THE USE OF GAS DISCHARGE VISUALISATION METHOD (GDV) TO EVALUATE THE PATIENTS' STATE AND ESTIMATE EFFECTIVITY OF A COMPLEX WAY OF TREATMENT, INCLUDING ACUPUNCTURE

A complex investigation of 312 patients and 40 healthy persons was performed. As a main theoretical principle, we used a holistic conception, based on the approaches of synergetics and oriental medicine. The investigation included analysis of GDV-parameters of the fingers.
The physical ground of GDV-method is Kirlian effect a "crown" luminescence, which appears around objects in the electric field of high tension.
The correlations between the electrophysiological characteristics of fingers (evaluated by GDV-method), brain (electroencephalogram), heart (electrocardiogram) were revealed. The significant role of autonomic neural system disturbances in the regulation of the balance of bioelectrical activity was proved.
In patients with the mild course of the disease the GDV-parameters (square of a picture, noise level and fractal coefficients) approximated to those of the healthy persons and reflected the psychophysiological condition of the subject rather than the nosological diagnosis. The exacerbation of the disease, as well as the growth of its severity, was accompanied by the marked changes of GDV-parameters: the decrease of the square of a luminescence, noise level and fractality of a picture.
The mechanism of action of some drugs and acupuncture session was evaluated by GDV-method and breath function study. The analysis showed, that the significant difference exists between the effect of broncholytics and the "weak" influences (acupuncture - AP - and homeopathic drugs). The influence of AP on breath function was significantly lower than the effect of broncholytics inhalation. At the other hand, the AP session lead to significant positive changes of GDV-parameters, and the berotec inhalation caused negative GDV-changes in most of the patients.
The "one-session" use of the constitutional homeopathic drugs lead to the positive GDV-changes significantly more often, than the use of placebo.
The results of the study show that the changes of bioelectrical activity may play an important role in the improvement of bronchial permeability.
The study also revealed, that GDV-method can be used in evaluation of the peculiarities of the course of the disease and the effect of the treatment.
The results of the investigation confirm the principles of synergetics and oriental medicine about the effectivity of the "weak" influences. They also give the possibility to recommend the complex treatment, including the allopathic methods (broncholytics) and natural therapy (AP and homeopathy) as a way to heighten the effectivity of treatment of the asthmatic patients.

LATEST DEVELOPMENT ECIWO ACUPUNCTURE

In 1959, Charles Darwin published his famous work the Origin of Species. In his work, he discussed the correlation between certain parts of an organism. For example, hairless dogs have imperfect teeth; pigeons with feathered feet have skin between their outer toes; pigeons with short beaks have small feet and those with long beaks have large feet. However, he failed to explain his findings nor a general law governing the distribution of those correlated regions.

1n 1973, Prof. Ying Qung Zhang stumbled across numerous existence of physiologically or pathologically correlated regions in the human body as well as the general law of distribution governing these correlated regions. The discovery had a direct application in medicine later on.
The ECIWO system got its name from the Embryo Containing the Information of the Whole Organism, first suggested in 1973 by Professor Zhang of Shandong University, China. Initiate efforts to spread his idea came in the form of conferences and seminars only held in China. The first opportunity to introduce this idea to the world came in 1990 during the 1st International Congress of ECIWO Biology (held in Singapore). The event attracted participants from more than 27 countries. Following the success of the first conference, the 2nd International Congress of ECIWO Biology was held in Norway in 1992.
Apart from Professor Zhang, there are some other people who have also made contributions towards ECIWO biology. Professor Yong Zhai Ye of Fujian Agricultural University, China published a book on ECIWO biology in 1988, to help the ECIWO concept gain recognition and acceptance during the early stage at the development.
In 1994, Professor Lai Tian Li of Shandong Medical University published his first book relating Medical application with ECIWO. In 1993, Professor Yi Xu Zhang of Datong wrote a book with similar concept of those from Professor Li. Around the same period in 1995, I derived a method called Embryo System of Chinese Traditional Medicine and Acupuncture, otherwise known as the E-system, which was based upon the ECIWO concepts. The essential difference between the sole ECIWO concepts and of mine is that the former was built and evolved around the 2nd Metacarpal bone while mine can be applied to any part of the body.
The particular regions in the 2nd Metacarpal segmentum of the human hand will also correspond to particular regions of the body. There exists a physiological or pathological correlation between each pair of corresponding regions. The law of distribution of correlated regions on the 2nd Metacarpal segmentum is thus the same law at distribution of their correlated regions on the entire body. The E-system enables us to further apply such law with respect to the other part of the body instead of merely restricting to the 2nd Metacarpal bone. Till date, with my research and clinical experiences, I have been invited to give lectures / talks on E-system in countries like Russia, USA, France, Germany and India.

NEW DIAGNOSTIC METHODS IN ACUPUNCTURE

"Acu Vision" is a new device developed for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose. It combines effects of air-ion therapy and electropuncture.
The grounded biological object (man, animal, plant, fruit) is placed into the electrostatic field created by a highvoltage corona discharge. Minimum electrical resistance points are the places on the skin surface where air-ions are absorbed. In this case effects of air-ion puncture are realized.
For diagnostic purpose object must be covered by a thin dielectric layer (a paper, cotton fabric, polyester film, etc.). Electrostatic field intensity is maximum at the points of minimum skin resistance and exactly at these points luminescence originates as a result of transformation of corona discharge into spark discharge. The luminescence brightness and duration are diagnostic criteria. The suggested diagnostic method allows to estimate the functional state of analyzed biological object using corporal (meridian and extraordinary) points as well as points of various micro-systems (ear, nose, palm, sole, etc.). At the same time electro-puncture effects are realized.
The complex ("Acu Vision" - CCD - interface - PC) and special software provides automatic differential diagnostic based on both TCM syndrome and modern nosological approach.
"RTM-O1" medical radiothermograph consists of the infrared sensor andmicrowave radiometers with the special sofware and PC. It has been developed for the early detection of internal organs diseases. The detection of various pathology is conducted by measuring intensity of natural electromagnetic radiation from the patients' internal tissues at microwave range and from the skin at the infrared range. This radiation intensity is proportional to the temperature of tissues. The depth of the internal thermal detection is from 3 to 7 cm. As the changes in the tissues temperature precede the structural changes, RTM1-01 radiothermograph can be used to diagnose diseases at the early stage.
Temperature field distribution of the patients suffering from the exact disease and organs should be compared with the same parameters of the healthy person. The typical diagnostic criteria characterized for the analyzed disease and organ are revealed and displayed as a 2-D diagram. It resulted in the compact zones called "risk areas". If patient's RTM-features are located within the "risk areas", software gives a message that this patient has the exact disease. Reliability of this conclusion has to increase as data are being collected.
The clinical trial conducted among more than 2400 women has shown that radiometric techniques with computer diagnostics ensure high efficiency for the diagnosis of the breast cancer (the detection of breast cancer is above 90%).
One may also apply RTM-01 to control the efficiency of any kind of therapy, including acupuncture and EHF-puncture. During these methods of treatment temperature changes on the skin surface and inside the body correlates with the arrival of Qi phenomenon and helps a doctor to optimize the treatment regimen.
Due to the absolute harmlessness of this examination it can be applied many times without any danger.

LOW BACK PAIN AND ACUPUNCTURE - A SUMMARY

Chronic low back pain, with or without radiation to the leg, continues to be a big problem for many patients. There exist a lot of different treatments for this condition. Many sufferers try stimulation techniques like TENS and acupuncture. In the literature there are quite many studies concerning acupuncture and low back pain.
The literature will be reviewed. Especially there will be discussed meta-analyses that are very often cited in other literature. This article gives examples of problems that often arise with meta-analyses. There will also be a summary of the author's own long-term randomised placebo-controlled study in this field.
Different methods under the broad concept of acupuncture will be discussed.
Different diagnoses that often respond or don't respond to acupuncture will be addressed.
Among the different kinds of acupuncture the following will be summarised:
- trigger-point acupuncture (dry needling);
- superficial acupuncture;
- segmental acupuncture;
- usual de-qt acupuncture;
- some traditional aspects of acupuncture;
- periosteal acupuncture;
- ear acupuncture (auriculotherapy).
A special workshop will be held where different techniques will be discussed (and shown) in more detail.

ASTHMA, TCM AND ACUPUNCTURE

It is not always easy to approach a western medical concept with a TCM mind, because often the patterns do not correspond with each other. In the case of asthma, the notion of allergy as such was not within the scope of the Chinese medical system. There are however a few names of symptoms and a certain number of patterns which we can relate to the modern concept. How to think, in terms of TCM, in front of a patient who is "making noises" while he is breathing? How to decide if the situation is acute or chronic? Is the patient coughing and expectorating, and what are the characteristics of these actions? Is there presence of Heat or Cold? Is the nature of the disease Excess or Deficiency? The differential diagnosis, using the Eight Principles, will of course be very helpful. But will it be enough?
When going through the books, there are some differences between the Chinese TCM books, the Chinese Acupuncture books, and sometimes the western books which have taken a TCM view of the pathology. So there is some cleaning up to do, in order to find a constructive and helpful lead for medical acupuncturists.
In the west we are mostly confronted with patients who are already medicated, and sometimes well balanced. Is it wise to take them off their medicines, even gradually, and try to treat them only with acupuncture? What would a Chinese TCM doctor do? Where are the risks and the dangers? What limits should we set? Should we just try to treat the crisis, or treat the patient in periods of remission, or should we aim at improving the underlying condition or constitution? Or both? In what order?
Is acupuncture really effective in treating what we call asthma? Up to what point? Once we have made a diagnosis in terms of TCM, how to decide our attitude? We must not forget that western medicine has made considerable progress in the understanding of the pathology, and even in its treatment, although asthma seems to be much more frequent than before. So we must carefully weigh the pros and cons of using acupuncture, whether during an attack or in between them.
We shall attempt to answer a few of these questions, make suggestions on how and when to treat, and set the limits beyond which it, would not be reasonable to use acupuncture alone, useless to use it, or even eventually dangerous.

MODIFICATIONS OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF SUBSTANCE P-LIKE IMMUNOREACTIVITY IN THE HIPOTALAMUS OF THE CAT AFTER ELECTROACUPUNCTURE

Summary: The distribution of Substance P in the fibrillar structures of hipotalamus of the cat brain, and its modification with low frequency' electroacupuncture (EA). The frequency was 3-5 Hz and the intensity 8 mA. Periferic stimulation with EA was applied in Hegu and Kumlun points, for 20 min, have been studied using the indirect immunocytochermstry technique. An increase in the soma immunoreactivily of Substance P (Appearance of some inmunoreactives) after stimulation with EA has been observed in the posterior hipotalamus, nucleus ventro medialis hipotalamus, periventicular region y perifornix IR-SP soma fibres have also been seen in some areas of the internal capsule. These observations place the said IR-SP soma modifications in the hipotalamus of the cat brain when subjected to low frequency EA.

Introduction: Electroacupuncture (EA) diminishes pain perception involving the met-enkephalin system (Vacca-Galloway et. al., 19&127;3; Munoz, 1986; Vazquez et al., 1990). It has been observed that EA incluces alterations in the distribution of met-enkephalin, like immunoreactivity in the cat thalamus (Vazquez et al; 1990). Substance P (SP) is a neuropeptide probably related to nociceptive transmission (Lembeck, 1983; Luque, 1988) and thus, with the met-enkephalin system (Hughes 1975); Holdfelt et al.; 1975; Jessel and Iversen, 1977). SP is localized in the small diameter fibres of the posterior horn of the spinal cord, which are considered to be involved in nociceptive transmission. Moreover, alteration of SP-immunoreactivity in the spinal cord after EA has been demonstrated (Vacca Galloway et. al., 1985).
The cerebral basal nucleus shows SP-inununoreactive fibres in the striatonigral pathway (Glowinsky et. al.; 1982), the pallidus-caudate system (Floret and Martinez-Lage, 1983) and the amygdaloid complex (Bouras et al., 1986). In addition, it has been described that the injuries in the caudate nucleus abolish EA analgesia (Gonzalo, 1979), Takeshige et al. 1979).
Thus, in order to obtain new data on nociceptive transmission, the influence of EA or SP-immunoreactivitv on the cerebral hipotalamusi have been investigated.
Materials and methods
Experimental procedure
Six adult cats (2-3 Kg) were divided into two groups: contra group (three cats) and experimental group (three cats). Animals were anaesthetised with ketamine (50 mg/kg body weight) (Conrath et al., 1983); then. periferic stimulation with EA if low frequency was applied in Hegu and kumlun points, for 20 min. The correct stimulation was confirmed by the rhythmic contractions observed.
Tissue processing
Animals of both groups were perfuse first with buffer (&127;99 ml), and then, with 4% paraformaldehyde diluted in Sorensern buffer (Paese, 1962). The encephalon was then postfixed in the same fixative for 12 h and afterwards rinsed in several baths of sacarose in Sorensen butler. After washing the encephalon was frozen in liquid nitrogen and 80 um frontal sections were obtained in a cryostat.
Immunocytochemical staining
For the immunocvtochemical detection of SP indirect techniques were used (Nakane-and Pierce, 1996, Falini and Taylor, 1983, Conrath et al. 1986). Tissue sections were immersed in 0,3 %. H202 in methanol to eliminate endogenous peroxidase, then after hydration, sections were incubated with 1% normal sheep serum in 0, 3 % triton X-100. Sections were then incubated overnight with rabbit anti-SP antibody (1:1000, Cambridge Research Biochemicals, Cambridge, UK) As secondary layer sheep anti-rabbit IgG horseradish peroxidase-conjugated antibodies were used at a dilution 1:200. Peroxidase was visualized with 3.3' diamenobenzidine. The following controls were used: a) preabsortion of the first antibody with SP; b) omission of the different antibodies.
The mapping was carried out according to the stereotaxic atlas of Jasper and Ajmone-Marsan ( 1996).

Substance P (SP) is a neuropeptide probably related to nociceptive transmission (Lembeck, 1983; Luque, 1988) and thus, with the met-enkephalin system (Hughes 1975); Holdfelt et al.; 1975; Jessel and Iversen, 1977). SP is localized in the small diameter fibres of the posterior horn of the spinal cord, which are considered to be involved in nociceptive transmission. Moreover, alteration of SP-immunoreactivity in the spinal cord after EA has been demonstrated (Vacca Galloway et. al., 1985).
The cerebral basal nucleus shows SP-inununoreactive fibres in the striatonigral pathway (Glowinsky et. al.; 1982), the pallidus-caudate system (Floret and Martinez-Lage, 1983) and the amygdaloid complex (Bouras et al., 1986). In addition, it has been described that the injuries in the caudate nucleus abolish EA analgesia (Gonzalo, 1979), Takeshige et al. 1979).
Thus, in order to obtain new data on nociceptive transmission, the influence of EA or SP-immunoreactivitv on the cerebral hipotalamusi have been investigated.
Materials and methods
Experimental procedure
Six adult cats (2-3 Kg) were divided into two groups: contra group (three cats) and experimental group (three cats). Animals were anaesthetised with ketamine (50 mg/kg body weight) (Conrath et al., 1983); then. periferic stimulation with EA if low frequency was applied in Hegu and kumlun points, for 20 min. The correct stimulation was confirmed by the rhythmic contractions observed.
Tissue processing
Animals of both groups were perfuse first with buffer (&127;99 ml), and then, with 4% paraformaldehyde diluted in Sorensern buffer (Paese, 1962). The encephalon was then postfixed in the same fixative for 12 h and afterwards rinsed in several baths of sacarose in Sorensen butler. After washing the encephalon was frozen in liquid nitrogen and 80 um frontal sections were obtained in a cryostat.
Immunocytochemical staining
For the immunocvtochemical detection of SP indirect techniques were used (Nakane-and Pierce, 1996, Falini and Taylor, 1983, Conrath et al. 1986). Tissue sections were immersed in 0,3 %. H202 in methanol to eliminate endogenous peroxidase, then after hydration, sections were incubated with 1% normal sheep serum in 0, 3 % triton X-100. Sections were then incubated overnight with rabbit anti-SP antibody (1:1000, Cambridge Research Biochemicals, Cambridge, UK) As secondary layer sheep anti-rabbit IgG horseradish peroxidase-conjugated antibodies were used at a dilution 1:200. Peroxidase was visualized with 3.3' diamenobenzidine. The following controls were used: a) preabsortion of the first antibody with SP; b) omission of the different antibodies.
The mapping was carried out according to the stereotaxic atlas of Jasper and Ajmone-Marsan ( 1996).

In spite of its long history, the efficacy of acupuncture for several indications has not. been demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt. The "gold standard" methodology to test for efficacy of any therapy is the randomized clinical trial (ROT). Acupuncture is no exception. It is, of course, difficult to perform placebo (sham)-controlled or double-blind trials, but randomization, a method to minimise selection bias, is no true obstacle for acupuncture research.
Unfortunately, one RCT is rarely sufficient for drawing firm conclusions. Independent replications are essential. Where several trials for one condition exist, they rarely have precisely the same result. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the totality of all trials on one given topic. The best way
of achieving this is to perform a systematic review. This type of evaluative approach can be viewed as the backbone of evidence-based medicine. It should also be applied to acupuncture.

In addition to many musculoskeletal and common conditions that have been helped by acupuncture, acupuncture has an increasing role in palliative medicine for both pain and non painful symptoms.
Scientific scrutiny over the last 40 years has provided solid evidence for its action through nerve stimulation and release of multiple endogenous opioids such as b -endorphin, metenkephalin, dynorphin and other neurohumoral transmitters such as serotonin, oxytocin and endogenous steroid release. It also has widespread effects on the autonomic nervous system. It releases C-GRP, nerve growth factor and CCK an endogenous opioid antagonist.
Pain problems
Pain in cancer patients can be caused by the disease itself, its treatment, eg surgery and radiotherapy or can be completely unrelated eg osteoarthritis or migraine.
Cancer pain can be broadly classified into bone pain, nerve pain, visceral pain, soft tissue infiltration, myofacial pain or muscle spasm. There are a number of well recognised cancer pain syndromes. Post surgical pain syndromes include post mastectomy pain, post thoracotomy pain, post radical neck dissection and phantom limb and stump pain. Post radiation syndromes include radiation fibrosis to the brachial plexus, the lumbosacral plexus and radiation myopathy. Post chemotherapy syndromes include peripheral neuropathy, steroid pseudorheumatism, headache and mononeuropathy.
In addition patients are often immunosuppressed and may be susceptible to acute zoster and may develop post herpetic neuralgia.
Patients presenting to a pain clinic in a cancer hospital where most medics are familiar with treatment options are often extremely sensitive to regular medication or they are not helped by large doses of conventional analgesics and may have a combination of pain and emotional problems. These are especially in evidence during stages of denial and anger about the disease.
Naturally, before treatment of any disease is attempted a diagnosis should be made by history, clinical examination and special investigations as necessary.
Pain conditions
For pain conditions, a segmental approach to treatment makes the most sense and with the addition of strong analgesic points such as L14. Trigger point treatment can also be very helpful. It is best practice to give a rather gentle treatment on first consultation and the treatment can be tailored and intensified or reduced on a trial and error basis, depending on the individual's response.
Acupuncture can relieve treatment related symptoms as well as those due to active disease. It can permit a reduction in intake of analgesics and also side effects. It can help pain and muscle and visceral spasm. It helps neuropathic and nociceptive pain. Mobility can improve with or without analgesia. Acupuncture can help patients with disabling advanced cancer related breathlessness. Nausea and vomiting can be reduced by acupuncture relief prolonged by TENS. Acute stroke victims have a significant reduction in rehabilitation requirements and costs as a result of treatment in comparison with control patients. Vascular problems and miscellaneous symptoms such as disabling hot flushes due to tamoxifen, radiation rectitis, depression, itch and hiccup can also be helped. Acupuncture is by no means a panacea for treatment of all ills and indeed tolerance to acupuncture can develop with disease progression and is sometimes a marker for advancing disease. Nevertheless it can provide a non-drug method for numerous symptoms with a low side effect profile and considerable efficacy. Further research in this field is welcomed.
Contraindications
In is inadvisable to give treatment around an area of an unstable spine in case removal of protective muscle spasm could give rise to movement which could result in cord transection. One should avoid giving needles into an area of lymphoedema in case of an increased infection risk or persistent leakage from the site of needle insertion. Clotting abnormalities with high INR or platelets less than 20,000 could lead to bruising. (Definitely do not treat patients who spontaneously bruise!) Electroacupuncture is contraindicated for patients with a pacemaker. Do not put needles into an area of broken skin or an area with malignant infiltration.

Recent anatomic research has shown that therapeutic effects of acupuncture may well be explained scientifically:
Acupuncture points (APs) are characterized by a nerve-vessel bundle wrapped in a sheath of loose connective tissue (mesenchyme). 82% of all classical AP are circumscript perforations of the superficial body fascia piereced by a nerve-vessel bundle. In body areas not covered by this fascia (i.e. face, skull, fingers and toes) the principle of the mesenchym-covered nerve-vessel bundle can also be demonstrated for APs.
The spinal nerve of a nerve-vessel bundle contains among others substance P reactive axons which are able to antagonize the sympathetic nerve plexus in the adventitia of the wall of the arterie(s) and vein(s) of an AP bundle. Each change within in an AP can generate local axon reflexes which could spread along a meridian. Morphologically meridians are fascia - myo - tendinous kinetic chains. All events affecting such a chain are registered by corresponding APs causing a regulatory answer.
In case of pathophysiological events the APs involved react painfully ("triggerpoints"). Injections of homeopathic - antihomotoxic remedies into these points can have a remarkable effect restoring segmental-regulatory reflexes ("homeosiniatry").

While studying the relationship which exists between the nerves in the bones and the spinal cord, the brain, systems and organs. the researchers of the LU Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine have detected quite a new and completely unknown physiological structure - the bone sensory system (BSS). Researchers have ranked in the line with the other, already exhisting sensory systems, demonstrating the close relationship and interaction of BSS with other systems and organs, thus turning it into a theoretical foundation for a new method of reflexotherapy - osteoreflexotherapy (ORT) (G.Jankovskis, G.Praulite, P.Ozolins, A.Mertens, I.Beldava. M.Vitola, B.Livina, A.Lazda, V.Logins, K.Strelis, T.Kancans, L.Taivans, V.Orlovs, I.Blumberga: 1971-1987).
BSS - relationship of nerves in the bones to CNS, systems and organs - corresponds to the classical principle of sensory system or the principle of physiological structure of sense organs (Vision, hearing, taste, smell, etc.):
The fact that osteoreceptive areas of the cerebral cortex of large hemispheres (CLH) are close by and are partially overlapped by the skin, muscles, internal organs, etc., sensory system areas - gives evidence to the close functional connectedness of the osseous system and its interaction with them and their functions (G..Jankovskis, G.Praulite, 1961-1967). It means that when the skeleton is under an overload (by standing, walking, running, or doing some other activity), the brain is receiving the flow of impulses from more than 200 skeletal bones. On the other hand, the brain transmits them back to the respiratory and circulatory systems, internal organs, internal secretory glands, skin, muscles, bones, eyes, etc. organs, influencing the regulatory action of these systems, as well as, causing neurochemical changes (serotonine, gamma aminobutyric acid, etc.) (G.Praulite, V.Klusa. I.Liepa. R.Muceniece, 1989).
Thus, BSS studies are the basis for ORT. The essence of the method is seen in its name - osteoreflexotherapy (from Greek - osteon - bone; Latin - reflexus- reflection, Greek therapeia- treatment): by irritating osteoreceptors - the nerve impulses are transmitted through CNS to different body systems and organs, where they cause the response or reflexes. This is why ORT is called me method of physiological treatment, i.e. the treatment by means of bone reflexes and not by medicines.
When ORT is performed, locus dolens is irritated by puncturing the skin, subcutaneous tissues. periosteum, endosteum and the compact layer. However, the chief irritation is done by introducing 0.5-2.0 ml of (0.9% NaCl solution just into the bone marrow for 5-15 sec. or by applying the impulse of electric current, a laser beam, or by vibration.
ORT has been used in daily practice by doctors in Latvia for more than 40 years. Many people who have had changes in the skeletal bones and muscles (due to the skeletal overload, body aging, lone confinement to bed, or some other reasons, were suffering from day and nocturnal pains, pains while moving, restricted movements in joints, depressions, senestopathies, etc. impairments. Now they were given a chance to return back to their former jobs or to their favourite sports.
ORT helps restore the range of movements in the painful joint - to prevent the pain in the elbow, shoulder, knee, hip, foot etc. joints as well as the spine. It lessens or reduces the addiction to alcohol, tobacco, drugs; toxic substances; It lessens or prevents headaches and dizziness, neuralgic pains of trigeminal nerve; helps in healing poor regeneration of fractured bones; improves pathological depressions; in children it helps diminish and control near - sight - edness, bronchial asthma, stuttering, incontinence, etc. diseases and syndromes (G..Jankovskis. Various factors take place in achieving the ORT therapeutic effect. Their combination in various diseases may differ. Bone irritation is caused by:
1) cell regeneration of body systems.
2) bone mass increase by stimulating the osteoblast and hindering the osteoclast function:
3) changes of intraosseous pressure;
4) changes of rational blood circulation in major blood vessels and at the microcirculatory level - changes of venous backflow and arterial afflux in the bone;
5) changes in bone sensitivity;
6) neurochemical changes in the brain and evidently in the bone marrow, too.
All the above-mentioned changes, together with other changes as well may cause a longstanding after - effect.
Paraphrasing the words said by an outstanding doctor, scientist and medical historian Pauls Stradins on medicine, the founder of ORT, professor Gerge Jankovskis, has compared ORT to a vocation. science and art, announcing it to become a physiological method for diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases in 21st century.

When ORT is performed, locus dolens is irritated by puncturing the skin, subcutaneous tissues. periosteum, endosteum and the compact layer. However, the chief irritation is done by introducing 0.5-2.0 ml of (0.9% NaCl solution just into the bone marrow for 5-15 sec. or by applying the impulse of electric current, a laser beam, or by vibration.
ORT has been used in daily practice by doctors in Latvia for more than 40 years. Many people who have had changes in the skeletal bones and muscles (due to the skeletal overload, body aging, lone confinement to bed, or some other reasons, were suffering from day and nocturnal pains, pains while moving, restricted movements in joints, depressions, senestopathies, etc. impairments. Various factors take place in achieving the ORT therapeutic effect. Their combination in various diseases may differ. Bone irritation is caused by:
1) cell regeneration of body systems.
2) bone mass increase by stimulating the osteoblast and hindering the osteoclast function:
3) changes of intraosseous pressure;
4) changes of rational blood circulation in major blood vessels and at the microcirculatory level - changes of venous backflow and arterial afflux in the bone;
5) changes in bone sensitivity;
6) neurochemical changes in the brain and evidently in the bone marrow, too.
All the above-mentioned changes, together with other changes as well may cause a longstanding after - effect.

But the life passes. There remain remembrances after the man dominated by the above mentioned values. Professor Zbigniew Gartluszewski - our father, guardian and master - belongs to those who passed away but their remembrance will remain in our hearts.
He was born in an intellectual family. He started his medical studies before the war at the Jagiellonian University. Before the war he was a known sportsman successful in athletics. During the war he joined the Home Army. He was honoured with many medals for his activities during the war. After the war he founded a hospital in Sycow outside Wroclaw. Then he worked at Clinical Hospital of Phthysiopulmonology in Wroclaw. In 1947 he gained the degree of a Doctor in medicine for his dissertation on the hospital run by brothers of the Order of St. John of God in Wroclaw. His great interest in history started to appear crowned by the foundation of the first Museum of Medicine in Poland.
In March 1998 I took part in the great ceremony of the resumption of Professor Zbigniew Garnuszewski's Doctor's thesis otter 50 years which took place in Aula Leopoldina in Wroclaw. It was an unforgettable moment. Unfortunately, suffering could be seen on professor's face.
The next goal of Professor's scientific travels are the countries of Far East - China, Korea, Japan connected with his deep interest in acupuncture.
Professor became popular all over the world as a specialist in acupuncture. He was elected to the Board of the World Federation of Acupuncture Societies where he performed the function of acupuncture of Vice President from 1993. He was also a member of the Board of ICMART European Society of Acupuncture.
In 1978 he organised the first dispensary of acupuncture in Poland converted later into Metropolitan Centre of Acupuncture. The Professor was the President of Polish Society of Acupuncture and the "spirit" of this society.

Continuing the work of our Master we defended the Metropolitan Speciality Acupuncture created by him and rescued our medicine. THE TRADITIONAL CHINESE DIAGNOSIS IN VIEWPOINT OF GENERAL PATHOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN HUMANS

The integration of TCM into classical Western medicine is accompanied by a number of problems. Main among them, as it is accepted to consider, antiquities and primitiveness of applied scientific models created on a principle of analogy. However, given contradiction is not basic if we take into consideration a point of view of the authors.
Ancient Eastern and modern Western medical paradigms are not "intersected" on nosological level of the analysis of illness because of basic difference of initial fields of primary features of illnesses. It depends on different technical abilities of obtaining the facts (knowledge of a patient) and basic methodology of knowledge (from general to particular in the East and on the contrary in the West).
Required "crosspoint" is presented on another overnosological level, i.e. level typical or unspecified pathological processes investigated by a modern general pathology. Using such approach, the authors demonstrate conformity between a traditional Chinese and modern medical nomenclature. In particular:
"Cold" - disturbance of blood and lymph rnicrocirculation leading to dystrophy or necrosis;
"Fire" - inflammation, fever and hyperactivity;
"Wind" - disturbance of mechanism of autonomic and somatic nervous regulation (less in gumoral)
"Fullness/emptiness" - reflection of the whole gamma of changes of a general reactivity of an organism (hyper- and hyporeactivity, adequacy to the aetiological factors, change of a level of reactivity);
"Dumpiness" and "Dryness" - alternatively trended processes arising at disorder central neurogumoral regulation of hydroelectrolyte balance;
"Mucus" - local disorder of Body Fluids circulation due to local disorder of microcirculation and metabolism.
Thus, the translation of traditional Chinese diagnosis not into adopted nowadays nosological units hut into typical pathological processes - inflammation, disturbance nervous nutrition of tissues, dystrophy, disorder of microcirculation and metabolism etc. is an actual possibility of wide integration of methods and approaches of TCM in modern medicine and medical education.

HUMAN HEALTH CONDITION AS RELATED TO THE DISTURBANCE OF CONNECTION OF THE SOUL AND SPIRIT WITH THE BODY

In accordance with the principle of the holistic medicine The World Health Organisation, XII International conference "Church and the World Health", (Vatican, 1997) and others appeal to treat a patient as a person consisting of spirit, soul and body. Indeed, the deep analysis of the causes of diseases leads to the conclusion that the illnesses of body primarily are caused by the indisposition of soul and spirit. The academic medicine usually takes into consideration this fact as so called "psychosomatic diseases''.
The above stated conclusion can be proved by the fact, that people with memory disturbances caused by Alzheimer's disease, deep cerebral thrombosis etc experience the considerable improvement of their health. The author of the lines has observed this phenomenon in the case of his mother (89 years old) who was suffering from the whole bouquet of illnesses:
hypertension, strong pain attacks after the infarction, cholesteatoma, stomach ulcer, colitis, diabetes and so on. After the long heart attack in the result of which the blood pressure went down from 230/130 to 50/30 and the normalisation of the pressure afterwards she lost the memory. She stopped recognising the closest relatives, her orientation worsened, but at the same time she was talking to the late or not-present people. Later on she lost all the symptoms of the diseases: the pressure normalised, heart attacks never repeated, the sugar in blood was in norm. At the same time the memory and the orientation used to improve when a priest was visiting her. Taking into the consideration the fact the memory is situated in the spirit but not in the brains, which has been recognised by prof N.Bechtereva, and the fact that the causes of the body diseases are not placed in the body itself, then the above mentioned example proves that there was the obvious disconnection of spirit and soul with the body.
Similarly, one can suppose that other mental disorders such as debility, cretinism, Down's syndrome etc are caused by the disconnection of spirit and soul with the body as the patients with such mental disorders usually do not suffer from the diseases of the body.
In its turn the methods of curing the schizophrenia (shock therapy, suppressing of the mental aggressive state by the psychotropic means lobotomy etc) in their basis have the principle of disconnection of body and soul. In this way, the connection of the body with the "black astral" or "devils" lodged in the soul is broken. But this is separate voluminus theme.
One should note that at the conference in Saint Petersburg (June, 1998) there was presented information about the successful treatment of children with the Down's syndrome with the help of intensive massage of both media meridians especially in the part of cranium. The speaker explained that in that way they restore the channel of soul and spirit connection to the body. It is noteworthy that at the same time the nipple lines on the metacarpus have been restored.

MODERN CONCEPTS OF PERIARTHRYTIS HUMERO-SCAPULARIS: CLINICAL AND ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL RESEARCHES

Notwithstanding the fact that the first publications concerning periarthrytis humero-scapularis (PHS) were to be found more than 100 years ago, until now the meaning of the functional condition of the shoulder bone in the pathogenesis of this polyetiological disease has not yet been explored sufficiently.
Employing the methods of the bone chronaxymetry, bone pain sensitivity, bone receptive field adaptation and other methods associated with bone sensitivity determination, as well as the functional condition of the shoulder bone (proc. acromalis scapulae, tub. major humeri, proc.coracoideus scapulae, spine scapulae, ciavicula) and bone structure was evaluated before electroosteostunulatin (EOS), during 5 minutes of an irritation by electric current, as well as before and after every EOS treatment for 102 PHS patients from 18 to 78 years old. For 50 % of the patients the disease was determined as acute, and tot 50 % of patients it was determined as chronical, 51 % of the patients had right side PHS, 43 % of the patients had left side PHS, but 6 % of them had bilateral PHS; for 51 % of the patients the disease lasted for 3 months, for l8 % of them is lasted from 3 to 7 months, for l5 % it lasted from 7 months up to 1 year,. but for 17 % of the patients is lasted for more than 1 year (B. Livina, 1993).
Statistically credible correlation was discovered between relatively long chronaxy and high bone sensorial indications for proc.acromialis scapulae and tub. maior humeri, on the one hand, and rentgenologically expressed structural changes in the shoulder joint (up to 30° - 40°) accompanied by movement restrictions, on the other hand. It could be explained with the special role of the shoulder bones ensuring the movement action (B. Livina, 1993).
EOS optimum influence on the parameters of the functional state of shoulder bone was determined, and respective reducement of PHS clinical symptoms until total disappearance was observed: in 90.7 % of the cases the total movement possibility in the shoulder joint was reestablished, in 100 % of the cases the disappearance of the pains during night was observed, in 90.6 % of the cases the disappearance of the pains during movements was established. Under the influence of the irritation the strength of the affected arm was substantially increased according to the dynamometric parameters both after the first EOS and at the end of the EOS treatment course. Similarly, in 100 % of the cases the stabilization of the postural equilibrium, as well as the normalization of the cerebral homeostasis according to the electroencephalographic parameters was observed, Total restoration of the movement extent in the shoulder joint, the growth of the arm muscle strength, the stabilization of the postural equilibrium for PHS patients after EOS could be explained by the increase of the muscle volumes, which contributes to the formation of the osteoblasts and hinders the formation of the osteoclasts and to the close functional relationship and interaction of bone and muscle systems. We motivate the decrease and disappearance of the pains, associated with movements, as well as the pains during night, the normalization of the cerebral homeostasis under the -influence of EOS, with the experimentally discovered neurochemical alterations, evoked as a result of bone irritation (for instance, by neuromediators, such as serotonin, gamma aminobutyric acid, and others) in the cerebrum and, presumably, in the bone marrow.
Hence a possibility has arisen for us to enlarge and deepen the existing concept about the origination, development and clinical expression of PHS. An important role in this respect could be assigned to the functional condition of the bone: the functional potential of the shoulder joint has been determined not only by the condition of the periarticular tissues, but also by the functional condition of the shoulder bones.
The bone irritation, having effect on several PHS pathogenic factors, has to be regarded as a pathogenetic PUS monotherapy.

In 1984 - 1996 we treated 192 patients with burn trauma in the surgical department - 131 out patients and 61 hospitalised (26 adults and 35 children).
Besides of basic surgical therapy, we also used acupuncture (ACU) with steel needle to point 7 of Jung pathway (Lie Cchue) bilaterally. A course of the burns was various, from degree II (deep dermal burn) to degree III (full thickness burn) with total percentage area burn from 5 to 20 % of body surface. Duration of application of needles was once a day for 30 minutes, in the acute stage twice a day for 30 -120 minutes and in advance epithelization once every other day for 30 minutes.
CONCLUSION: Contribution of ACU as a subsidiary method of treatment was positive. ACU markedly participates in reducing the development of burn shock, in shortening the duration of infection, in accelerating epithelization of the skin and exported an analgetic and sedative effect. 61 patients were cured in 4 weeks without a plastic operation, without keloid scars ant contractures. Working absence was shortened, less of analgetics, sedatives and antibiotics were used. The use of ACU in burn trauma is simple, quick by acting and easily available.

THE SYNDROME OF DEPOSITS OF IMMUNOCOMPLEXES IN THE LOCOMOTORIC SYSTEM AND THE ELECTROACUPUNCTURE BY VOLL (EAV)

In last two years, particularly among patients after virus diseases, there is a rising number of patients with acute or chronic syndrome of pain in the spinal column and muscles. According to the French authors "Syndrome polyantalgique idiopatique diffuse".
In all of these forms of disorder we can find a casual link to the occurrence of reduced function of the immunity system and also to the reduced detoxication ability of the organism which is mediated by the liver, spleen and kidneys.
A long-term storage of immunocomplexes (IMC) in tissues has been observed in connection with these disorders, especially in so-called immunologically privileged places with a difficult access for immunocompetent cells, such as vascular walls, binding tissues, musculature of subcutis and synovia of joints.
Electrodiagnostical measurements taken using the Voll method proved, without any doubt, pathological changes in the liver, spleen and kidneys. Moreover, in the case of chronic disorder, pathological changes were detected also in joints and tissues. To a statistically significant degree, the results of EAV measurements corresponded with the results of blood crystallisation analyses, as well as immunological and virological examinations. In particular, the presence of herpetic vici, EB vici, has been proved.

The purpose of this poster support our objective argument that acupuncture can positively influence the immune system. The application of acupuncture in practice testifies of its stimulative effect on the immune system. The authors are hereby attempting to prove the objective capacity of this effect, even in laboratory conditions. Patients with documented immunity disorder were subjected to the following laboratory procedures, in part icular:
1) acupuncture (ACU) as monotherapy
2) acupuncture plus antioxidiancies
3) acupuncture plus Specific Individual Autobiotherapy (SIAB, using autovaccines containing cytokinetic fragments)
During our laboratory tests, we focused primarily on so-called "cellular immunity", concretely on cellular alterations observed in individual subpopulations or T lymphocytes, since they constituted a particularly significant type of cells suitable for our research due to their complex immunity characteristics. EXPERIENCE AND RESULTS OF COMBINATED ACUPUNCTURE THERAPY OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA

The clinical picture of trigeminal neuralgia is one of the most dreaded pain sensations and at the same time a challenge to therapists.
Decisive for optimal care of patients is the exacting compilation of the history, anamnesia findings, pain analysis and differential diagnostics. The interdisciplinary consillary examination should be exploited to the fullest extent.
Presented in the lecture report are the results of longterm monitoring and control as well as the biological-oriented therapy.
Before treatment was commenced the patients from two groups underwent biological, radiological, orthopedic, otorhinolaryngologic, ophthalmic and dental examinations.
Particular importance was attached to the disturbance field disorders and focus factors. Psycho-social and other possible causes such as immune deficiency and environmental stress were also considered. Considered, more especially were disorders in the crania-gnatho-sacral relation as significant and not very seldom causes.
Only chronic cases of trigeminal neuralgia in the patient collective were included. In the case of all patients there was almost a continuous stereotype increase in the dose of medication, generally Carbamazepine, forced by fear of the pain experience or because of the deficient effect of the dose, a few were also given psycho-pharmaceutics. Uncontrolled self medication has already led in some cases to undesirable stressing of liver and kidney function with simultaneous paradox effect of reduced analgetic effectiveness. Because of the increasing problems an alternative possibility of treatment had to be employed, which was free of side effects as much as possible in order to counteract more, especially the psychical crisis pressure.
The observance of all individual modalities is particularly important. As one therapy acting on the body's own pain retarding system is acupuncture in its body, ear and cerebral acupuncture variations. To the greatest extent the aim behind this change in therapy, was to ensure a significant dampening of the sensitivity to pain, of nociception and the frequency of the attacks, to save the patients from the psy' the through pain paroxysm - and as a result, to also reduce the psychotrope medication.
Treated were also patients who despite preceding irreversible therapies (ambient alcohol injections. periphery neurexeresis or suffered the same pain after neural therapy as well as multimorbide patients.
I would like to mention the following as a result of my own observations: the needled body or ear points evidenced significant differences in temperature measured with a microsensor measuring probe with very fast reaction time and measuring tolerance of 0.2°C measurable over a range of 0 to 40°C.
The long-term monitoring served to assess the success of the treatment and the lasting effect. It was possible not only to take away the fear of pain but also ensure longer intervals free of pain attacks and significant lowering of the sensitivity to pain. Altogether the chance in therapy appeared to be dependent on the individual modalities and the psychological situation. This was obviously very favourable to the patient to get away from feeling dependent on threatened medication. To be seen as an unrestricted advantage in the course of the treatment without side effects, a clear reduction in pain killers and protection of the psyche, the effects of real causal therapy. Epicrisis: The therapy brought month long to two year recidive and painless intervals without having to take the forced earlier medication in considerable number of the treated patients. The results of the treatment of 2 patient groups with 17 and 28 cases were documented with statistics. They characterize the honest efforts to relieve pain according to Galen:

The Yin-Yang correspondence of the Shu and Mu antique points and their appearance to the front and back of the body originates already in the roots of ancient Chinese philosophy.
The early Taoist text "Huai Nan Ju" mythologizes the world of chaos before it was brought into harmony of YinYang. The human beings who survived this disaster to eventually live in harmony with the Cosmos "bore earth's square on their backs and embraced the round sky"..
The same idea is found also in "I-Ching" where the "Ten thousand beings carry Yin on their backs and embrace Yang in their front, blending these two vital breaths (Qt) to attain harmony"... After hundreds of years of rendition, these lines appeared as: "Ten thousand beings turn their backs toward Yin and their face toward Yang"...
These statements place the human and the Universe realms in the orderly relation to one another according to the principle that Yin attracts Yang and Yang attracts Yin.
The earth is Yin and the heaven is Yang, the front of the body is Yin, while the back of it belongs to Yang. The mythological statement in the "Huai Nan Ju" and "I-Ching" that the Yang back bears the Yin earth, while the Yin front embraces the Yang heaven remains fundamental to the longevity practices embodied in acupuncture and other Chinese techniques...
According to "I-Ching" fire and Water represents the Heaven and Earth in life. Heaven and Earth are the Yang-Yin archetypes from which life is patterned. In order to have life there must be harmony of Yin within Yang and vice versa...
This idea is the basis of the quote "we carry Yin on our backs, and embrace Yang".
Yin refers to the physical body, whereas Yang refers to the life force animating it from within. We carry our Yin physical embodiment around with us like a suit of clothes from the past, while we hold tight to the Yang life force and orient our direction toward it as we face the future and the continued maintenance of our lives...

Summary.
The Antique Points consist of ten generic points on each of the Twelve Ordinary Meridians that regulate the flow of meridian Qi in a way that is common to all of the Main Meridians.
For example, the function of each Antique Point is different from the other nine Antique Points, whereas the function of a specific Antique Points will be similar on each of the Twelve Regular Meridians.
Since the first introduction to the Acupuncture literature in the "Ling-Shu" and "I-Ching" these points have been recognized for their importance in regulating the general flow of Qi in the channels and organs.
The Shu "Associated" points on the back and the Mu "Collecting" (or "Alarm") points on the front of the body provide direct access to the internal organs, whereas the other eight points affect meridian Qi directly, and indirectly affect the corresponding Zang-Fu...
These eight Antique Points are located between the fingertips and the elbows, and between the toe tips and the knees on each of the Twelve Main Meridians. They belong to the "Luo"-connecting and "Xl"-activating Points, the "Yuan"-source and the Five Transportation Points of "Wu Shu Xue", which in the Nan-Ching referred to what is called the "Jing'.-well, "Ying (xing) -brook, "Shu"-stleam, "Ting"-river, and "He"- sea Points.
Two of these points overlap on the Yin channels, so there are all together 115 Antique Points.

For example, the function of each Antique Point is different from the other nine Antique Points, whereas the function of a specific Antique Points will be similar on each of the Twelve Regular Meridians.
Since the first introduction to the Acupuncture literature in the "Ling-Shu" and "I-Ching" these points have been recognized for their importance in regulating the general flow of Qi in the channels and organs.
The Shu "Associated" points on the back and the Mu "Collecting" (or "Alarm") points on the front of the body provide direct access to the internal organs, whereas the other eight points affect meridian Qi directly, and indirectly affect the corresponding Zang-Fu...
These eight Antique Points are located between the fingertips and the elbows, and between the toe tips and the knees on each of the Twelve Main Meridians. They belong to the "Luo"-connecting and "Xl"-activating Points, the "Yuan"-source and the Five Transportation Points of "Wu Shu Xue", which in the Nan-Ching referred to what is called the "Jing'.-well, "Ying (xing) -brook, "Shu"-stleam, "Ting"-river, and "He"- sea Points.
Two of these points overlap on the Yin channels, so there are all together 115 Antique Points.

In the monumental "Science and Civilization in China" Prof. Joseph Needham of Cambridge University discusses several books on acupuncture. He further mentions a Frenchman who studied acupuncture in China in 1901. According to Needham, his return to France 30 years later to promote the technique brought acupuncture to Europe...
Not only have many doctors begun to study acupuncture, but over the last 30 years some countries, including the US, Germany, France and others have gradually established acupuncture training courses and colleges. In addition, the WHO has made acupuncture one of its research foci, carrying out research on techniques, translating classics, setting international standards for the classification of Acu-points and holding global academic conferences...
The problem is that Chinese medicine's theoretical underpinnings are relatively abstract. This makes it difficult to understand for students of Western medicine, who are used to the concrete nature of anatomy and physiology. And this is especially true of the meridian system, which is their biggest "headache"...
What is the meridian system'? China's earliest medical text, "The Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine" says at its outset that the meridian system is the most fundamental system of the body. The "Jin-Mai" are the vertical meridians (channels) through the body. There are 12 regular channels in addition to a horizontal network which runs throughout the body connecting the "Jin-Mai". These horizontal collaterals are the communication system between the external and internal engaging the wholistic and close interdependence in the Universe.

If there is a problem with the body, the treatment is administered "via meridianum" to restore the balance in the organism. According to Needham it is a kind of emanation from the capillaries, a great insight of the ancient Chinese, apparently derived from the observation of the arteries, veins and nerves. Modern books on acupuncture, whether written by Chinese or Westerners, lay a chart of the meridian system on top of a modern anatomical illustration for contrasting purposes...
But Needham also pointed out that the ancient Chinese conception of physiolo8y differs from the modern one in that it envisages two parallel systems, the existence of one of which (for the blood) can be demonstrated by anatomists, while the second (for Qi) cannot...
The circulatory system for blood was viewed as a hydraulic system containing rivers, tributaries, channels, resewoirs and lakes. However, the channels and collaterals of the meridian system are invisible. Needham describes them as being like an underside of a city existing in the dermis rather than the epidermis. Collaterals, too, are not limited to those, which connect the regular meridians, but also include "grandson" collaterals which branch off of the regular channels and disappear into the surface structure of the body. Needham says that it is this that creates the impression of abstractness and makes the system difficult to understand...

But there are some scholars who take a different approach, tackling the problem from the perspective of physics, They have found a great deal of evidence to support their view, and in doing so have pulled Chinese and Western Medicine closer together, perhaps even giving them a basis for the integration during the next Millennium...

1. The Yellow Emperor asked:
Humans may be either Yin or Yang. Between heaven and earth, the number five is indispensable. Thus humans may have five times five (or twenty five) shapes or forms depending upon the growth of blood and Qi. How are these differentiated and how can one know their internal organs by inspection of their exterior?
Qi Bo answered:
The five notes of "jue, zhi, gong, shang and vu", corresponding to Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water respectively. Each of the five notes, however, is divided into five subnotes, which are said to share the qualities or properties of that note.
"Joe" (Wood), for example, is subclassified into Shang Jue (or upper Jue), which is said to cover the whole of Jue in quality, and four other subnotes, namely, the right upper corner, the right lower corner, the left upper corner and the left lower corner... ,
One must first establish the five physiques, metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Then these are subdivided in terms of the five colours and then differentiated according to the five notes. Thi$ then makes up twenty-five types of humans...
The "Wood" form person is analogous to the "Upper Jue". He has a green-blue facial colour, a small head and a long face, broad shoulders with a flat upper back, small, nice hands and feet, and is talented. He is studious, lacks strength and is fraught with worries. He is dilligent, and endures spring and summer but does not endure autumn and winter. During this time he is susceptible to invasion and thus - disease. This form is ruled by the foot "Joe Yin". They are dignified and amiable...
The "Fire" form person is analogous to the "Upper Zhi", has a red facial colour, broad paravertebral muscles, a pointed face and small head, well proportioned shoulders, upper back, and thighs, small hands and feet, moves steadily of the earth, is quick wilted, rocks when walking, is full fleshed in the shoulders and upper back, hot tempered, generous but neglectful of promises, thoughtful, observant and penetrating, good looking, impatient, is not long-living but liable to sudden death, and endures spring and summer, but does not endure autumn and winter. During this time he is susceptible to invasion and hence disease. He is ruled by the hand "Shao Yin" and has a knack for things (i.e. "honest")...
The "Earth" form person is analogous to the "Upper Gong", has a yellow facial colour, a big head and round face, beautiful shoulders and upper back, a big belly, well shaped legs, and small hands and feet. He has excessive flesh, and upper and lower limbs are mutually well proportioned, walks calmly upon the earth, is reliable, and has a calm heart. He is kind-hearted and charitable, does not desire power, and endures autumn and winter but does not endure spring and summer. During this time they are susceptible to invasion and the arrival of disease. They are ruled by the foot "Tai Yin" and have moral integrity...
The '"Metal" form person is analogous to the "Upper Shang", has a white facial colour a small head and a round face, small shoulders and upper back, small abdomen, and small hands and feet, muscles of the outer ankles like bones and nimbleness of the bones of the body (i.e. "swiftness of movement"). He is honest and selfless, impatient, quite yet fierce, and a good candidate for government office. He endures autumn and winter but does not endure spring and ' summer. During this period they are susceptible to the invasion and the arrival of disease. They are ruled by the "Hand Tai Yin" and have moral integrity...
The "Water" form person is analogous to the "Upper Yu", has a black facial colour, has a big head and uneven face (i.e. "curved" face), a large chin, narrow shoulders, a big belly, large hands and feet and swings their body while walking. He has a lowered coccyx and long upper back, is disrespectful, deceitful, and treacherous. He is subject to violent death, endures autumn and winter, but does not endure spring and summer. During this time he is susceptible to invasion and the arisal of disease. He is ruled by the "Foot Shao Yin" and is filthy and abject...

"As to the years as they relate to the mutual overwhelming of the form and colour, how can this be known:'"
Qi Bo answered:
A person's great fear recurs every nine years, beginning at seven years, then sixteen, twenty-five, thirty-four, forty-three, fifty-two, sixty-one, etc... These years are fearful for all people. During these times, one must not fail to attempt to calm oneself. Invasion leads to disease and neglect leads to death...

"How does one needle according to Yin and Yang?"
Qi Bo answered:
One must palpate the "Con Kou and Ren Yin" before regulating Yin and Yang. One must also palpate along the channels and connecting vessels in search of congelation, binding, and lack of free flow. These cause pain and obstruction somewhere in the body and, in serious cases, lead to lack of movement and thus congelation. Congelation can be warmed by conducting Qi to it, but will not be resolved until the blood is harmonised. In case of blinding within the connecting vessels, the vessels are bound and the blood cannot circulate, and this circulation can be fascilated by dredging. Thus it is said: if there is a surplus of Qi above, conduct it downward. If them is an insufficiency of Qi, it should be pushed towards the insufficiency. Where Qi has lodged and become retarded, it should be met and ushered. Therefore, one must be clear about the flow channels and tunnels before one is able to oppose the imbalance. In case of contention between cold and heat, conduct and circulate the Qi. In case of stale blood but without binding, immediately take aim at this.
If one is first clearly acquainted with the twenty-five types of humans distinguishing where blood and Qi are situated, left and right, above and below, needling will be simply accomplished...

The presence of heavy metals, such as Hg, in the cell nucleus serves as a microantenna and creates strong chemical reactions in the surrounding tissues, particularly on the gene when it happens in the cell nucleus, and it triggers the induction of pre-cancer or cancer. Most of the Hg inside of the body comes from amalgam used for filling dental decay (about 50% of the composition of dental amalgam is Hg) and other sources of Hg intake include drinks and food which were either kept in a ,Hg containing pot or cup. Extremely high frequency electro-magnetic fields can be detected by an electro-magnetic field detector. In some individuals one of the above methods or a combination of methods can reverse them to normal Qi state and it should be repeated several times every day if (-) Qi state re-occurs.
By synthesizing the basic unit of human telomere (TTAGGG) and (CCCTTA), the author, using the BiDigital O-Ring Test Resonance Phenomina, non-invasively measured telomeres of normal lung and colon tissue, small cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of lung, as well as adenocarcinoma of colon and found that cancer tissues usually have a telomere level up to about 2 times higher than normal tissue, and the higher the malignancy, the higher the telomere atnount. Acupuncture given at St. 36 increased the telomere of normal tissue and reduced the amount of telomere in cancer tissue toward normal value. When telomere reaches a critically low level, the cell can not divide and can result in apoptosis (programmed death). In most of the human body tissue except the brain, heart, testes and ovaries, telomere almost always decreases with advancing age and the minimum amount of telomere found in human is 100ng in an individual over 100 years old, while in the brain, heart, testes and ovaries the telomere amount remained fairly close to that at birth which is usually anywhere between 1500ng - 1800ng, although it slightly decreases with advancement of age. The author succeeded in increasing telomere amount by acupuncture in all normal tissue. In those who have significantly reduced telomere levels in most of the body tissues, it was possible to increase telomere amount anywhere between 60% and 120% and the increase in telomere usually gives some degree of improved general body function.

Often environmental factors, particularly, environmental electro-magnetic field with extremely high frequency can contribute to the genesis of cancer and cardio-vascular diseases. According to the author's study, the majority of patients with cancer and cardio-vascular diseases have a definite relationship with abnormal electro-magnetic fields which can be detected from a specific location through the patient's bed. Also, the location of the cancer often corresponds to the pathway of the strong abnormal electro-magnetic field, particularly in those who have lived in the same house and slept on the same bed for more than 7 years. The presence of heavy metals, such as Hg, in the cell nucleus serves as a microantenna and creates strong chemical reactions in the surrounding tissues, particularly on the gene when it happens in the cell nucleus, and it triggers the induction of pre-cancer or cancer. Most of the Hg inside of the body comes from amalgam used for filling dental decay (about 50% of the composition of dental amalgam is Hg) and other sources of Hg intake include drinks and food which were either kept in a ,Hg containing pot or cup. Extremely high frequency electro-magnetic fields can be detected by an electro-magnetic field detector. Electromagnetic field detectors for relatively low frequencies of less than 100MHz are less expensive but extremely high frequency .electro-magnetic detectors of more than 20GHz become extremely expensive but with the Bi-Digital O-Ring Test any harmful electro-magnetic field can be detected very easily. BUILDING ON A RATIONAL PLAN OF THE CLINICAL INTERCHANGE BETWEEN WESTERN MEDICINE, SASANG CONSTITUTION MEDICINE AND ORIENTAL MEDICINE: WITH THE ISCHEMIC STROKE PATIENT OUTCOMES RESEARCH

Background: This Study was done to compare the effects of the therapy for ischemic stroke among the three hospitals. Each of the three hospitals adopted their own policy of the therapy (Yonsei University Wonju Christian Hospital (YUWCH) adopted western therapy, Sangji University Oriental Hospital (SUOH) adopted Sasang Constitution Medicine therapy and Hana Oriental Hospital (HOH) adopted mixed (oriental and western) therapy).
Methods: Prospectively, from November 1997 to December 1998, 190 inpatients were recruited at the three hospitals. Information was gathered through interviews and examinations. Outcome variables were changes in neurologlc function, measured by modified NIH scale, stroke differential diagnosis modal score and patient's satisfaction score during the two weeks of admission.
Results: Degree of improvement in modified NIH scales was lowest in HOH though the differences ware not statistically significant. Stroke differential diagnosis model score was significantly improved in YUWCH than in other two hospitals. Patient's satisfaction score in HOH was significantly higher than those in other two hospitals.
Conclusions: Degree of improvement in oriental viewpoint by western therapy was higher than oriental or mixed therapy. Degree of improvement in western viewpoint were not significantly different among three kinds of therapy. Patient's satisfaction score by mixed therapy was highest among the three kinds of therapy.

At the basis of the several methods of diagnostics used in medicine (of Dr. Voll and others) there is determination of the physiological condition of the biological condition of the biologically active points.
It is generally known, that ohm resistant of the skin in the biologically active points is significantly smaller that at the places that are not biologically active. However, at the moment of measuring under the influence of the electric current there is an irritation of the BAP, that causes unpredictable changes not only in all the meridian corresponding to the point of this measurement, but also in other meridians. Therefore, in repeated measurements, it is never possible to get the data of the first measurement and the exactness of diagnostics becomes doubtful. In fact, the reaction of the BAP to the irritation of the electric current is being measured.
The current intensity used for the measurement in the modern systems of diagnostics is reduced to the maximum and does not show the desirable results. Therefore a possibility is searched to register the BAP condition without influencing BAP with the electric current (by determining ohm resistance indirectly).
In the LU Institute of Physics a BAP determining method without using the active current is elaborated and tested. The working principle of the method is based on the physiological and physically chemical differences of the BAP from the other places of the skin. The BAP determining takes place without contact. The BAP working capability of the method has been tested in the laboratory of the Institute of Physics and in Riga Hospital Nr.7.
The research made in Riga Hospital Nr.7 with the help of the system "ALAN" has proved, that to the separate pathological changes of organs and systems correspond a typical curve of the obtained data.
Repeated testing by using "ALAN" gives a possibility to judge about the effectiveness of the applied therapy and shows its possible imperfections.

Among those papers 15 were randomised controlled studies. In I1 out of 15 papers acupuncture proved effective in the treatment of Temperomandibular dysfunction and as analgesic. Moreover acupuncture has proved effective in the treatment of Sjoegrens disease in a number of papers not included in this review. Facial pain and phobias are another major problem where acupuncture has something to offer.

Objective
The main criticism in all acupuncture studies is the lack of, or insufficient placebo procedures. Unfortunately, no Gold Standard for placebo procedures exist in acupuncture. Many different attempts have been made but the different techniques have never been assessed against one another or against a standard procedure. Moreover a substantial number of techniques have been invasive.
The aim of this study is to compare the credibility of different placebo procedures with a standard procedure (superficial needling) and subsequent, on the basis of the results of this study, recommend the most credible placebo procedures as standard for future RCT involving acupuncture.
Materials
160 randomly selected patients who previously had tried acupuncture treatment took part in the study. Patients who were unable to to-operate due to age or patients where the selected point could have an influence on their treatment were excluded.
Methods
The patients were informed that a new technique was investigated where needles were inserted superficially on the back of the legs in either an acupuncture point or in a non acupuncture point. Moreover the patients were informed, that the stimulation might be a real stimulation on both sides, a real stimulation on one side and a placebo stimulation on the other side, or placebo stimulation on both sides. As reference for all tests, superficial needling was used in acupuncture point BL-57. The needles were inserted simultaneously on both sides. Hwato disposable stainless steel needles 0.30x30 mm in a guide tube were used. To investigate the variability between the individual techniques, the three most reliable techniques were tested against themselves.
The following test procedures were carried out: Superficial needling in a non acupuncture point, Blunt end of a needle technique, Guide tube technique, Cocktail stick technique and Cocktail stick in a guide tube technique.
After inserting of the needles the patients were asked the following questions:
1) Were you able to spot any difference between the stimulation on your right and on your left leg?
2) Do you believe the stimulation on your left/right side was:
a) A real stimulation,
b) A placebo stimulation

Conclusion
It appeals from this study that a cocktail stick in a guide tube is the most credible placebo procedure and I will propose that standards for acupuncture studies should include three arms.

The method of the electropuncture diagnosing (EPD) is one of the promising non-invasive methods for estimation of the functional status of humans. The aim of this work is to examine the possibility of EPD method for estimation of functional status of the liver.
Patients were examined by the method of Nacatany with apparatus "LEDIS". A group of patients with chronic hepatitis B and C of different activity and a group of patients with liver cirrhosis were examined. The duration of disease was in the range from 1 year to 10 years. This group included 130 patients at the age of 1 to 20 years old. All the patients were examined morphologically (puncture biopsy). 30% of the patients had normal biochemical analysis, at the same time morphological changes were found in all examined patients. The correlation between EPD results and morphological (index of hystological activity) data was 0.65. There was no correlation between biochemical analysis and morphological data.
The results of the investigation show the possibility to apply EPD-method for complex estimation of the functional status of the liver.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE FOR EVERYDAY PROBLEMS

Introduction
I have been across with the TCM Acupuncture study in Singapore and China for several years. With this study, I have gained some valuable knowledge and experiences, which I wish to share with the Eastern and Western Medical Practitioners in order to expand my research in this area. Below are the examples that I had experienced during my stay in Thailand and Singapore.
Example One:
While travelling in Bangkok, Thailand, I visited a Pharmacy and was talking to the Pharmacist and a German tourist with her translation book was trying to explain to the Pharmacist that she has a migraine headache and wanted something to relieve the terrible pain she had in her head. I asked her if she would mind if I touched her head and she said no. I put my thumb and the side of my nail on Du 20 and it was tender. I pressed hard until her eyes watered and then pressed LI 4 (Hegu). It was tender but I pressed hard and asked her how was her headache. She rolled her head and concentrated for a second and said: "It's gone". "How did you do that?" The Pharmacist also was impressed and was Very interested in this little bit of "magic".

Two Europeans staying with us in Singapore confided in that they had been constipated for 5 days. Firstly, I got them to drink a large tumbler of water straight down. Then, as they were males I treated the left side of the body by inserting 2.2 cun needles, one in LI 11 and one in K 3 (for females I would have treated the right, side). I then proceeded to do the reducing method on LI 11 (because of the heat in the LI) by holding the top of the needle and rotating the needle in large circles anti clockwise for 2 minutes and repeated every 5 minutes. Then, I treated K3 by turning the needle in large circles clockwise for 2 minutes and repeated every 5 minutes and both needles were retain for 25 minutes.
The theory here being that when there is fire (LI) pour on water (K). After leaving the needle in for 20 minutes the 1st patient immediately got of the bed straight to the toilet and emptied his bowels. The 2nd patient had the same treatment but it was 15 minutes before he emptied his bowels. The two patients had both tried laxatives before but with no success before asking for acupuncture treatment.
Conclusion
As from the above examples, I believe that a lot of malfunctions can be rectified and treated by means of TCM concept and better result can be achieved in the early stage to avoid the use unnecessary chemical drugs for treatment of diseases.

MECHANICAL PUNCTURE BY MEDICAL TREATMENT OF PERIPHERICAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DISEASES

Using physical factors of the acupuncture points (physioacupuncture) is an effective method of various pathologic syndromes cure. The method of influence on acupuncture points using mechanical energy could be called mechanical acupuncture. Among all methods of mechanical acupuncture, phonoacupuncture takes a special place and consists in influence of ultrasound fluctuation energy on acupuncture points. We used focus ultrasound, when influencing on acupuncture points. In comparison to plate radiators, which create dispersing ultrasound waves, focus radiators can locally concentrate ultrasound energy, punctually deep in the tissue.
For grounding of this cure method, some morphological, electrophysiological and clinical examinations were carried out. The outcome of this morphological examinations let us set the acceptable parameters for the use of focus ultrasound, which does not damage soft tissues and nerve fibers. Comparing these results with those of the focus ultrasound thermal characteristics researches showed us that the temperature increase T (20 C) in the influenced area causes changes of tissue morphology, which can bring to the tissue degeneration. When using focus ultrasound on the acupuncture points (E36, 41), an improvement of the microcirculation and partial pressure of oxygen inlower extremity is registered. The experiment with focus ultrasound shows, that the back reaction of the peripheral nerve conductor depends on the influence intensity and can have roborant or dispersive character.

EHF-PUNCTURE: The EHF-Puncture applies low intensity electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of millimeter (MM) band [frequencies: 30 to 300 GHz or wavelengths: 10 to 1 mm]. In spite of the fact, that EHF-Puncture proclaims the same principles as traditional Acupuncture and Moxibustion, one may point at the most important features of this new version of the needleless influence on acupoints.
EHF-Puncture is non-invasive and painless. During EHFPuncture temperature changes on the skin surface and inside the body correlate with the arrival of Qi phenomenon and help a doctor to optimize the treatment regimen. On the eve of the XXI century the modern medicine is more and more widening its understanding of energo-informatic nature of diseases.
Modern diagnostic methods of Acupuncture make it possible to estimate the condition of human organism as a whole, and also to influence both any system in it, and the whole organism.
The energo-informational system of the human being is one of the most important in the regulation of its homeostasis. The defect at the level of each individual system and then, the whole organism leads to energo-informational diseases.
Today we are able to understand the reason for the low effectiveness of conventional methods of treatment. Acupuncture of XXI century is being born in our days. Together with the progress in the fundamental and clinical research in the field of acupuncture, modern quantum physics, molecular biology and medicine we may recognise much more deeply the traditional laws and notions of acupuncture.
For example, Prof. Mussat (1998) explains on the basis of Graph No1, representing the initial organization of Universe, a unique distribution pattern of eight terms coded in binary triplet configurations, which obeys specific dynamic laws. These laws allow us to distribute the four basic elements following their atomic structure in the following order: hydrogen (H), carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O), which later, turn into the nuckotides: adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine - precisely in that order, uracil taking intermediate position.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF TREATMENT OF THE OSSEOUS FRACTURE WITH ACUPUNCTURE

We have performed a. study of the effect of acupuncture on ossification process, and more specifically on fractures.
We selected 2 groups of rabbits, which we realize an experimental osteotomy of 2 m.m. diameter, at the level of the diaphisis in femur.
One group (24) was treated with acupuncture, accompanied of frequence low electric stimulation in the same points.
The control group (12) did not receive any treatment, and the fracture continued the spontaneous process of osseous consolidation.
In the comparative study we have observed differences in the structural plane (the disposition of osteoblast at the aspect of bone trabeculae), than in biochemical plane (ion concentrations, calcium and phosphorus)

THREE CASES OF DRY KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS IN THE DOG, TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE

We have performed a study of the evolution of three different clinical cases of Dry Keratoconjunctivitis ("Dry eye"), in the dog.
In all the cases the Schirmer-test is low to the 5 mm/minute.
Each case has different etiology. (Traumatic, Fire - wind - Liver, and Yin - deficiency - Kidney) and different acupunctural treatment, following the Traditional Chinese Medicine recipes.
From the obtained results, we can conclude that acupuncture can be a good alternative method, in the treatment of this disease.

THE POSSIBILITY OF INTEGRATION OF TCM IN CLINICAL PRACTICE APPLYING COMPUTER PULSE DIAGNOSTICS

For successful integration of methods and means of TCM in classical medicine not only positive evidences of effectiveness of treatment are necessary, but also adequate means of diagnostics objectively confirming the traditional Chinese diagnosis, which in most cases is subjective from the point of view of modern medical science. High informativeness of pulse diagnostics and difficulty in its manual version application served as the ground for our research. Creating diagnostic system of puLse diagnostics we took into account the requirements to diagnostic methods, which are used both in scientific medical research and in practical medicine: standardization of measuring instruments and diagnostic procedure, reproducibility of obtained data, reliability of obtained diagnostic information.
The computer complex applying special software transforms sphygmogram of pulse in order to improve visualization of significant features. Processed and displayed on the monitor sphygmogram is named pulsogram (PG). According to traditional Chinese judgement, 12 PG in 6 classical points are recorded during examination. Investigation of PG of healthy volunteers of various age has shown, that the shape and amplitude of PG do not depend on sex and age, but depend on the constitution, time of day, season, psychoemotional state of person.
We have developed an original technique of the analysis of PG, which allows to make a diagnosis "according to eight managing principles" in terms of TCM. Pulse features that correspond to "external pathogenic energies", "five emotions", syndromes "cold", "heat", "dampness", "dryness", "wind" and their combinations have been revealed. The above mentioned features allow us to confirm the traditional Chinese diagnosis based on classical clinical methods of research. The analysis of 12 PG which correspond to 6 Zang and 6 Fu organs, enables to evaluate viscera connections and intersystem interactions and to reveal the initial causes of disease.
This method of interpretation PG was successfully applied within state scientific research programs and practice. It confirmed function ability and may be used in scientific research and in genera) practice as well for the purpose of objective evidence of the traditional Chinese diagnosis.

VEGETATIVE DISORDERS IN CHILDREN LIVING IN HARMFUL ENVIRONMENT FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF TCM

Practically in every person living in harmful environment and suffering from Chemobyl disaster, syndrome of vegetative disorders (VD) is revealed. Autonomic dysfunction mostly dominates in a clinic manifestation of disease and usually can not be easily treated by the means of classical medicine.
The purpose of our research was to optimize diagnostics and treatment of children with VD, who suffered from Chernobyl disaster and live in harmful environment, by definition leading pathogenetic mechanisms of VD development from the TCM point of view. Traditional clinical Chinese diagnostics and computer pulse diagnostics (CPD) developed in our laboratory were used as basic methods.
According to the data of the complaints and children examination (37 boys at the age of 14-I5) symptoms of an internal wind and deficiency Ying of Liver, Kidneys, combined with one from the following syndromes:
- rising Yang - Liver up;
- emptiness Yang - Spleen, stagnation of dumpiness and blocking of lifting clear Yang up;
- emptiness of blood - have been detected.
Realization CPD has confirmed conclusions of clinical observations and has allowed to evaluate interaction of organs at existence of VD. Besides the abovementioned pathology, CPD has revealed syndrome of a wind and cold Small, Large Intestine, Gall Bladder and Urinary Bladder, which are not detected according to clinical signs. The changes of pulse were complex, that corresponded to existence of their complex pathology. As for our judgement the detection of pulse symptoms of an external wind - cold on pulse Fu of organs of all patients , testifies constant external penetration of pathogenic factors of a wind and cold, that corresponds to the harmful effect on the organism ksenobiotics, radionuclides.
From the TCM point of view, the deficiency Ying of Kidneys, Liver and its consequence in examined children is' the most important issue.
The syndromes of rise Yang - Liver up and Wind of Liver, syndrome of empty of blood are mostly dominate at VD; little less often - empty Yang - Spleen with accumulation of dumpiness and blocking of rise clear Yang up.
The syndromes of emptiness and cold Small, Large Intestine, Gall Bladder and Urinary Bladder show the inhibition of their functional activity in process of production of common Ying, that causes deficiency Ying.
The analysis of the pulse data allows to draw the conclusion that deficiency Ying of Kidneys, Liver, Blood, which dominate in clinical manifestation at VD in children, are secondary and arise due to disturbance of activity of Fu-organs and Spleen.
Pulse data obtained allow to offer the scheme of pathogenesis of VD. On the base of this pathogenesis we offer tactics of therapy of VD and accompanying pathology in children living in harmful environment. The comparison of diagnostic informativeness of classical version of clinical diagnostics and computer pulse diagnostics demonstrates that the efficiency CPD has sufficient depth and helps to reveal disturbance of a function of organs at subclinical stage.

INFORMATIVENESS OF ELECTROPUNCTURAL DIAGNOSIS BY Y.NACATANI IN LIVER DISEASES DIAGNOSTICS

The progress of pathological processes in liver both in somatic, and in infectious diseases can develop without visible clinical aspects. Diagnostics and differential diagnostics of liver diseases require to use of difficult and invasive methods of research. It is known that the Nacatani test can reveal a pathology which cannot be clinically tested.
The purpose of this research is to improve diagnostics and differential diagnostics of liver diseases with Nacatani test.
188 patients with liver diseases at the age of 3 - 14 years old and 36 healthy children have been examined. Standard clinical and biochemical researches were carried out for all patients. The diagnosis was confirmed by detection of specific immunological markers of acute hepatitis. Virus hepatitis A was detected in 118, virus hepatitis B - in 51 patients and Gilbert syndrome - in 5 cases, pathology of bile ducts - in 14 cases.
We have revealed that at the initial stage of illness the patients with various clinical versions virus hepatitis have the typical diagrams of electroconductivity due to significant change of electroconduction of representative zones, however, the most informative for diagnostics virus hepatitis are values of symmetrical zones F2, F3, F5, F6.
Such changes of electroconduction are not detected in children with other liver diseases and healthy children. This allows us to offer to use the Nacatani test for diagnostics and differential diagnostics of virus hepatitis.
