ω*t + T) = λ = 300*R*C = DIRECT WAVE [m]

where:

R = body general resistance (Kohm)

C = general capacity (nF)

ω = circadian pulsation which has the value of 360 gr. in 24 hours * ω pulsation beings at 3h0’ 0" clock in the morning, when its value is 0. The ω pulsation continues to increase with 30 gr. for each meridian.

t = is the circadian time and it begins at 3h0’ 0" clock in the morning and correspond to the beginning of the Lung meridian, where the human energetical circulation is initiated.

T = is the stage from the time origin, represents the number of days lived by each individual since his birth. The meridian is the biologic tuning for the length of the different waves of "QI ENERGY", which transmits the cosmic information to the body.

The calculation of cosinus, sinus, tangential and contangential series permits to demonstrate the values of the 4 types of waves that compound the "QI ENERGY"

DIRECTWAVE (I = m)

LIGHT (I = micro m)

NUCLEAR ENERGY (I = Ang.)

ANCESTRAL WAVE (I = Km)

The direct wave appears in the stratum E. Heaviside of the ionosphere. The intensity of the atmospheric electromagnetic fields is minim at 3h0’ 0" clock in the morning and corresponds to the shortest length of the direct wave. At this time, the Lung meridian has the maximum energetical activity and the energetic circulation begins with it (see Table I).

The wave length increases, reaching its maximum value at 15h0’ 0"clock, when it coincides with tile end of the meridian SMALL INTESTINE AND THE BEGINING OF THE MERIDlAN URINARY BLADDER. After l5h0’ 0" clock a decrease of the wave. Lengter observed for the meridians that follow the course of the energetical circulation reaching the minimum value at about 3h 0’0" clock, when the circuit is resumed (see table). The capacity of each meridian increases in the same rhythm. The frequence ( Hz ) is in on inverted rotation with the other parameters. It is maximum at 3h 0’0" clock, when the energetic cycle is initiated, getting down to the minimum level at 15h 0’0" clocks and then it goes back to the maximum value at about 3h 0’0" clock in the morning. Taking into consideration the inclination angle of the Earth axis, the seasonal, monthly and early values of the parameters mentioned above can be calculated.

We have carried out the measurements with a Digital meter RLC 0711 manufactured by IAEMI Bucharest. The measured parameters were: THE GENERAL RESISTANCE OF THE BODY AND THE GENERAL CAPACITY. From these parameters we have calculated for each hour and Chinese meridian (see table), the wave length (m), the frequency (kHz), the value in degrees (Ko) for each meridian and the capacity (nF). The measurement of these parameters permits the diagnose of the lack of energetical equilibrium and the discovery of the affected meridian by simply comparing the wave length or the measured capacity at a certain hour, with the theoretical value of the wave length corresponding to the respective moment. The wave length can be longer or shorter than the theoretical one, depending on the excess or the lack of energy.
ACUVISION - A NEW SOLUTION OF THE ACUPOINT VISUALIZATION
R. Avagyan - M.D., M.Teppone - M.D. (Russia)
Known methods and devices designed for detection and action upon the minimum resistance zones and acupoints are based on contact measurement of surface conductivity by a scanning electrode [Y. Nacatani, R. Volt, etc.]. These methods have the following disadvantages: existence of mechanical and electrical contact; positional errors of scanning electrode resulting in low accuracy of point localization; effect of subjective factors (electrode inclination, exerted pressure, etc.) on the measurement accuracy; interference of effects unrelated with the measured parameters (skin injuries, sweat, grease, temperature variations, etc.). To avoid all problems described above a new device for non-contact action upon the minimum - resistance points of human or animals body has been developed. It was reached by a method in which the initially grounded object is placed in electrostatic field created by a high -voltage corona discharge in air and stimulating luminescence of minimum-resistance points on the object sulfate.

The method thus provides an accurate localization of desired points. To enhance the points’ luminescence, the analyzed object must be covered by a thin dielectric layer (a paper. cotton fabric, polyester film, etc.). Electrostatic field intensity is the maximum field intensity of minimum skin resistance. Luminescence originates in the maximum field intensity points and reflects the functional state of the biological object.

The suggested diagnostic method allows to estimate the functional state of analyzed biological object using corporal (channel and out at channel) points as well as points of various micro - systems. The so digested method also may be applied for air - ion therapy as well as for electric puncture therapy. But this version of Electro - puncture is non - contact, by means of the corona discharge affects on the points having minimum electric resistance only and procedure duration is determined by luminescence time of affected points. One may apply it both in traditional Chinese medicine and its present modifications, including points selected by R.Voll, P.-J. Woo (Su Jok), Nogier (auriculotherapy), etc.
CHANGEABILITY OF BRONCHUS REACTIVITY AMONG BRONCHIAL ASTHMA PATIENTS IN ACUPUNCTURE METHODS APPLICATION
R. Alexandrova (Russia)
In 101 cases of bronchial asthma patients, we have applied an acupuncture treatment by using four groups of points: 1 of general effect; 2 lungs points, both canal and segmental; 3 digestive system corresponding points; 4 some combinations of above - mentioned groups.

Effectiveness of the one acupuncture procedure was estimated consecutively by SGaw dynamics scale after 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 2 hours. We defined the bronchial reactivity by bronchoprovocational inhalational testings with acetylcholine. Background the general, health improving as a result of acupuncture treatment, at the same time we have revealed increasing of bronchia permeability (according to SGaw), as well as decreasing, of bronchial hyperactivity while acetylcholine testings (p<0.03) among 86% of patients. We observed optimum effectiveness after application of the combination of points while each procedure. As well we have defined that effectiveness depends on the initial blood acetylcholine level and acetylcholine concentration in breathing out moisture condensate. We Have concluded that acupuncture influence mechanism depends on the initial conditions of the main functions systems, which are taking part in bronchial reactivity regulation.
THE PERSPECTIVES IN SYNDROMIC ESTIMATION OF BRONCHIAL ASTHMA PATIENTS CONDITION
R. Alexandrova, Halmurat Upur, D. Dubrovin, I. Gogol
300 bronchial asthma patients were examined. Separation of disease syndromic variants (wind and cold penetrate in Lungs, heat and sputum in Lungs, insufficiency of the Lungs energy, deficiency of the Spleen energy, allergy disbalance in Liver, energy disbalance and fire in Liver, insufficiency of the Kidney Yin, insufficiency of the Kidney Yang) permitted us to individualize the treatment methods (diet, acupuncture, phytotherapy). Side effects of the one year medicamentous therapy were accompanied by development of pathologic syndromes internal heat, insufficiency of Yin while corticosteroids peroral application, internal cold, insufficiency of Yang after antibiotic course treatment deficiency of Heart energy and Yin while sympathomimetics prolonged therapy. We revealed the connections between Chinese diagnostic syndromes and objective indications of patients condition. The classical Chinese medicine complex of methods application increases the treatment effectiveness (p < 0.05) and decreases the prolonged medicamentous treatment side effect (p < 0.01 ).
"PREMEDICATION" IN THE TREATMENT OF HIPBONE PROBLEMS
R. Bortkiavichiyus - M.D. (Lithuania)
All of us we know, that building of the house starts from foundation. The foundation must be well planed, correctly and strongly built. Afterwards we build walls, supports, etc., from time to time we make repairs. In case that foundation is bad, we would need repairing very often, which will be not very effective, expensive and of low quality. The same analogy can be found in the human body. Hipbones, pelvis are the foundation, which gives support to our vertebral column. For that reason, before treatment (cosmetic repair), we must check in what conditions the foundation is. In case of any disease we should look for the person as the whole. It’s nothing new. Hipocrate said “We should treat the patient, but not the illness”. The teacher of Hipbone Yumeiho therapy Masayuki Saionji affirms the same. But in reality we not behaving like that. Injury of any organ or system has the influence upon functioning of other organs and systems. It means, that to clear the symptoms it’s not enough, we must correct all body systems. Probably you are not limping? Have a look at the soles of your shoes and you will see, that they are worn off different- right and left. It happens because hipbones are dislocated and legs are of different length. Don’t worry, only one person from 1000 has both legs of the same length. What symptoms it can produce?

You have to remember that the left body side corresponds to YANG and the right - to IN and accordingly sympatic nervous system - more YANG, parasympatic - more IN. For example, if we have “hipbone dislocation to the right”, which usually depends from abnormal situation of right pelvis, there will be difficulties of blood circulation in the right leg, tension of muscles and pain. The circulation of energy through meridians it will be affected (fig. 1)
Picture
Patients usually are complaining of stomach and intestines disorders, diarrhea, loss of the weight, women suffer from gynecologycal diseases. In case of “hipbones dislocation to the left” patients have heart and lung problems, they are prone to catch cold easily. Another, very important aspect are that in the zone of hipbones men, at the base of vertebral column, behind genitals above anus and women between ovaries have Muladhara chakra. This is the phisiological center of the motion organs. Another name for this chakra is the survival chakra, and is related with mechanism, responsible for body’s physical life, gives energetic and psychologycal stability, the storage center of the flowing Cosmic energy. It has concealed very strong Kundalini energy and its function gives the possibility to reach the higher energetic level, body is capable to realize creative forces, all the potency (fig. 2)
Picture
We have to mention the vertebral column and paravertebral points so called the meridians of urinary bladder (B). It’s the longest meridian, according to the U-SIN (fig. 3),
Picture
it’s “water”, which belongs to the group of great-est YANG meridians, has 67 points, some of them are ‘‘lucky’ points and are of special interest. Every organ has corresponding point. They goes from Th1 till sacrum. They are very important in acupuncture, treating chronic illnesses, spastic conditions, increasing or decreasing the tonus of this point.
Picture
Good and correct energetic circulation through chakras and meridians is essential for good health. This circulation usually is affected by bad geometry of the body.

That is why it’s necessary to think about prophylaxis and “premeditation” of diseases. I hope, it will be an interesting start for discussion and I’m looking forward to hear the opinion of like - minded and the opposition, constructive critics. We have plan to write about some aspects of our nutrition, detoxication ate.
HIPBONE AND YUMEIHO THERAPY
R. Bortkiavichius - M.D. (Lithuania)
We are compelled to live in modern, highly - civilized society. We are also developing stress, and suffer shortage of exercise, and irritation like captive animals.

The possibility is very high that even people who think they have nothing to worry about concerning their health, and really enjoy good health, may have displaced hipbones. Surprisingly enough, regularly-formed hipbones are found in only one or less then one person out of every 1000 people. Most people have 1 or 2 centimeters of displacement in their hipbones. (Hips are literally the pivotal part of the body.)

Each part of human body, it lacking exercise, must obey the laws of nature. Otherwise it will weaken, degenerate and lower its functions, resulting in various diseases.

When hipbone displacements occur, what must be done'.' Nothing but correct the displaced hipbone and recover the balance of oae's whole bone framework and muscles. The Natural Yumeiho Therapy, or Hipbone Yumeiho Therapy is a secret that brings displaced hipbones back to normal, revives the life force inherent in mankind, and then heals illnesses. It is a cause therapy. It differs from the symptomatic treatment that deals only with symptoms of diseases. However, diseases arise from imbalances in the body. It is more important than anything else to reinvigorate the natural healing power (life force) that strives to correct the imbalances. This eventually heals the diseases.

More precisely, the Hipbone Yumeiho Therapy is a remedy consisting of the Corrective Method and the Kneading Method. They are aimed principally at correcting the displacement in the whole bone framework, including the hipbones, Articulatio Coxae and the Vertebrae, by removing tension or stiffness in the whole muscles and their connective tissues so that they are softened to allow the joints to expend the fullest extent.

Diseases arise from imbalance in the body. Human body has a natural function that strives to correct the imbalance, and this is the self-healing power, or life force. This power, once lost, will make it impossible for a man to contain his disease, allowing symptoms like pains to surface. It becomes very important for him to bolster his reduced self-healing power somehow.

The Hipbone Yumeiho Therapy is the way to reawaken such power and improve its voltage, which leads to curing disease.

ACUPUNCTURE OF XXI CENTURY - A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH: LAWS AND NOTIONS.
A. Valevi - M.D. (Israel)
Acupuncture is becoming the science of high level, it has exact logic laws and conclusions. On the basis of Acupuncture one can explain all laws of medicine, which are aimed at the cognition of human being. The above mentioned statements are based, on the theory of Prof. Mussat. It has taken more than 20 years to create and approve this theory. Acupuncture is the science that explains the human's reception of information from environment and their interrelation. This conception may be expressed with the help of three notions: Energy - Structure (matter) and Evolution (Mussat - 1991). None of these notions is a static one, for any change represents a motion. The notion of the conjugated change of these components is Time. It is reflected in a certain appropriateness, and expressed in a circle diagram, showing 8 trigrams, expressed with the help of binary code, with possible combinations of the changes of these three notions (graph N1 Mussat 1991). There is the only possible order of motion and dynamic correlation between energy, structure and evolution. Thus, the method of explanation of coding and graphic expression of the information changes of these notions had to be found. If we know the correlation of these elements, we can control the system of human organism with the help of resonance feedback, that is acupuncture allows us to make the energoinformatic correlation according to the principles of symmetry and complementarily between live system and external information environment. There are following fundamental laws of acupuncture: alternation, transformation, transfer of condition, contrary and inversed. The implementation of these laws and notions is not limited with pure theory but is the basement for clinical application of acupuncture in the forthcoming century.
MM-WAVE PUNCTURE AND PHYTOTHERAPY MODALITIES IN GASTROENTEROLOGY
X. Garalevicius, T. Anbinderis, P. Karvelis (Lithuania)
The presented poster contains some aspects of the application of mm-wave puncture and traditional phytotherapy in different modalities taking into account individual characteristic of patient, nature of disease, tolerance of treatment. There are presented the data of the investigation of 250 patients with different digestive diseases. The results of the treatment showed, that the significant reduction of pathological symptoms and features was obtained by specific modalities of multiresonance therapy in form of low intensity millimeter band electromagnetic radiation action on acupuncture points. Additional prescription of special medical herb mixtures also improved the efficacy of the treatment.
APPLICATION OF ACUPUNCTURE AND ELECTROPUNCTURE IN CANCER PATIENTS
N. Zubova (Russia)
The use of acupuncture and electropuncture to cure different groups of cancer patients has been started since 1977. 370 patients were treated and remote results were under follow-up. The methods were used in the following cases:
  • Patients with progressive cancer disease.
  • Patients with late radiation injury (after radiation and combined treatments)
  • Patients after radical operation of cancer.

Clinical and laboratory results enabled to make a conclusion on the influence of acupuncture and electropuncture on: degree of analgesia; recovery of sensitive and locomotive disorders of the neurologic system; correction of disturbance of vascular-thrombocytosis link; improvement of life quality On the basis of these observations one should draw a conclusion that acupuncture and electropuncture effect strongly. These methods do not result in reduction of life expectancy in the compared groups of cancer patients.
RECURRENT INHIBITION OF NOCICEPTIVE SLOW IN THE ACUPUNCTURE OF MYOGENIC TRIGGER POINTS.
G. Ivanitchev - Ph.D., M.D. (Russia)
Objectives. Studies of interaction of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in the treatment of algesic myofascial syndroms by acupuncture.

Methods. 30 patients with myofascial algesic syndrome (MAS) of m. brachioradialis were investigated. MAS was characterised by palpable taut band in proximal part of m. brachioradialis and trigger pain in elbow joint. The neurophysiological complex "Key-point" (Denmark) was used. SEPs were registered using standard method of stimulation n. medianus in the region of wrist on the side of algesic syndrome and on the contralateral side before and after the acupuncture in 4 GI point and in zone of trigger phenomena (local points).

Results. SEPs in exacerbation were characterised by assymetrical responses during stimulation of "health" and affected sides. For the most part the amplitude of early components of SEPs was higher during the stimulation on the side of algesic syndrome. The differences in cortex components (N20 and P27) between SEPs of the "health" and affected sides were not determined. On the side of the MAS the increase of the amplitude of the SEPs in C7 level and N 13 of two phases were registered. After acupuncture treatment by reducing method the increase of latencies of SEPs in Erb point and in C7 level (N9 and N13) with simultaneosly decrease of the amplitude of the both SEPs were revealed.

Conclusions. The increase of amplitude and latencies of SEP's components before treatment may be considered as hyperexcitability and hypersynchronization in activity of neurons responsive to somatosensory stimuls. Normalization of this data is consequence of afferent interaction on different levels of central nervous system, first of all in unspecific systems of brain stem.
AN INNOVATION TO THE METHOD OF EAV-DIAGNOSTICS BY R. VOLL
A. Katin, M. Katina (Byelorussia)

1
The aim of the innovation is a physiological correction of BAPs. Diagnosing and treating diseases and conditions preceding a disease is directed to corrections of Yin- conditions of BAPs. These conditions correspond to: a) indications lower ' than 50 units taken from BAPs on electropunctural devices with a scale graduated in 100 increments; b) BAPs indications with an indication drop (ID) higher than 10 units. The indication drop higher than 10 units speaks about a moderate process of degeneration. Treating BAPs with indications lower than 50 units as well as BAPs with an ID higher than 10 units results in normalizing Yang-conditions. The method of electropunctural diagnostics by R. Voll serves as a basis for conducting topical diagnostics and treating diseases by means of electroacupuncture. A normal condition according to R. Voll makes 50 - 65 units of a quadrantal scale graduated in 100 increments. Figures lower than 50 speak about a trend towards degenerative processes, figures higher than 65 units witness an inflammatory process or a toxic aggravation in an organ or system. Modern approaches to the Voll - method are directed to correcting BAPs lower than 50 and higher than 65 units, since a point should be balanced up to 50 units. A practical goal of the Voll - method both in a medicamentary testing and in an electropunctural therapy is to balance the indications up to 50 units. Thus when treating patients with BAP indications deviated towards hypo- or hyperfunctions it is desirable to normalize points with decreased readings.

Distinctive features of the Innovated method are as follows:

Treated are BAPs (and the corresponding organs) only with indications lower than 50 units or with an ID higher than 10 units.

Numeral values of a Yin-pathology are, to our mind, insignificant for determining a degeneration stage according to classical Voll's approaches, since indications of 40 units, for example, may be taken from BAPs in case of an ontological disease, whereas indications of 20 units may witness an energetic predisposition to a pathology. More important is the value of an ID (indication drop), especially when it is higher than 10 units, e.g. indications taken from a BAP drop from 90 till 30 units (the ID makes 60 units).
2
A primary Yin - indications are of great importance for a patient. They serve as a reference point to estimate the dynamics of the disease and the corresponding therapy.

The most essential in the EAV-diagnostics is to our mind, to reveal Yin - conditions and to determine the main ones, i.e. those with a maximum ID and the lowest readings of BAPs which represent a pathology of the first collector. Then it follows a diagnostic testing with nosodes in order to establish a diagnosis, to define histological processes in tissues (or to define a stage of the process) and to identify the aetiology of the disease (bacterial or viral nosodes, etc.)

Further clinical investigation is based on results obtained by the EAV-diagnostics.

The EAV-diagnostics as a method is based on teachings of traditional Chinese medicine. The most important of them is the teaching of Yin - Yang. According to the teaching the Yin-processes always correspond to more severe pathologic conditions. No wonder that all 8 new meridians discovered by R. Voll in 1956 are Yin - meridians, e.g. meridians of degeneration which carry information about a severe pathology. The innovated method implies correction of a Yin - pathology alone and in this way the BAPs with indications higher than 65 units are balanced. Such an approach agrees with the latest trends of European medicine. According to these trends a therapy should not depress symptoms of a disease as it is characteristic of classical medicine. The symptoms are to be maintained and rendered harmless by means of removing toxins out of the organism, since any symptoms represent an attempt of the organism to remove interlocks in a dynamic system and to restore vitality.

A therapy directed to supporting of the organism excludes depression of high indications taken from BAPs. The idea of maintaining symptoms speaks about the necessity of stimulating low indications taken from BAPs, e.g. stimulating of Yin conditions. Of the corresponding organs by means of homoeopathy, homeotoxicology, bioenergetics, acupuncture, physio- and phytotherapy, etc. Taking into account the aforesaid I assess high indications taken from BAPs (65 units and higher) as a natural process, as a reaction of the organism striving to rid itself from a Yin - factor. High indications taken from BAPs in the EAV-diagnostics make more active the reactions of the organism directed to combating degenerative Yin conditions at preclinical stages or during a disease. These reactions must not be depressed.
ELECTROPUNCTURAL DIAGNOSIS BY Y. NACATANI AS SCREENING-METHOD OF VEGETATIVE DYSTONY
M. I. Korechkina - M.D., Ph.D. (Russia)
We've done the electropunctural diagnosis by Y.Nacatani of 40 patients with vegetative dystony and 55 healthy people. The research was done in 24 points (one point on each channel, left and right). We investigated the electroconduction of acupunctural channels as a reflection of their function. The patients with vegetative dystony had the specific diagram of the electroconduction. The healthy people had the "normal" diagram. The electropunctural diagnosis according to Y.Nacatani helps to early reveal this pathology, especially within the screening investigation.
THE CONNECTION BETWEEN AURICULAR AND PULSE DIAGNOSTICS
Angel Kayadgiev - M.D. (Bulgaria)
The prima vista diagnostics of functional and organic disbalance through the changes of AP points on the cochlea has proved to be an interesting and useful technique. Long before the first symptoms of the disease and immediately after that, painful points can be observed on the front relief point of the ear while with chronic condition some areas may redden or be covered with scales, blisters, ulcers, etc. This fact was well-known 30 years ago when P. Nogier wrote: "The changes in the projection zones long before the clinical manifestation of the disease can help predict the coming danger."

The diagnosis I would like to draw your attention to is different - less known but more rapid and effective. It uses not the front but the back surface of the cochlea and it is also visual and palpatory, the difference being that it is not based on AP points but on blood vessels. The presence or absence of blood vessels on the back surface of the ear, their caliber, and route can show which organ has been damaged as well as the stage of the process-chronic, subchronic, acute. These diagnostics are very similar to the diagnostics San Dzyan (three cavities in the body) and pulse diagnostics. Like the latter, it takes into account the blood vessels and that is why they can be successfully applied in combination. While the ear diagnostics are directed organo-topi-cally, pulse diagnostics shows and evaluates mainly the functional activities of the organs and systems, their condition at a given time from the point of view of vegetative indices tone, vegetative protection.
ACUPUNCTURE IN REHABILITATION AND HERIARTRIA
A. Kreinin-Simonov - M.D. (Israel)
Natural equilibrium Yin-Yang which is an intrinsic for younger is decreased usually at age 45 -50 years, especially in modern world, which pushes to use chemical drugs of traditional medicine for rapid recovery in spite of the hazardous side effects created by such medicine.

Other common reason for decreasing of the natural equilibrium Yin - Yang is as a consequence of hard surgerie often accompanied by chemical or radiation influences. The main goal of the present study was to develop the effective method for recover both an older person and patients after hard surgery.

A group of patients in age range from 45 to 88 was used for this research. Additional group consisted of patients after serious operations on stomach and uric tracts with subsequent chemotherapy and radiation influence. Acupuncture, aromatherapy, Chinese point massage TWINA and Herb's were the main methods of the treatment. Chinese pulse diagnosis together with such methods of the traditional medicine as blood pressure and clinic analysis of the blood and urine and some instrument methods as EKG, US, CT, Doppler and gastroscopy were used as a test methods for evaluation of the effect of treatment.

The investigation performed indicated that used combination of acupuncture, massage, herb and aromatherapy is effective in process of rehabilitation after serious operations even for patients older than 80 years.

Long term investigation performed showed that developed course of acupuncture influence in combinations with Herb's (and with aromatherapy, in certain cases) and carrying out of a minor diet requirements will lead to considerable increasing of active life of the older in case of a monthly performing of 2-3 time supporting acupuncture treatment.
SENSORY NERVE FORMATIONS - THE MAIN PERIPHERAL STRUCTURES ENABLING THE MECHANISMS OF ACUPUNCTURE ACTION
L. Malinovsky, R. Umlaut, C. Cavallotti, V. Malinovska, V. D'Andrea (Czech Republic; Italy)
The expression of contemporary biocybernetic approach to health, illness and acupuncture treatment should be defined mosphologically, physiologically, biochemically, psychologically, and sociologically.

From the morphological stand at view

a) the s.c. acupuncture "points" are three-dimensional spaces with main effective structures;

b) the active acupuncture areas are represented by greater accumulation of sensors in the place given. The definition of sensory name formations (structures, "endings"), their localization and classification (in 3 classes) are mentioned. They are very important for aimed starting of the non - nociceptive afferent excitation activity (from the area given), for provoking the "De-qui" -feeling and for achieving the optimal acupuncture therapeutical effects.
NONINVASIVE MAGNETIC TRAP USED IN PEACE AND WAR.
Dusanka Mandic, M.D., Ph.D. (Yugoslavia)
Over the last six years about 200 patients were treated with magnetic trap. The emergent method was patented in Yugoslavia (PR P566/95) and honored laureate by WIPO - UN. Inpatients and outpatients were treated in the period from 1992 to 1998 and that 82% with post war injuries, 2.8% of the latter from World War II, 5.6% occupational injuries, 3.7% household injuries, 0.9% sport injuries and 7.5% inadvertent gunshot injuries. Both modern and traditional medical procedures were used with the outcome of 62% patients with foreign bodies removed or displaced from their bodies, in the period from 5 - 90 days 64 persons (77.1%); 91 - l20 days 12 persons (14.4%); 121-250 days 5 persons (6%) and 251-365 /12 months 2 persons (2.4%). Respectively 83 persons were treated in total. The efficiency of the method was approved with 62 percent successfully displaced or evacuated foreign ferrous bodies in the period of up to 12 months. Complications or side effects were not. recorded for the period of 6 years.
HOLISTIC MEDICINE - THE NEED OF THE HOUR.
N. Nickolaev - M.D., Ph.D. (Latvia)
According to an Arabian proverb, “Where there is health, there is hope, and where there is hope, there is everything.” Hence, good health should be the highest priority but researches imply that health is pushed to a secondary position on several occasions. Although many people know that the specific behavior is hazardous to health yet they indulge in it. They prefer to be sick rather than controlling the behavior. Some significant examples are smoking, alcoholism and sexually transmitted diseases. There is an urgent need to place health on the higher priority.

John Last (1987) defines health as a state of equilibrium between humans and the physical, biological and social environment. He further adds that we can never be described as healthy so long as our actions whether deliberate or unwitting, continue to damage other humans or fragile ecosystems with which we are interdependent.

Richard Hetzel, the President of Whole Health Institute, Australia, in his definition of health includes positive, peaceful, caring attitudes expressed towards ourselves and towards the people and circumstances around us.

The changing definition of health also calls for the transformation of approach in the treatment offered to the patients, as Richard Hetzel puts: “In considering the philosophy and principles, understanding the practice of medicine, I will first of all define medicine as the art and science of the prevention and treatment of the disease”.

The complete health care infra -structure organization and training needs transformation for meeting the objective of health for all by 2000 A.D. as laid down by W.H.O.. Disease care is to be replaced by primary health care which is substantially economical too.

Certainly, there are remarkable achievements in some dimensions of health. As compared to year the 1947 there is almost 42% reduction in crude death rate in Latvia. On other parameters of Health too we have reached our goals. 1t has been shown that the change in the scenario is due to the better living conditions and availability of some resources like safe drinking water and not due to the change in human behavior. In fact, during last several decades diseases related to lifestyles and stress -induced diseases have reached to an epidemic proportion. There is a relative and absolute increase in many diseases. The high blood pressure, coronary artery diseases, arthritis, obesity and all types of psychological diseases which also include violence, child abuse, etc. to name a few. Medical scientists, government and nongovernmental organizations should focus their attention on controlling these factors. Parallel to the advancement in medical science doctors have become more and more mechanical and stereotype in treating the patients. They deal with a patient as if they are treating a robot. As they depend increasingly on sophisticated diagnostic tests and specialized knowledge, patients tend to loose their identity as human beings. In this modern era the conviction was rapidly spreading that disease is just like a fault in the machine and that the doctor’s job is to just repair the fault.

In the near future a day may come when a patient suffering from some problem in the right nostril will be refused treatment because the super specialist would be a doctor of the left nostril. Late Dr. Michael Balient an internationally renowned psychoanalyst described the value of doctor’s personality in his book, “The Doctor, His Patient and The Illness” in the following words: “By far the most frequently used medicine in medical practice was the doctor himself. It was not only the bottle of medicine or the box of pills that mattered, but the way the doctor gave them to the patients. Infact, the whole atmosphere in which the drug was given and taken.” Fortunately, in the last couple of decades it has been felt that patients need to be treated as a whole. Emotions, personality, life-style, behavior, etc. plays a very important role in causing the disease and hence there is a need to take care of these factors as well if one desires long term improvement in the patient’s condition. Extensive researches in the field of stress and the significance of doctor-patient relationship is that of transforming the approach of some medical personnels. The word ‘Holistic’ was described by Jan C. Smurt, which means whole or complete. It is only otter a few decades that the seed of holistic

health movement was sown in California, USA. Now, the movement continues to spread and blossom throughout the world and Holistic Health Associations have been established in several countries across the globe.

Along with the above mentioned Acts the meaning of the word Health itself is interesting. Health is derived from old English word ‘hal’ meaning hale, whole, healed. etc. Thus, appropriate approach towards health ought to become Wholistic (holistic).
THE EXTENT OF COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINES IN LATVIA
N. Nickolaev - M.D., Ph.D. (Latvia)
Methods of Complementary medicines are becoming still more popular in Latvia since the time. They are inte-grated in the systems of local Social Welfare and go more deep into the Clinical Medicine in Latvia. The most used complementary medicine specialities are homeopathy and acupuncture. Physicians provide the most part of complementary medicines, but non-doctors using them are some of importance in Latvia. The cooperation of both medical traditions of East and West is successful. Latvia has definite success in it, that resulted in the field of medical postgraduate education, legal clinical application and integration into the State system of Social Welfare.

The licensing to practice

I. General principles:

Latvia has a monopolistic system on licensing medical professions. Only physicians are allowed to undertake medical treatments. In order to practice legally as a recognized physician the following condition are: first, to be graduated from the local Medical Academy or from any other Medical High School which delivers recognized diplomas, then, to undergo the authorization according to the local by-law legislation.

2.1. The situation of physician using complementary medicines:

The Council of the Ministers of Republic of Latvia delegated the Medical Society of the Republic of Latvia the power to regulate and survey all medical specialties. Only doctors certified in the field of complementary medicines may practice legally, after having passed through the special training courses. They are controlled by an expert commission which encloses members of medical associations, in cooperation with representatives of Medical Society of the Republic of Latvia. Concerning acupuncture, for example, the Association of Medical Acupuncture and Related Techniques is in charge of the certification of physicians in Latvia. The Certification Commission includes 10 experts-professionals and is headed by the president of the Association. Analogue commissions provide certification for other methods of complementary medicines. The state certificate is valid for a period of five years. Then, in order to obtain a new authorization, the practitioners have to follow new courses and pass a new examination. Acupuncture and homeopathy got the legal status of clinical specialities (equal in right among the others clinical specialities of Western medicine) since 1990.

2.2 The situation of non-allopathic medical practitioners using complementary medicines:

people without a medical education are not allowed to practice complementary medicines even with the condition that they work under the survey of a recognized health professional. In practice, alternative medicines seldom are used also by “healers” who do not have any recognized training. In these cases, the Administrative Codex tackles a penalty for unauthorized medical practice. It consists in the practice of complementary medicines without authorization. However, patients sue healers very seldom, if their health has not been damaged. Generally speaking, non-doctors are prosecuted by local medical officials and are taken under the tough control of the medical Associations.

2.3. The training of practitioners:

since 1990, medical Acupuncture and the theory of traditional Chinese Medicine are integrated in the training process for postgraduates. Over 500 physicians from the countries of Scandinavia and Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania passed already through this International Training course. There are some special shoot-period courses in order to give special limited knowledge (between one and two years medical courses within the Authorized Program).

The reimbursement of complementary medicines

1. Presentation of the Healthcare System: the Ministry of Social Welfare which includes four departments: Health, Work, Social Insurance and Social Protection is responsible for the healthcare system. A Social tax and other general taxes finance the healthcare system. The whole population of Latvia is covered by the Social Insurance. People, who need Medical Care can choose their physicians or therapists. The Health Insurance covers the majority of medical costs. A copayment is required for drugs and for some therapies which are not included in the list of medical specialities and methods, (also including certain complementary medicines).

2. The situation of complementary medicines: Complementary medicine activities were, generally, not covered by the compulsory Health Insurance. The expenses were usually covered by patients. However, since Acupuncture and Homeopathy were included in the list of medical specialities in 1990), the Social Insurance is going to reimburse all expenses in connection with them (including consultations and treatments). This will be guaranteed by local State Medical Insurance Company. As for some of methods of diagnosis Dr. R. Volt electropuncture, iridodiagnosis, bioresonance, for example) they will have partial reimbursement.

The present tendency is that private insurance are also going to cover Complementary Medicines. Starting from 1998, two insurance companies (“Balta” and “Parex”) will cover Complementary Medicines (particularly acupuncture and Homeopathy). The reimbursement will include both the consultation and the treatment given by doctors.
THE CONCEPTUAL APPROACH TO THE SYSTEM OF JIN-LUE
N. Nickolaev - M.D., Ph.D. (Latvia)
A system can be defined as the unification of things or parts to compose a whole for certain objectives. An automobile, for example, is a mechanical system fueled by gasoline and designed for the purpose of transportation. Acupuncture and moxibustion are systems of medical care that use needles and moxa, respectively, to treat diseases by the stimulation of specific points on the body surface. Among various systems, there are those that have no relationship whatsoever, such as a mechanical system and a political system. On the other hand, there are interconnected systems, such as the therapeutic systems of acupuncture and moxibustion. There are also systems that exist within one another. These are the various treatment systems existing within the framework of acupuncture. It is possible to connect two unrelated systems by means of an "interface".

In the therapeutic systems of acupuncture and moxibustion, the meridians (a general term referring to channels and collaterals) can be considered as the systemization of longitudinal relationships between acupuncture points. The meridians, including extra channels and tendon channels, were possibly conceived as parallel systems of energy transmission. Although the system of meridians is one that describes the longitudinal relationship between acupuncture points, certainly it is not the only such system conceivable. The "hardware" or physical mechanism behind meridians has yet to be clarified scientifically. It is known through centuries of clinical application, however, that the meridians have practical value as a "software" for treatment. Such is often the case with practical application of systems or methods. The meridian system did not originate suddenly in its fully developed form as it appears in acupuncture texts today. In the ancient text excavated from MaWangTui in China, there is no mention of a hand Jueyin meridian, nor is there any reference to a Three Yin-Three Yang categorization or to the Five Phases. The meridian system used in that era was much simpler, but no doubt it was quite effective as a therapeutic system in its day. In this regard, in the twenty-first chapter of SuWen, only four categories are given for the meridians. The back of the body is controlled by Taiyang, the front by Yangming, the lateral aspect by Shaoyang, and the medial aspect of the limbs by Tai Yin. This suggests that the categories for meridians were developed in stages. Among all the various ways of classifying the meridians which have come down to this day, only a few of them are used in clinical practice. An exercise system known as Daoyin existed in China from before the Han Dynasty (200 BC). The energy system of tendon channels presented in the Ling Shu has a deep relationship with the Daoyin exercise system for balancing energy. Nevertheless, there is no complete record giving the guiding principle for applying the tendon channels for general treatment. Very few acupuncturists today use the tendon channels for anything other than symptomatic treatments to relieve localized muscular pain. Other concepts of meridians, such as divergent channels related to the longitudinal relationships between acupuncture points, were probably also applied in various treatment systems used through history, but the original design behind these seldom applied concepts is lost. Most recently, the system of Bagang Bianzheng (differentiation of syndromes by assessing the imbalances in four pairs of complementary factors - i.e. yin/yang, deficiency/ excess, exterior/interior, heat/cold) has been established as the basic model for deciding the combination of points. Actually, any number of diagnostic paradigms can be applied as the basis for a system of treatment. Nevertheless, as long as the issue is one of imbalances, the question is to assess the difference between the two complementary factors. Acupuncture and moxibustion traditionally have two important treatment systems: general treatment (zhiben) and symptomatic treatment (zhibiao). General treatment - adjustment of overall energetic imbalances; symptomatic treatment - treatment aimed at alleviating complaints. in the case of general treatments, even when complaints or diseases vary, a common pattern is sought with the aim of balancing the body as a whole by providing treatments using standard point combinations. In practice, however, both treatment systems are necessary like two wheels to an axle. Today there is a mend favoring symptomatic treatments over general treatments. We consider general treatments as having the following distinguishing features:

(l) It. is performed first. It thus serves to clear the way for the procedures to follow. When successful, it is sufficient in itself. At the very least, it simplifies the rest of the treatment. (2) Specific factors such as individual differences and constitution are taken into consideration. (3) It requires some simple and verifiable diagnostic checks. (4) Such checks allow the selection of points for treatment to be decided for patients who are difficult to diagnose by the usual means. (5) The method of treatment can be decided for incipient diseases beyond detection by normal means. (6) The major physical imbalances can be treated in cases where a patient has more than one disease and there are a variety of symptoms.

The objective of general treatment is to correct physical imbalances. These include differences between the two halves of the body such as right and left, top and bottom and front and back.

From the standpoint of traditional Chinese medicine, the adjustment of energy imbalances in relation to these yin and yang aspects of the body is considered to be the oldest and most basic aim in general treatments.

The more primitive an organism is, the more it has symmetry in the cephalic-caudal, ventral-dorsal, and right-left antimeres. In the case of humans, such symmetry is only retained partially between the right and left halves of the body. It seems that the ancient Chinese who developed acupuncture, recognized some relationships of syntagonism and antagonism in energy between opposite halves of the body. Eight octants or aspects of the body can be distinguished by sectioning the body, by the sagittal, coronal, and transverse planes.

We consider the eight octants as one of the basic models used in ancient China for the selection of acupuncture points. This is because the yin-yang classification of meridians can be viewed as the most basic model preceding the development of the principles of the Five Phases. The application in acupuncture of the Five Phases and other categories of meridians came much later. Selecting acupuncture points from the basic perspective of balancing yin and yang aspects of the body enables the construction of a very useful general treatment system.

When the body is viewed in octants, this implies the existence of demarcation lines between the octants. We regard these to be the Conception and Governing Vessels on the sagittal plane: the San Jiao, Gallbladder, Pericardium, and Spleen meridians on the coronal plane, and the Dai meridian on the transverse plane. It is possible that in the past there existed special rules for selecting points on the extra meridians that divide the body into yin and yang halves, but no such treatment system has survived to this day. The primary significance of treatments using the extra channels is in balancing energy between the octants, and this differs from attempts to affect a balance between the twelve regular meridians. Adjusting the yin-yang balance of the right and left, top and bottom, and front and back halves of the body should come prior to symptomatic treatments. In my experience, balancing energy in complementary aspects of the body increases the effectiveness of localized and symptomatic treatments. This kind of general treatment enables effective treatment by the use of a minimum number of acupuncture points and stimulation. In the principle of yin and yang they are divided respectively to become Tai Yang, Shao Yang, Tai Yin, and Shao Yin. These are further divided into the eight trigrams. These trigrams are then combined to create the 64 hexagrams. In this way the divisions become more and more minute. Eight categories are much simpler to deal with than 64, and four categories are simpler still. The most important is to divide the general treatment system into a few relatively simple subsystems or steps. In this way treatments can be provided for every step in reference to the factors being examined. And if a certain treatment or use of points is not effective in accomplishing specific objectives, another technique or combination of points can be employed. There are many records of treatments in classical Chinese texts that discuss overall adjustment without treating individual symptoms. The very concept of meridians, which essentially refers to the longitudinal relationship between acupuncture points, was most likely conceived for the purpose of general treatments. However, today the meridians are used more for symptomatic treatment. The most interesting part about dealing with meridians, rather than treating the points individually, is coming up with effective point combinations. I feel that the best general treatment system is one that treats the meridians in a flexible way by use of point combinations on the right and left, top and bottom, and front and back halves of the body.
THE ROOTS OF ELECTRO-ACUPUNCTURE
N. Nickolaev - M.D. Ph.D. (Latvia)
Tremendous advancements have been made in our understanding of biological phenomena over the past few decades. A few pioneers like Bruce Pomeranz and Robert Becker have persevered and brought new insights into the fundamental bioelectric activities which underlie the physiology of acupuncture. Unfortunately, it seems that many of us in practice are lagging behind in our general understanding of these principles. This becomes especially apparent in our application of electroacupuncture. Many of us were simply taught to connect the electrical device to several needles, turn on the machine until the patient felt it strongly, and that was it. Ostensibly, this was to enhance our treatment. But further study reveals electroacupuncture has many more components which can dramatically affect our therapeutic outcomes. The clearer we are about these fundamentals, the better our treatment outcomes.

Most people assume electrical medicine is something of recent origin. However, as with acupuncture, its roots are buried in antiquity. Subtle electrical therapy probably began with the application of lodestones to acupuncture points. They were made from magnetite, a naturally magnetic material, and were believed to have a potent life force since they moved by themselves. But there is an interesting history to stronger attempts at electrotherapy.

In the first century AD, Scribonius Largus, (a physician in Nero's army) treated gout and headaches by applying a type of electric eel. Although he had some successes, many patients didn't survive the treatment. Gennai Hiraga of Envo (Japan) reportedly used Electro-stimulation with acupuncture as far back as 1764. In 1757, Ben Franklin used an electrical device to treat frozen shoulder and post-CVA paralysis. He referred to it as being "electricised". His results were good, but short term, lasting only a few days. Luigi Galvani, in 1791, discovered that electrical impulses caused muscle to contract. This earmarked the beginning of our understanding of the electrical nature of muscle. By 1800, Carlo Matteucci had discovered that injured tissue generates an electrical current. By 1812, an English physician, John Birch, was using electric shocks to treat non-union tibial fractures. About the same time (1816), a French physician, Louis Berlioz, was applying DC current to acupuncture needles. In 1825 another French physician, Chevalier Sarlandiere, was treating gout and rheumatism with acupuncture enhanced by electrical currents. This was generally done by connecting the needles to Leyden jars, glass jars covered in tin which acted as condensers for electrical current.

In the United States during the 1800s, Doctor Hall, (in Pennsylvania) used DC current through acupuncture needles for treating non-union fractures. And in 1860, Arthur Garret, a Boston physician, published an entire textbook on electrotherapy. He also applied DC current to acupuncture needles to treat non-unions. In the text he stated that in the few times he'd used it, this method had never failed. In 1875, Dr. L.H. Cohen used electro-acupuncture as anesthesia for removal of a glandular tumor. There are other examples as well. The point is that the integration of electricity and acupuncture occurred far earlier than most of us realize.

Since the 1950s, and even before, science and medicine employed a paradigm based upon the chemical, mechanistic concept of life. That is, all biological activity was essentially viewed as an array of chemical reactions which influenced structure and could ultimately be measured and quantified. Unfortunately, these paradigm was supported by an attitude which still exists, that if we can't see it or measure it, it must not exist. We now know this perspective has limitations. In fact some physicians and others who relegate acupuncture to placebo or hocus-pocus are sorely underinformed.

More recently, science has begun to recognize that the chemistry of life is based upon the underlying forces of electricity and magnetism. These forces influence the chemical activity, which leads to functional and structural changes. Therefore, we have two antithetical viewpoints on biological activity, 'structure determines function' and 'function determines structure'. Both paradigms have value. A similar paradox occurs in the world of physics, represented by the views of Quantum physics us. Newtonian physics. Quantum physics has discovered that the components of the atom don't necessarily follow the same physical laws that the atom as a whole seems to follow. Again, both views seem opposing, yet each has its proper application. By understanding these underlying bioelectrical dynamics more clearly, we can develop therapies which have a closer approximation to what the body naturally does. Additionally, we may come to recognize new diseases which are linked to chronic or excessive exposure to the multitude of electromagnetic fields surrounding us.
SYSTEM FOR DIAGNOSTIC AND CORRECTOR OF FUNCTION CONDITIONS
A.Nicolaenco, B. Shpilevoj, A. Sivakov (Byelorussia)
The present system ‘LEDIS’ intends to express diagnostics of patient function conditions by methods of Electro-acupuncture and correction of reveal alteration by methods of Electro-laser-therapy.

System structure:
  • complex of Electro-acupuncture diagnostic;
  • complex of Electro-laser-reflector-therapy;
  • PC IBM

Description. The program-apparatus means of Electro-acupuncture diagnostic provide with:
  • measuring and analysis of Electro-parameters system of the representative zones of man;
  • identification of the inner organs function conditions;
  • drawing up the recommendation for the treatment for the reveal clinical alterations;
  • duration of diagnostic regimen 3-5 min. The main advantage of this complex, if compared with another analogs, is ability of testing many times during the twenty-four hours. The optimal parameters of apparatus and methods of measuring exclude blockading of acupuncture zones and permit to make an inspection of patients before and after medical influence for the estimation of its effectiveness.

The program-apparatus means of laser therapy permit to make the individual dose influence in the autonomous regimen and in the regimen of control through PC. The peculiarities of laser therapy complex are:
  • ability of modification from the one-canal laser installation to the multi-canal laser system for the simultaneous influence on several points (zones) on the patient’s body;
  • operative and reliable control for the level of influence laser radiation;
  • original regimens alteration of the frequency and power parameters of laser radiation for provision of simulant, harmonious and sedative effects;
  • possibility of exploitation by average medical staff or exploitation in the house conditions under the physician’s prescription;
  • possibility of creation the data base for storing information about patient’s conditions and about standard regimens or individual procedure of laser therapy as well.
ELECTROHOMEOSTASYS OF ACUPUNCTURE POINTS OF HEART
J. Popov (Russia)
The concept a Electrohomeostasys of the person for the first time was formulated by J. A. Popov in 1982. A Electrohomeostasys this steady dynamic persistence of electrical processes in an organism which is flowing past at various levels - submolecular, molecular, subcell-like, cell-like, intercell-like and an organism as a whole, which determines a state of a metabolism both separate cell of various organs, and whole organism as a whole, reflecting habitability of the person.

The Electrohomeostasys of the person and it of biological active points is carried out thanking electronic - pro-ton of transport system of blood. (J.A.Popov, 1996, 1997). The research problem - detection of acupuncture points responsible for a regional Electrohomeostasys of heart. For an evaluation of electrical potentials in zones of biological active points the method of a Electrography (J. A. Popov, 1997) is used. 204 patients with various diseases in the age of from 4 till 84 years are inspected.

The comparison of detected zones of acupuncture points on a thorax with a projectional position of the right and left ventriculuses of heart is conducted. The authentic differences in electrical potentials of acupuncture points for the right and left ventriculuses of heart are detected statistically. Comparisons to traditional Chinese points on a thorax has shown, that the active acupuncture points of heart correspond to 6 corporalis channels - right and left channels of kidneys, left channel of a bile bubble, left channel of a liver, left channel of a stomach and left channel of a pancreas and lien. The following acupuncture points of correspondence on these channels have been detected: R 23 r, R 23 I, VB 22 I, VB 23 I, RP 17 I, E 18 I, F 14 I.

Is clarified, that these points reflect a regional Electrohomeostasys of heart and feature of operation it electronic - proton of transport system of blood. Thus, the state of a regional Electrohomeostasys of heart discovers the reflection in electropotentials biological active points of heart, which are located in skin of a thorax and correspond to active acupuncture points to six corporalis channels.

Therefore it is necessary to consider points of correspondence to the right and left ventriculuses of heart as cardiaca points of correspondences recommended for treatment of the patients.
THE EFFECT OF ACUPUNCTURE ON THE RESTING ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPH (EEG)
P. Rosted, N. Gravill, P. Bacon and P. Griffrths (U.K. England)
The effect of acupuncture on the resting electroencephalograph (EEG) of 14 normal volunteer subjects (4 males and 10 females) was investigated using topographic mapping and quantitative date analysis techniques. Baseline eyes closed EEG data was obtained for several minutes prior to and after session of all acupuncture procedures which consisted of manual manipulation of the Li-4 (Hegu) acupuncture point for period of 30, 60 and 120 seconds. Frequency analysis of the EEG data from each acupuncture event was obtained and compared to the baseline data to show any significant changes in the amplitude spectra over the bandwidth 0.3 to 30 Hz. Averaging the results from the 14 subjects showed an increase in amplitude of the low frequencies up to 2 Hz, and a small decrease in the dominant rhythm on all electrodes. The changes in the alpha and beta bands are similar to those brought about when the attention of the subjects varies during recording and muscle pressure tension is present. However the increase in amplitude of the low frequencies cannot be explained by these mechanisms but pain may contribute to the changes.
DO WE NEED DISTANT POINTS?
P. Rosted - M.D. (U.K. England)
According to Chinese textbooks distant points are nearly always recommended when using acupuncture. For example is acupuncture point St-36 recommended among other points in the treatment of asthma. Is there a logical explanation for using this point, or are we just using this point because we have been told? The author challenges the use of distant points and discusses a logic approach to determine, if a distant point should be used or not. Furthermore the author discusses the scientific background for using distant points.
COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES AND THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICES
Vilhelm Schjelderup - M.D. (Norway)
Most countries have great problems making ends and means meet in their health policies. Although Norway is in a most favorable economic situation, it is no exception, and the crisis in the Norwegian health services is presently a major issue in our domestic politics. Complementary therapies may offer some ideas and present some practical methods that may help to resolve this crisis.

By government initiative and parliamentary decision a committee is now at work in Norway to prepare an incorporation of alternative therapies into our health services. This creates a golden opportunity for complementary medicine in Norway where it is mandatory that we choose the right strategies, both at the theoretical and the practical level.

A main reason for the present medical crisis is that modern medicine lacks a scientific theory to explain the work of the healing system of the organism. Complementary therapies, like the bioholographic methods (ECIWO medicine), acupuncture and homeopathy may, according to the speaker, be explained on the basis of a theory of the healing system.

At the practical level it is now important to demonstrate that specific complementary therapies may solve major health problems. Three research projects to this purpose that either have been started or are proposed, are explained:

1. The treatment of asthma in children with a new type of light-acupuncture based on the formation of Singlet-Oxygen by a photochemical process.

2. The treatment of diabetes by ECIWO acupuncture.

3. The treatment of coxarthrosis by implantation of a small piece of gold thread in the acupuncture point Liver-3.
THE THEORY OF "ROOTS AND KNOTS" (LIN SHU, CHAPTER 5): A NEW VERSION OF THE SUBJECT
M. Teppone - M.D., R. Avagyan - M.D. (Russia)
To fulfil the defensive function against the Exogenous Pathogenic Factors, the Regular Channels are coupled accord-ing to the Yang-Yang and Yin-Yin principle, realizing the “Upper-Lower” connections. The pairs of channels are disposed at various depths relative to the skin layers.
1-st level,     Tai Yang:     Bladder and Small Intestine;
2-nd level,     Shao Yang:     Gallbladder and Triple Burner;
3-rd level,     Yang Ming:     Stomach and Large Intestine;
4-th level,     Tai Yin:     Spleen and Lung;
5-th level,     Jue Yin:     Liver and Pericardium;
6-th level,     Shao Yin:     Kidney and Heart;

Defensive function is effected by the normal or free circulation of Defensive Qi (Wei Qi) upwards from “Root” to “Knot” points and between the layers from Tai Yang; inside to Shao Yin.

Diseases originating in the level or layer system are caused by invasion of “extreme pathogenic energies” (Evil Qi), i.e. those which are not specific for the particular season. These extreme Evil Qi do not invade the Regular Channels or Organs but affect the Collaterals causing thus the “strange diseases”. Except the clinical manifestations of affected Collaterals there are symptoms of Qi circulation disturbance in the affected layer.

Symptoms of Levels
the disease originates on the body surface:
  • pain syndromes are distinctly expressed;
  • due to reduced protection reserves, the organism is highly vulnerable to various diseases;
  • thinned skin and muscles of patient are notable in external examination

Yang Qi circulation is disturbed which gives stagnation of pathogenic Qi:
  • muscles and joints are weakened and painful;
  • the patient is unable to assume a vertical position and run.

Defensive Yang Qi is blocked and does not penetrate inside the body:
  • muscle weakness is increased, limbs become powerless;
  • there appear paralyses.

Stomach Defensive Yang Qi may not penetrate deep and feed Zang Organs:
  • Qi and food transportation to the organs is disturbed;
  • symptoms of reduced energy are present, including violent diarrhea;
  • Zang Organs are blocked with symptoms such as abdominal distension and pains in the epigastrium region.

Connection between the Yin channels is disturbed:
  • energy flood is reduced, stagnation exist, accompanied by symptoms such as general weakness, difficult labor and short breath in a rest position;
  • tendency to depression and mental diseases.

Level does not close Yin inside:
  • Wei Qi is extremely deficient;
  • the patient permanently sighs and moans.
Affection of some level is usually accompanied by symptoms of Collaterals affection, including the Extra Channels. Thus the 3 Yin Channels affection is combined with Ren Mai; while Shao Yin affection is related with the entire Yin Wei Mai; Shao Yang and Yang Ming may combine with Dai Mai, while Tai Yang is related with Yang Jiao Mai, etc.

The aim of treatment of such syndromes is to restore the normal circulation of Defensive Energy (Wei Qi, or Yang Qi) both along the channels from “Roots” to “Knot” points, and between the layers. The affected channel must be “opened”, i.e. reinforced in case of Deficiency and sedated in case of Excess.

The Deficiency is caused by the lack of Defensive Energy (Wei Qi), therefore “Knot” and “Roots” points should be reinforced. When acupuncture is used, the needling should be shallow to prevent the penetration of Exogenous Factor into deeper parts of organism. Excess is caused by the Exogenous Factor which should be dispersed in the same points.
THE MODERN ASPECTS OF EHF-PUNCTURE
M. Teppone - M.D., R. Avagyan - M.D. (Russia)
EHF-PUNCTURE: The EHF-Punture applies low intensity electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of millimeter (MM) band. On the EMR spectrum, EHF resides between centimeter radio waves and infrared waves and includes frequencies from 30 to 300 GHz or wavelengths from 10 to 1 mm. In clinical practice the usual applied power of this radiation is 1.0-0.001 mW and less. The combination of different biological effects of MM EMR and acupuncture theory of TCM resulted in the procedure known as Extremely High Frequency (EHF) - Puncture.

PECULIARITIES: EHF-Puncture proclaims the same principles as traditional Acupuncture and Moxibustion but nevertheless has some peculiarities: EHF-Puncture is non-invasive, so there is no problem of sterilization of instruments or danger of bacteria or viruses transmission from one patient to another; painless; universal: MM EMR can be used to treat “Deficiency” or “Excess”, “Heat” or “Cold” syndromes, the type of response depends on the initial condition of the patient and the exposure time depends on responses of the patient; EHF-Puncture permits one and the same acupoint to be “tonified” or “dispersed” several times during the same procedure; can stimulate different kinds of “Arrival of Qi phenomenon” without needle manipulation, sensory reactions may even be observed in paralyzed extremities of spinal trauma patients: MM waves can stimulate specific sensory reactions (phenomenon De Qi) not only at the place of influence but at the place of Qi-disorders directly: so, one may apply it to influence on the corporal traditional acupoints as well as points of different micro-systems: Ear, Palm, Soul, Pulse points, Nose, etc.

DEVICES FOR EHF-PUNCTURE: A series of “Artsakh” devices intended for EHF -Puncture therapy is based on a solid state MM generator with a microprocessor managing system and provide three radiation modes: coherent (at the frequencies of absorption lines of oxygen or water vapor: 60.0; 118.0 and 184.0 GHz), “noise” (42-95 and 90-160 GHz) and combined. It is possible to adjust output power, internal amplitude modulation (1-200 Hz) and exposure time. The generator head of each device may be provided with infrared or colour radiation.

DIAGNOSTIC DEVICES: A special diagnostic device called “ACUVISION” has been developed for the purposes of testing the functional status of the patients’ acupoints and channels. This device visualizes acupoints with low electrical resistance by means of illumination in a high -voltage corona discharge field. Intensity of illumination and relaxation time can be used as criteria of “Excess” syndrome at certain acupoints and channels. “ACUVISION” visualizes acupoints on human or animal skin as well as on the surface of plants.

To monitor the patients’ condition during EHF-Puncture therapy objectively, we have developed special radiometers to measure deep temperature. Temperature changes on the skin surface and inside the body correlates with “arrival of Qi phenomenon” and helps the doctor to optimize the treatment regimen.
THE EFFICIENCY OF USE OF FIVE ELEMENTS SPLEEN MERIDIAN POINTS FOR TREATMENT OF DIFFERENT CASES.
A. Triechiakauskene - M.D. (Lithuania)
There were treated 508 patients, 125 of them were treated using Five Elements Spleen meridian points. These points were chosen by indications of pulse diagnosis.

The considerable improvement of clinical simptoms was found in 88,1% cases.

Especially, we would like to draw your attention to those patients, whose treatment by alopatic method was not very successful earlier. There were patients suffering dyskinetic sindrom / blepharospasmus, torticollis /, Parkinson's disease and polyneuropathia.
THE APPLICATION OF ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT FOR PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASES /PID/ AT WOMEN
Piotr Wozniak M.D, Ph.D., (Poland)
Introduction.

At the end of the XX century, there is an immense improvement in the field of medicine. However, there are still diseases which cannot be healed effectively. The reports published in different countries provide information that the main problem at the end of the century are chronic diseases which do not exclude gynaecological ones. The classic example are pelvic inflammatory diseases of women. In the reports of epidemiologists an increase in the amount of hospitalized patients because of PID is really striking. This process was started in the sixties and includes part of Europe (Italy, Portugal, France, Germany, Poland), the USA and Canada. A new medical, economical and social problem appeared. The report made by National Center Health Statistic at the beginning of the fifties says that the ratio of severe PID to chronic ones is 1 to 9. There is more and more news that PID are connected with the decrease in immunity. Acupuncture, thanks to its analgesic, antiphlogistic effectiveness and possibility of increase in immunity, became daily PID treatment in our Institute. Effectiveness of acupuncture is emphasized especially in the cases where pharmotherapy did not show good results.

The Aims.

The aim of this work was appreciation of acupuncture treatment for PID

Materials and methods:
Researches were made on 164 women at the age 26 - 37, who had been treated earlier because of PID in Lodz Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Polish institute Mother's Memorial Hospital. The main symptom was ache features of PlD. This disease had different force patients for many months. The disease appeared because of severe PID which changed into a chronic state, and was the reason of repeated relapse into disease. Gynaecologocal research indicates the features of PID (callosity and the growth of oviducts, postinflammatory adhesion, pain during examination, sensitivity of uterus). Sick women had been treated by antibiotics which broke analgesic effectiveness which did not yield good results and caused only short-term improvement. Before the detailed researches with all the ill people were made, amanuensis had been made in order to establish the essence of the disease, the time and the number of relapses of the disease. The idea of using acupuncture, its technical form and time of the treatment had also been explained.

The whole program of treatment included 148 women. Out of this group a subgroup of 40 women was made, who had an additional set of examination before and after the treatment. This set included indications of immunoglobulin's concentration of IgG, IgA, IgM class, concentration of C3 and C4 fraction complement of immunological groups of IgG, IgM class. Additionally the indication of OB parameter was made. Every patient had 10 applications during 3 weeks. Each application lasted 20 minutes. 10-12 needles were used which had different lengths from 2 to 6 cm. The following points were used: Hegu (Li 4), Quchi (Li 1l), Quichong (St 30), Zusanli (St 36), Sanyinjiao (Sp 6), Xuehai (Sp 10), Feishu (Ub 13), Shangliao (Ub 13), Dazhui (Gv 14), Qogu (Cv 2), Xingjian (Liv 2).

Auricular points: The evaluation of effectiveness of acupuncture treatment was made on the ground of the following results:
  • subjective patient's opinion about the pain before and after the treatment (a) analogical scale of pain (VAS), (b) a scale of pain in points from 0 to 10, (c) a descriptive scale of pain.
  • gynaecological examination
  • laboratory tests of chosen immunological parameters (made in Diagnostic Department of Institute Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital).

The results of the researches were subjected to statistic analysis, using Shapiro-Wolf test which stated whether the frequency of feature is normal. In case of normal frequency, a parametrical T-student test was used with the level of trust p. = 0,01. If there was no normal frequency of a feature a Wilcoxon test was used.

Results:
Using analogical, point and descriptive scale of pain it was stated that among the examined group of women 83% of them were completely cured, at 11% of them there was improvement, and there was no improvement at 6%. In gynaecological research at women who regarded the results as good and very good the cease of PID was observed.

In the researches of immunological parameters statistic increase in concentration of immunological fractions was observed: IgG (at 89%), IgA (at 93%) and IgM (at 89%). The statistic decrease in the concentration of goup immunological fractions IgG and IgM, the increase of the fraction C3 (at 93%) and C4 (at 91%) was observed.

OB parameter decreased in 88% of cases. The decrease was stated to be statistically significant.

Conclusions:
l. Acupuncture is the method which can be used with very good results in treatment of pelvic inflammatory diseases.
2. Acupuncture has an influence on changes of immunological parameters in pelvic inflammatory diseases at women.
THE PROBLEM OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE INTEGRATION INTO THE ACADEMIC WESTERN MEDICINE
A. Esertas - M.D., V. Stavickis - M.D. (Lithuania)
SUMMARY

In the article there is a suggestion to distinguish between 3 integration stages. The first stage is only the tolerance of the Eastern medicine technologies without any support and official legalization from the state. Actually at present the integration is in partial second stage when there are attempts to legalize acupunctural medicine, reflexotherapy and so on as a medical subspeciality or speciality.

Means for putting into practice the third integration stage are recommended: to work out motivation for the medical men and patients to strive towards the principles of holistic medicine, to correspondingly develop the students, medical men, young lecturers and patients qualities, mentality, to supplement the subject lectured on in medical Academy, to realize the corresponding post-diploma doctors training and refreshment.

Objective and subjective obstacles for carrying out the means are indicated.

In the 21st century the terms "West", "East" medicine ought to become only historic categories. The medicine of the 21st century is integrated medicine the main criteria of which are rationales and long-term effectiveness under maximum preservation of ecology and naturalness.
